I prefer sprints because when I was in my teens, I was fast and I enjoyed it. Also because I know it helps with explosive counters and strikes in a fight. Never really liked distance running or long periods of "roadwork". But thanks to Sylvie, it finally clicked. Now I understand the mental and physical importance of roadwork for Muay Thai fighting. I work nights and I am often exhausted in the mornings when I get home and do my training. I had been skipping running until yesterday when I saw this video. I will go again this morning after I get home from work. 🏃♀️

I appreciate your thoughts as always, Sylvie. I've been following you for some eight years now since I was a teenager - and I'm having my first amateur fight this June. Picking up my roadwork for fight camp has made huge, noticeable changes on my conditioning hitting pads, sparring days, etc. I'm now insufferable and preach the importance of roadwork to everyone at the gym :)

What i think is most important besides building (up) stamina is being "alone with yourself". This is the time you have to face yourself. This is a time to meditate and an exercise in "knowing yourself": your strenghts and weaknesses. Both physical but also - and especially - mentally! There's a saying that goes "to truly understand the value of what you have, you'll have to loose it". This is very much true: i would give anything to be able to run again! Don't wait and let time run away with it all!

You know what that’s a good point just because you fight in short bursts at times doesn’t change the fact you still need conditioning running offers that endurance the will to go on and actually has been proven to condition shins

Maybe running doesn't help for the most short intense moments in the combat, but for sure helps in all other aspects. Obviously helps in the cardio then while your are between these short intense moments, your recovery is faster, the respiratory efficiency of your organism is better. Even bodybuilders will benefit from it, running gives the sign to your body cells to produce more mitochondrion and to find more efficient ways to use energy, for fight, for weights, for LIVE. Just this last point should be enough, run more, live better. Our heart thanks. Another aspect I consider very important is the mind exercise running is. Yes, mind exercise. Of course we are using our body, but don't forget, body and mind are linked haha So when you're running, your knee is hurting, your feet, whatever and you can't stop, you are enduring your mind. It's like fighting, you can't stop. One last point: Don't run in the running machine! When you do it, part of the work of push your body forward is made by the machine! When you run in the street your legs, glutes, hamstrings are contracting and pushing the ground, moving your body. In the machine you are pushing something thats moving, than the effort is reduced. Is like when we are lifting weights and cheat to keep going, but in running

Your last point is interesting, I never knew that - so thank you. How much running would you recommend though? I personally believe 2x a day that most Thai fighters do is way too much.
@mathauscamelattokruger88372 жыл бұрын
@@MinotaurvsCyclops I discovered that recently also, you're welcome haha I don't know the correct frequency, but I agree with you that 2x a day is too much. Many fighters I know run every day once a day, or at least in competition period. I think every day is good because of the habit, but at the same time I don' t if could be too much for our knees, for example. It also will depend on the weight, for heavier people maybe ride a bike would be better. If you don't run, start with day on, day off, then you can gradually increase the distance and/or the speed and find what works for you. You can also intercalate with sprints training for explosive power. Just be careful with your joints!

What’s more important to push hard doing sprints and make it suck and so you know when you compete it’s gonna suck and you can grind through at 150% OR Conditioning yourself to exert at 50 or 60% but at an intensity that feels high to your opponent? You need both but, you should get the heart adaptation from conditioning yourself to run “long distances” I used to run 3 miles 3 days a week & bike 2-3 days a week for 22 miles and sprinted once. Week for 6 sets or 30 seconds on 60 seconds off. However I only did that when I feel I needed but mostly my “intense work” came from jiu jitsu. I competed and won multiple tournaments training cardio this way. You need your aerobic system to help reproduce atp, the short bursts trains the heart to beat harder & stronger squeezing more blood out & the slow cardio enables your heart to oxygenate & take in more blood as well as making it easier to push blood through your body in a nut shell.

Sprints are my thing. The long distance runs I feel like my body just goes into autopilot after awhile. I like to do 2 rounds of suicide sprints. I do that multiple times a week and that's how I get my roadwork in 👍🏿 oh and after you do the sprints starts shadowboxing to emulate the tired feeling during a fight.

I actually started training Muay Thai because I got tired of running soreness. I was too heavy. MT slimmed 30 kg off me in the past year or so and now Im getting back out on the road with an entirely new physique. Life changing sport

I remember when I used to go on 10 km runs each day when training/fighting in Bangkok. Usually at some point I would feel the urge to go to the bathroom which made me run faster and sprint to get back to the bathroom so I guess I got the best of both forms of running. Sometimes I made it in time and sometimes It was too late and I would have to change shorts

How much roadwork do you do, time and distance wise? I'm trying to get into shape so I can start doing some of the physical things I enjoy and I'm currently (at beginner level) on 30 minutes, 3 times a week. I'm going to increase that by 10% each week and then eventually add in additional sessions once I've built up a bit more endurance. I'm currently doing my roadwork/cardio on a spin bike because I've got some knee problems and a bit of a bad back, but I do want to start running too once I've built up a bit more endurance and lost some weight.

How much roadwork should be okay if im under amateur level ( just started 4 months ago ), actually im doing 3 classes/week and doing bag work at home, should i start by creating a habit that i put on my shoes and go run, or start with some 5-8k runs ( probably dont have time for longer distances ) ? Ofcourse in addition im teeping and kneeing the bag to build endurance :)
The loop is better because you have to complete it and not quit. Push a little further every time

Roadwork, the long and boring one kind, is important for ANY sports. Why ? Because humans became the dominant species because they could exhaust their prey by simply willfully run after them for hours and still be able to kill them in a short burst effort after having run those dozen of km. That's what we do.

Good video.I don't really do much martial arts and I never been in a gym what I know about Muay thai is from my brother. I have never run for muay thai and my cardio is pretty bad (even though based on my age and level of experience its no worse than what could be expected) But is it makes that much difference maybe I should start. But to me actually learning how to hit with lots of power footwork seems to be the more important for the first step. I can walk fast and whatever distance is put in front of me. i can walk 30 miles if necessary if its not that hot. but I can't run very fast or for very long time. I don't really like the clinch because its exhausting (although the only person i ever go up against is my brother who is younger in better shape and has more experience than me I might do better with opponent I'm more evenly matched with) but there are ways to combat clinch for example with underhook followed with knees to the legs as you push your opponent off balance with your head. or if opportunity arises underhook and lower his body while delivering knees to the face. Also if he would be resisting bending down too much i would allow him to start moving back up and put him in a standing arm triangle. while in a clinch i can deliver a descent knee but I never tried to deliver the knee on a resisting opponent for obvious reasons when I'm in an actual clinch with my brother we just both try to get a superior position rather then actually hit one another. I guess it isn't realistic but i do this just for fun and only from time to time. but i'm glad you pointed out running good video.
