Oh Sarah, I have stitched since a child, I am now 86! Having just watched your poppy embroidery, I have to say it is one of the loveliest films I have seen in years. You have inspired me. Thank you and I wish you all the very best, keep showing us the magic. Margaret.

You really meant “from scratch!” I read the title of you video and went “La, la, la, from scratch means she will show her sketching skills, la, la, la. WOW! Was I blown away when you gathered your own flowers to start a dye bath! It was so exciting. The music was perfect and I watched spellbound from the very first frame of this video. Thank you for your generosity. This was truly a lovely gift to not only stitchers, but to the world! You are a tonic for my pandemic weary old grey head!

Thank you Sharon! I have to confess I didn't grow the poppies but one has to draw the line somewhere right?!! I so loved making this video; the diggers have now moved into that field and the wild flowers and all the insect life that lived among them has all gone, so I feel at least I made a record of it in some way...:(

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Indeed you have left a record of what was. It is a stunning masterpiece. I watched it again last night. It was brilliantly conceived and executed. Sigh, you did not plant the poppies!! Tee hee, I love your sense of humor, too.

Strainer baby….poppy soup? You’re so clever and creative.. that’s a good project for me I think 🤔 the poppy is my state flower ( California Poppy) your techniques are so clea and easy to understand. I would practice all the stitches too! The colors would be different for us but it would nice to do one of your kits and the go on to my own ideas which you encourage us to do. You are one of a kind, a great all around artist🙏🏽🙋🏻‍♀️ Mia 👍🏽

I’ve just found a whole HEAP of your older videos. You know what that means don’t you??? (Ssssshhhhh…… binge watching) . Sarah, poppies are EASY to grow, just gather some of those poppy heads, leave them to dry off and then shake the seed out. You can shake them directly over a bit of earth or save them in a brown envelope for future use. That’s how they grow in the fields and hedgerows and remember, “if you don’t at first succeed, try, try again”. I’ve got a patch of gorgeous, orange coloured poppies, that grow in abundance for me. Love them.

Did this yesterday with mistles, linen, a scrap of cotton and yarn... got out a shimmer of gray-green in all of them, instead of the expected yellow. Made a small clutch (and learned how to hand-sew pockets in doing so) and although the color is subtle, I love the idea of a thing I made just for myself with the energetic information of this very unusual plant!

wow!! beautiful job! I have a question, why do you use the rectangular frame with push pins and not the circle one?
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer these frames Elena, as the fabric stays tighter than it does in a ring frame. Ring frames can also mark the fabric so I tend to just use them if I'm stitching something circular!

You can add what are called 'modifiers' Sarah which change the acidity of the dye. Sounds a bit scientific but basically lemon juice to add more acidity (in this case to make it pink), iron in the form of rusty nails to make it 'Sadden' (dulls it down) and chalk to make it more alkaline (blue). I recommend treating your fabrics and threads with a mordant first to make the colours stronger and last longer. If you haven't tried dying before onion skins is a great place to start! Have fun!

@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 3 жыл бұрын
I either use the prick and pounce method (we have a video on this, check it out!) or I put it on a light box and trace the design through (you can use a window if you don't have a light box). Use a fine pen and take your time. Have a go on a spare piece of fabric first, it takes practice to be able to do this stage neatly!
@christinenewell2679

I think the key to drawing patterns of your own design is to draw as much as you can on scrap papers or a notebook. Teach your hand to hold your pencil softly and just start with flowing lines and circles. Once you are ‘feeling the pencil love’ you can go on to draw imaginary flowers with bold, flowing lines for eg….. I do this all the time and I embroider the flowers and add embellishment as I want. Sarah’s video of embroidering a butterfly onto a blouse is a good example of this. Once you start you can do anything at all. I like doing little pictures of houses, people, animals….. a sort of picture story. It’s ‘your’ work and it is original to you…. It will look ok. Just think of Picasso 🤪.
