Vlog 36 - Lexus GX470 Shift Boot Upgrade

Very easy DIY video for all you GX owners with old dirty shift boots. This mod took roughly an hour and made a nice improvement to the interior of the GX. The best part is there are several color options to customize with your vehicle.

You can trim the rod on the transmission shift rod. It has 3 inches of threading. I chopped mine so that the shift knob is same height as T case handle

I'd go with gun metal matte gray instead of black in the center console to still match the gray interior of your GX

Kind of wish I went that route lol. I do like that the black matches the Phoenix head unit though

I wrapped all the woodgrain trim a while back and the center vents are my problem areas. I like the black paint! New boots look good too. I've got some but just haven't put them on. Great vid! Chomp Chomp!😉

Thanks Randy! Yes, that vent area just has too much temperature variation for vinyl to hold up well…or at least that my theory. The black paint was an easy and nice solution. Oh nice, I’ve seen people use old Crown Royal bags for shift boots. Chomp Chomp!

@@Awesomoto yeah, I agree on the wrap issue. I thought of just getting the silver ones for a Prado 120 and going that route. I'm anxious to see how well the paint holds up on your trim.

@@Randy-hk6vq The Prado trim is a good idea. I too am curious how it holds up. I’m pretty confident in painted surfaces that are properly prepped. You’ll get to see over time how well it holds up. Hopefully it does.

Ready for the backup camera، I changed the front two seat covers from L seat and just paid someone to install since you commented that it would probably be worth the price۔ cost $365 to install but I did have them fix the padding on the driver seat۔ Great Stuff as always keep them coming!

Hey Dan! Thanks for the feedback...It's nice to know the videos are helpful. Unfortunately I haven't found a matching hand brake yet, but I should get back to that search because I think there are many toyota brake handles that will work for this. If I find something, I'll make a new video to document that.

Hello!! Your videos are helping me renovate the interior of my GX470. Wanted to ask if the paint on the air vents worked great through the time. I was planning on doing this for all the wood pieces in the interior and even the steering wheel. I really liked the sand and black color mix.

Apologies for the delay. Great question! The paint is still holding up great and I'm in the intense Florida heat. The black with the sand color does help give some contrast.

I know you made this video some time ago and I really like the black with red stitching, but what do you think of maybe dying those boots in whatever color one would like. I know going from a darker color to a lighter may not turn out that great, but from that original color boot to a black, I think that may also work. What do you think ? I recently saw advertised a '03 GX for sale in SoCal with dyed red interior seats that looked badass !!!

Great suggestion Lenny. I think this is a valid approach for changing the color of the leather shift boots. The timing of your comment is funny because I was looking into leather dye and was considering doing a all black conversion on the interior of my GX. It seems like the dye holds up well too.

in your opinion, how hard would it be to shoot more staples into the plastic? would a regular staple gun likely work?

Hey Trinydex, I think a stable gun would likely help get the staples into the plastic and recommend trying that route...I was just not feeling like riding my motorcycle out to get another stapler while the GX was taken apart.

Good Question! No I never did, but I've considered taking mine off and tracing out each piece of fabric and sewing my own.
