No music is dead, David. As long as 1 person likes ANY particular style of music, it'll never die. The mindset of people is that if they don't hear it on the radio, it's "dead". You can't kill jazz; just like you can't kill disco. Somewhere, somebody is listening to folk. It's not just about the money that the artist makes...it's about the music. And I truely love it all.

Its the white privilege. We dont care that yall are in hip hop , its just the manifestation of something that has been apart of black music for a long time. That the powers that be, want a white face to front hip hop so middle class white people(who actually buys the music) can spend the money on these artists. Macklemore said in his interview on Hot 97 that he has profanity in his music and he was a former drug addict yet parents come up to him and say his music is what their kids are allowed to listen to. Thats the problem we have.
@themindofdre9 жыл бұрын
Sounds like an easy problem to fix then... Support Black artists. Everyone's complaining about White privilege, but dudes don't support each other. I'm not calling for militant action or another rise of the Black Panthers, but I see dudes hating on each other far too much to come together cohesively to support each other.

do you really think that parents sat down and listened to the whole album... macklemores three songs on the radio which is probably what the parents know about dont talk about money, bitches and luxury. same love, cant hold us and thrift shop. Each has a positive message. Name the last black rapper that made radio friendly hits that had a clear positive message. and theres no profanity on the radio so im sure if parents did research on the artist or their full body of work they may feel different about him.

The takeover is in process bro. The capital is generated by white people , not black people. Were being year by year faded out. The difference between this and what happened with rock music is that blacks haven't abandoned rap music. Rather were being faded out by music corporates who now realize they can sell white rappers and make far more capital. The sad shame is there's nothing we can do. Black people always end up with the crumbs under the stick when it relates to large money outside of only a very tiny few.

Alright here's my take: The first ten minutes Charlamagne had some good points. I don't think that he understood fully what J Cole was saying because from I understood Cole was specifically talking about those four. He was right about Eminem except that he's won awards off some subpar albums. At least that's what people keep saying about Relapse or Recovery. Justin didn't start from the bottom because mickey mouse club set a lot of people up for life. If he started from the bottom then so did Drake, and all you Degrassi fans know what I mean. Thank God I stayed to the Childish Gambino thing. He's acting like "I don't hate the dude I just prefer that Iggy would win by a country mile because Gambino smells bad and would have a weird ass speech. But nah I don't hate him, he just thinks I have a problem with him" I wonder why? I mean how can you give Iggy props but be like, Because the Internet shouldn't win or I'm giving up. Telegraph Ave., Worldstar, Sweatpants, Pink Toes all had great back story and context to them. Something I don't know any of those rappers nominated have done. I would take Gambino over 99% of the rap industry, he's lyrically one of the best.

+losangelescardinals how is comparing timberlake eminem AND macklemore TO ELVIS 'right'? thats wrong on all levels elvis literally stole the culture and stole songs how does that relate to either? JT did in fact have a sorry start lol trying to insinuate being a child star(given 90% go fucking insane) means a successful career i advice you ask brit spears and the rest of n sync how all that worked for them starting from the bottom does not mean by default you were poor its also a matter of where you are at the food chain and in terms of where JT was when n sync was finished he was most def at the bottom the difference with drake is that he claimed to have zero when he started JT never claimed to be broke for the sake of being relate able the elvis line was very petty from j cole
@losangelescardinals9 жыл бұрын
Never said anything about Macklemore or Elvis. And there's a difference from being a child star then fading into abscurity only to come back as part of a pop sensation or something along those lines, and being an actor and transitioning in a rapper. Even though a lot of what you are saying is right I can't agree with anything telling me that Drake and Justin Timberlake's origins are completely different. I could care less about Elvis and I don't even know much about Macklemore. He seems like a good dude but I don't know anything for a fact about him.
@ibringit9879 жыл бұрын
losangelescardinals you said j cole was right didn't you? Well one of the things he did was made a comparison to elvis and em and macklemore or was that an agreement with charlamagne? Either way the origins of JT and drake aren't the issue the fact is from where justin was leading into his transition to hip hop or rnb justin was at the bottom due to the image he created THATS my point going from n sync to a culture where clearly people have a misguided definition of machismo and major insecurity issues is hard for anyone and being white wont make it easier im not talking rich or poor in terms off starting from the bottom im talking place within the food chain drake never had the issue of being within that area
@losangelescardinals9 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not arguing food chain status or transitions from acting to music. I'm referring to lyrics and the context behind them, at least with the case with Drake. Elvis and Macklemore are too relative to my opinion. Not to sound like a douche but I don't have to acknowledge or address that part of Charlamagne's view. By the way it's R&B but that's just technicalities I suppose

Regarding Gambino, "Don't talk your shit and shake hands about it"- Childish Gambino ThIS is why Childish had a problem with Charlamagne. He starts out by talking down on Bino, then follows up by immediately contradicting himself, to only go back on himself again and talk more shit. At this point it doesn't matter anyway, Gambino is doing big things with FX and Atlanta and is still an influential name in rap, despite not having any new music in about two years, and in my opinion has surpassed this entire beef by becoming too big for it. But it's still worth saying that this is either a huge oversight by Charlamagne on not realizing the impact of his own words, or he's just a pompous dickhead. It doesn't matter, this isn't relevant anymore.

I think most white people who listen to rap, like me, really miss the days when Hip Hop was "more black" like in the 90's n'shit. We hate Iggy Azelea too. The problem is, all the executives, white or black, are all looking for the Iggy Azelea type rappers who will sell the most records because they appeal to the mainstream. It's the same in every genre of music nowadays. The only hope for us people who love "real rap" is to root through the underground for the real shit. It's there and its great. Shit's just harder to find nowadays than it used to be. ps: FUCK THE GRAMMYS.

I agree also. Furthermore, it's hard to pay for lessons and instruments when unemployment is twice the national average in our communities. Charlamange has a overly simplistic way of analyzing the world. He secretly plays the middle so as to "not fuck up his money." He has stated this many times before. Conversely, he does speak some truth, but it is marginal at best.

So let me get this straight.... When a white artist enters hip hop and raps about "black people stuff" they complain that they are stealing their culture and their traits and attributes for profit. When they rap about something else like Macklemore and same love it's "You need to rap about what we want you to rap about. You are a guest here". You are all just complaining for the hell of it at this point.

Iggy came to America when she was 16 alone , so IDK. I moved to the South at 13 and I feel like I am from here now at 27. I still had the influence of my family at home, unlike Iggy, so I still have a lot of where I was born in me (accent, food) but I don't have a strong connection. Whenever I visit I feel less and less connected. My brother, who was 17, feels the same way, he even lost his original accent. Our 3 older siblings are so culturally different from us, it's crazy.

I don't think Charlamagne understands his contradiction. Justin Timberlake is talented because he sings, dances, and acts. When it comes to Childish Gambino, he just "stinks." The dude writes, acts, and sings. Donald Glover is a performance artist, just like Timberlake. Charlamagne says some good shit, but lets his personal vendettas distort his message.

He right though. If White People were to take over hip hop, it would have happened already, seriously - look at who they sent to compete, G-Easy (i've never heard a record from the dude to be honest), Asher Roth, MGK, Mac Miller, RiFF RaFF, Bubba Sparx, Chris Webby apparently?, and hell - i'll throw in Action Bronson and Yelawolf in there - cause i'm not talking about skill. I'm talking mainstream success. Most of these guys are one hit scenarios with occasional appearances on a feature, at best.

Something that me and Charlemagne agree on: Schoolboy Q deserves to win the Grammy. I know he won't, but Oxymoron was an amazing album. Plus I could relate to it (not the gang banging), but drug addiction, poverty, shattered family relationships; I went through that shit. Q may be as conceptual as Kendrick, but he has a level of genuine appeal that is rivaled by few in the industry.

+Sean Davis His/her point was that white people buy their music. Without white buyers they would not sell as many records. Eminem appealed to those white wallets that were not really feeling other artists. There are just more white people plain and simple. But the dead in a week comment was not always true. Back in the day few white people were feeling Whoudini and Grand Master Flash. It is true now mostly because HipHop is apart of nearly every popular style of music, even country. EDM is the most popular around the world.

We knew that as soon as Em came in the game and white folks jumped on that album that it wouldn't be long before they start saying that EM was the greatest which isn't true at all.. It's not enough for them to just say he's one of the greatest they have to take it a step further which they aways do.. I was watching a boxing match with one of my white friends and Loma was fighting walters and I like Loma so naturally I wanted him to win and he beat Walter's until he quit and immediately after the fight they started saying that Loma maybe the best fighter ever and at that time I don't think Loma had more than 10 fights and my white friend started saying yeah I think that's right Loma is the greatest boxer ever and I'm like really how in the fuck does that makes any sense lol It's like white people don't feel they have to play by the rules they can just break them and make new ones up as they go on and that's the problem.. I feel bad for Em because he's one of the most humble guys out there and he never says the dumb shit that his rabbit fan base says in fact Em has his own list of rappers that he think are better than him some of which o don't agree with but that's another story.

You need to start saying "american whites" because whites anywhere else in the world aren't like that. Sucks that you bunch all white people together with American whites, pretty much all of us know that Americans are the laughing stock of the world, specifically the white ones.
@user-gq5ry9oy1r5 жыл бұрын
Eminem and that Loma guy (at that point in time anyway) have nothing in common. Em has multiple classic albums and countless classic records to his name, aside from being the most purely lyrically gifted mc of all time. So, he didn't just have 10 fights, he had a couple hundred and won them all. Also, he has sold more records than any rapper in history. His music doesn't just influence white or black people, it impacts people from every race all around the world in ways most black rappers can't do. His music connects with and impacts his respective fanbase as much as any black rapper, if not more. So, he has multiple classic albums, sold an insane amount of records, probably has the biggest fanbase in rap, is lyrically unrivaled, and his music connects with his fans on a psychological and emotional level? In my mind, that makes him the greatest rapper of all time.

I think the best and most summarizing way he made his case was, "It's so much ours, that it's OK to share it." That was put nicely; and I can get with that. There's enough people of color laying the foundation for hip hop to keep anyone else from stealing it or calling it theirs. The thing with rock & roll is different though. Elvis arguably came on the scene in such a way that he was the first face most people so with the label of rock in America.

People need to really understand that Charlemagne is not a smart person. He is of average intelligence at best so when Childish Gambino made his comment about wanting to be white, the comment was so far above Charlemagne's intelligence level that it was inevitable he would misunderstand it and therefore promulgate a false narrative to the masses. He has the media platforms to push this incorrect interpretation. This is what happens when you end up listening to people who are not critical thinkers. When you speak satirically or use metaphors they are not quick enough to pick up on it and miss the point entirely. I listen and watch Charlemagne for entertainment purposes, not to assist me in developing opinions or seeking news. He is not that dude. People, please always seek out people who are smarter than you, that is the only way we learn. If Charlemagne is that smarter than you, then, Oh well. The reason why hip hop fans care about the Grammys is because it is recognition in the eyes of the mainstream which, to an extent, is important.
