@juniorxeastny81698 жыл бұрын
What a difference a decade makes! I went to college in the '90s, and I remember that usually when I met on campus an Afro-Brit, or Black foreign student from France or Germany, they would not want to call themselves "Black" as they felt the term was negative, and they would complain about how Black students in the U.S. focused on "race" too much, and that we should "get over it!" Now, when I travel I am meeting not just Afro-Brits who are militant and race conscious, but South Asian/Indian and Afro-French/German Blacks who are political as well. This is a huge change from how it was in the late 80s and 1990s.
@fashionablylate8888 жыл бұрын
I know, its mad. African-American history is a little different to Black-Brits though. Us over here mainly come from The West Indies and our ancestors were forced to breed with europeans in Spain before they went to Jamaica, and then forced to breed with Europeans in Jamaica, whereas AA's went STRAIGHT to America. There is only one name for Black people, and that is African. Anything else is genetically incorrect.

It must have been their environment because from my personal upbringing this hasn't been the case. I'm old enough to remember my dad playing records like 'Black and Proud', Curtis Mayfield other AA artists who sang about racial issues they faced in America. The late 80's is when I started to attend meetings and various events on Black consciousness. Those people you met must have been ashamed of their identity cause trust me the Black people in France are much more disenfranchised than those in Britain..

Akala is honestly one of the best public speakers, I've seen. He speaks with passion in such a respectable and well-spoken mannerism - I've seen him on TV shows in the UK standing up for the Pakistanis and Bengalis in the UK who were faced with a ton of accusations, Muslims, Racial Diversity AND more. His arguments are based on fact, and rarely opinion... something a lot of Brits in the North (Which is where I live) don't.
@zein69778 жыл бұрын
***** Hey, I would say the part in London you're referring to is only "Tower Hamlets" which is full of mainly Bengalis, and next to Canary Wharf quarter... a lot of Pakistanis actually tend to be up north. Yeah, I don't agree - that's wrong. Immigrants, Pakistanis, Bengalis, Africans, Middle Easterns can give racism as well as take it... But, the truth is Black British and Pakistanis/Bengalis have had racial attacks more than others in the UK - which is why I state what I did. I take your argument on board, and anyone can be racist!
@zein69778 жыл бұрын
***** I don't know why the immigrants don't... I can't answer that. My initial comments are referring to the British Born Pakistanis, Muslims, Asians, Chinese etc.
@bluveto57588 жыл бұрын
Tower Hamlets might be majority bengali but neighbouring Newham has a large Pakistani population. In Redbridge which borders Newham Pakistanis are the largest ethnic group. Another neighbouring borough Waltham Forest also has a substantial Pakistani population. Barking and Dagenham bordering Redbridge also has a significant Pakistani population. Londons Pakistani community is representative of the whole of Pakistan. Panjabis, Pathaans, Urdu Speakers, Kashmiris, Balouchis, Sindhis are all represented. Northern Pakistani communities are mainly representative of a small part of rural Azad Kashmir and Jhelum around the Mangla Dam resettlement. I think that's why northerners have a warped view of Pakistanis.
@bluveto57588 жыл бұрын
***** What about the right of Muslims to live in their own countries in peace. America Britain France go around the world bombing and invading Muslim countries arming militant groups to carry out regime change and you sit here and complain about Muslims being in the UK as citizens. Disgraceful!
@zein69778 жыл бұрын
Eh, I don't know how this post became a debate about Muslims in the U.K. - all I'm saying is Akala stands up for the Muslims, Pakistanis etc.

Racism was definitely a big issue in the UK in the 80s- I'm from Liverpool myself and we had race riots in Toxteth back in the day. Today, however, its much more of an issue of class than race. Being white and working class, me and my family have been treated like shit by police on many occasions for no reason whatsoever (my dad's not long won a court case against the police and is still getting harassed for it). And having had black and white working class friends who've had the shit beaten out of them by police for the exact same reasons, I can say from experience that the working class are the targets here. Working class areas which are predominantly white, black, asian, or any combination of races in every major city in the country are essentially ghettos.
@scarlao5 жыл бұрын
If you are white, how would you know if race is a problem? LOL makes no fucking sense.
@scarlao5 жыл бұрын
@Jdjdj smith: He is a white man telling POC there is hardly a race problem. That makes no sense. I live in the UK, there definitely is a race issue. Is that a coincidence? No. It is because he is a white man. I didn't say you had to be black to know there is a race issue. I also didn't say that only black people suffer. Don't put words into my mouth, stupid fuck😘😘😘
@scarlao5 жыл бұрын
@Jdjdj smith He said "working class are the targets here" but that isn't completely true. If, for example, you are black and working class it is a lot worse then being white and working class. What does the example about Glasgow prove? That racism isn't an issue because of white on white crime in Scotland? Your example didn't back up your arguement at all. It was just a random fact.
@W..9495 жыл бұрын
Siobhan O'Connor and you are a POC telling a white man there is a problem. You think you can speak on behalf or about other races but they can’t speak about you?
@W..9495 жыл бұрын
Siobhan O'Connor what statistical evidence do you have to suggest black working class have it worse than white working class. Because from the statistics I’ve seen white working class people are performing worse than blacks in all aspects of life whether it is schooling or economically?

Mixed race people are generally viewed as black when the persons parental heritage is unknown. Only because we know Akala is mixed race do we consider him to be mixed race, if we didn't know his mother was 100% white, we'd just assume he was a light skinned black guy.
@thehoneyeffect8 жыл бұрын
dan theman Like I've said UK is not London and I'l add that America is not the world. Where Im from in England and to most Black women in the UK, Mixed Race people are seen as being what they are not what a Black man may like them to be seen. To be black in the UK youre gonna need some black parents. You need a Black womb and a black seed to make black people in the UK. Mixed Race is the commonly used term used for Mixed Race people in the UK. However London may subscribe to Americas old racist now defunkt #onedroprule law. Blackness doesnt only belong to Black men, it belongs to Black women too, implying that you dont need Black women to make black people is the erasure of the importance of black women, black womens erasure is misogynoir. However people can self identify as they see fit, but dont expect others to join in. Especially now its getting Rachel Dolezal ridiculous... In summary it takes more than just a Black mans dick to make black people.

thehoneyeffect I hear what you're saying and I don't necessarily disagree with you either. All I'm saying is that you cannot know a person is definitely mixed race just by looking at them because there are plenty of light skinned black people that are not mixed race (at least not directly). My father is as light as Akala but he does not have white parents or grand parents. Meanwhile my mother is mixed race (her mother was white) but she is much darker than Akala. So all I am saying is, you can't tell a if a black person is "mixed" just by looking at them, especially not a black person of American or Caribbean decent. If we just assumed every light skinned person was mixed, then most people would consider Prince, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X all to be mixed race (even though none of them have white parents). Also ask almost anybody what race Bob Marley is and they'll say he's black but his father was white. So this isn't really about the "black dick" as you so crassly put it, it's about the large amount of diversity within the black community. There are countless "black" people as light as Akala that do not have white parents, and plenty darker than him that do. Akala looks no more mixed than Prince but Prince is not considered to be mixed race, he's just seen as a light skinned black guy. Meanwhile Halle Berry is darker than Akala but is always considered to be mixed race. Appearances can be deceiving.

Akala told you he is half Scottish (white woman) and half Jamaican ('Black man') theres no need to guess. and he looks Mixed Race to me.... noone stepped of a Slave ship freshly kidnapped from West Africa looking like him. I hear what you are saying, Ive heard simular views mainly from hoteps before...and Im happy to disagree with you.
@dantheman48388 жыл бұрын
thehoneyeffect Yes, I already said that we know he's mixed race and that's the only reason why we consider him to be mixed race. However *if* we didn't know that and he told everybody that both his parents were from Jamaica, nobody would better an eyelid because there are plenty of other light skinned black people in the world who do not have white parentage. Anyway it seems we both understand each others point, even if we do not agree with each other. I have also heard your view before, mainly from uppity black people who think they have the ultimate authority over who can pass for black and who cannot....So I am also happy to disagree with you too.

He has 4 Fire in the Booths which is a set on the BBC 1xtra radio channel. Start with the first one, it will most likely blow your mind. Very meaningful and his flow is great.
@corneliussmith49078 жыл бұрын
Scoobay but he talks a shitload of bollocks. you people lap it up because you want it to be true. example : ' sus law and police treatment has caused crime' nope, the crime caused by blacks causes police to be racist. dealing with aggressive feral youth make them heavy handed or racially profile. akala doesn't talk about the lack of fathers in the black community. the gangster black culture which has caused and influenced crime.
@Scoobay8 жыл бұрын
+Cornelius Smith - Judging by your comment it's plain to see you're very pro-white and have a biased opinion. If you were to listen to Akala's first Fire in the Booth session and then you were to cite which facts you believed to be falsified or exaggerated then I'd be more likely to take what you've said with any credibility. I don't agree with everything Akala says but he's extremely talented and incredibly intelligent for an autodidact. Don't be so presumptuous in future.
@corneliussmith49078 жыл бұрын
Scoobay well i don't have the time to analyze and make points for everything he has said. but he has been wrong a shit load of times. 'you have a biased opinion'. like akala then? who is a pro black pan africanist? who quotes elijah muhammad, malcolm x? he failed going mainstream and decided to pop back up and reinvent himself as a race baiter. for the record i'm half white but that doesn't make my opinion invalid. most recent example? that video where he confronted edl leader tommy robinson. it was a disgusting display by him. akala started with ad homnieum attacks. ' you're a racist'. the crowd always applaud, they have a mob mentality. nothing tommy robinson said was racist. he's never been on record for saying anything that is racist. in fact. the first edl rally had black people there. tommy robinson has black friends. but i digress.- instead of confronting him with logic and reasoning, he shouted racist and racist time and time again along with that bitch sairia khan. when tommy robinson brought up the grooming gangs, akala brought up white peadophiles. it was a strawman ( a logical fallacy) how can you compare pedophiles who get convicted for one crime to systematic rape, molestation of thousand english girls over a period of ten years across several towns in britain? how can you compare that to isolated incidents? the grooming of them, getting them addicted to drugs and geting them drunk, with the youngest age 12? the police covered this up because they were afraid of being called racist. yet akala's main argument for years, has mainained that police are more racist and target people of colour. this disproves him. he also never critcises islam despite it believing in arab supremacy (in the quaran) and the fact that MUSIC IS HARAM. fact is, if fundemental islam ever had it's way, music will be banned. then he bangs on about slavery non stop and yet the arabs started it. SLAVE= SLAV. slavs are white (slavic people). muslims countries still have slaves today, millions of them. fuck islam and fuck any other religion. 'sus laws' have not contributed to the disproportionate crime commited by blacks and he knows it. he even said this at another interview. he also stuck up for mark duggan aka mark thuggan. a vicious criminal with a long rapshot, monitored by englands elite gun unit. he was a thug that terrorised his community. yet akala paints it as injustice. good riddance, black or white- scum need to die. i can go on and on. but i've gone off him. he is a bigger racist. he has a preoccupation of race.

I'm Vietnamese from the UK. Born in 1985 when the national front was strong. I'd say there was racism, and I suffered from it, and my dad got arrested for fighting against racists etc... But it's not as bad as in the USA from what I've read. I grew up in Hackney and school was mixed. We had Indians, West Indians, Africans, Chinese, other Europeans etc... Hackney was truly mixed. I knew I was different though when a white girl I fancied at age 6 told me that I can't be her brother because I'm not white and that this white guy could be lol. In terms of police, just avoid gangs and shit. If you're in a gang, then you're much more a target. Police will try and find a weakness in you to arrest you. Obviously don't get aggressive when they come to you. You play into their hands.

I'm grateful that I saw this. I'm from the US, planning to move to London soon and I was naïve to think that there was way less racism in Britain than the US. This really opened my eyes. Sadly, it's all over the world. But I'm still going to London.

There is definatley still racism in the UK very subtle compared to America. Having said I live in London and it is much more multicultural than most parts of the UK. Don't let it put you off not all white people hate black people. I have a very mixed family and lived in London all my life.
