Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Күн бұрын

Today we begin the task of cleaning out the goat shed and we also take a look at the food forest tree rows that we have planted plus we introduce our new geese.
We keep the goats on a deep litter system - where we build up layers of straw in their goat barn. Every so often we need to clean it out and it's even more important to do so today as our goats are expecting kids any day now so we need to keep the barn clean.
I the past we have used the goat bedding to make compost or bokashi but today we are going to use it to mulch our forest garden tree rows/syntropic food forest rows. These linear food forests have apples, plums, Aronia berry and Saskatoon and will benefit from a deep mulching. We use the BCS, our walk behind tractor, to move most of the bedding but also use wheel barrows with the whole family helping.
We also show you our new geese which are the Toulouse breed and talk about why and how we use geese on a permaculture farm.

Hi, great to see you all again, all so happy and working hard as usual. You are always a great inspiration and lift my spirits. This video also reminded me of when I was young….cleaning out the goat shed, hard, smelly work, but enjoyable. Thank you.

Huge job done ! I wish I had as much mulch to spread around ! Is using woodchips’in the goat barn an option ? For sure you wouldn’t need as deep as what was accumulated here !

Very interested in the idea of growing the biomass crop adjacent to the main crop, but I’m curious, did you mean to say half a meter? That seems incredibly close proximity for two rows of trees.

Looks great! Nice to be able to use the goat bedding to close nutrient cycles! Do you have an estimation how many cubic meters of beddig or compost you get per goat per year or so?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Not 100% sure but two years ago when we cleared out the shed we gathered around 16 cubic meters and I’d say this year was way above that! That was keeping three goats over night and inside quite a bit during winter.

Hmm, I think I must be doing something wrong, my goats (Golden Guernsey's) are cleaned out every week. BTW what was the song at the beginning of this vlog?

Yes, a deep litter system does save a ton of work, plus the composting bedding keep the goats warm. We don’t usually leave it two years though but we had a baby….! The song is Better than Two by the Visitants .

This might be a daft question but why don’t the geese just fly away? Do you have to clip their wings?
@ricos1497

I think they deploy the drone with some advanced weaponry to create a strict no-fly zone over the farm.

Actually they don’t fly away and we don’t clip their wings. I think modern gees breeds are just too heavy to really fly. They enjoy the odd glide down the field but that’s about it.

What happened to Mandy the goat?

We had to put Mandy down quite a while ago now, she was quite old and had a few things wrong with her that meant it was better to put her to rest.
