My man, who was with me, said he heard a "tape" (we only had local cassette tapes back then, that you actually had to copy or make yourself) with G Rap on it. Not sure if he was telling the truth, but when I heard G Rap, he was like no other. I don't doubt Nas was influenced by G Rap, but there was no big talk about Nas sounding like anyone other than himself when he emerged. He was basically a wonder child. New York Hip-Hop was in a bit of an odd space when he appeared with Main Source in '91. G Rap was a giant at that time, but hard to market; and dudes like Rakim and Big Daddy Kane were cooling off, with the likes of Tribe, Chubb Rock, and a fading LL and PE basically holding New York down. Wu-Tang completely put the game on smash in '93, and Nas, whose mystique was steady bubbling, finally dropped Illmatic in '94. If there was no G Rap, I believe you still would have had Nas. When I first heard Nas, I thought that his voice sounded like a jazz instrument, perhaps because of his father's influence. Nas was/is super smooth. G Rap is a lyrical giant, but he can beat-up records from time-to-time with a hard cadence.

Kool g rap single handily started the Gambeno type flow. He also helped innovate double rhyming over and just rhyming one word at the end of lines he would rhyme two. Game tight /its game night i flame pipes ..he was one of the first to perfect that style He always been in my top 5. Period

Vlad! I am 21 years old and was never taught about the Tulsa Race Riots or Black Wall Street. I just asked my 60 year old father about it and he had never heard about it either. I did some research about it after watching this video and I'm astonished at the fact that this story has been hidden for so long. If you were to interview someone related to this somehow and bring the story to light it would be much appreciated.

I almost feel like if it wasn't for Kool G Rap we wouldn't have Hip hop as we know it today. Whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion but I think the way he changed the game kinda created a domino effect that led to how rap evolved over time

Kool G. Rap. One of the most successful and dynamic members of Rhyme Syndicate. Ice-T and him introduced us to people we would have never known and who would slay labelled rappers in their time and today. His first two albums have been so heavily sampled by his peers that stuff should be required reading for people studying hip-hop in schools.
