The past couple of weeks have been really busy for us, and we have gotten out of our normal routine. Don't worry - we are still going strong on our whole food, plant-based diet - but we haven't been able to meal prep as much and plan every meal out like we usually do. Life got in the way. We wanted a way to get back on track and we've been wanting to try a "Mary's Mini" for a while, so we decided now would be a great time!
Mary’s Mini is a diet developed by Mary McDougall and her husband Dr. John McDougall. Official called the “Mary’s Mini-McDougall Diet,” they created it as a temporary diet to help people lose weight quickly and easily. Unlike their other programs, Mary’s Mini isn’t really meant to be a lifestyle change - it is just a temporary diet. They suggest you do it for ten days, but also say you can keep doing it longer if desired. It can be used to kick-start a new lifestyle or give your progress an extra boost.

Not sure why you'd go to another blog when you can just go to McDougall's own websiter for info on Mary's Mini. The entire program is free and Mary's Mini is actually in their June 2006 Newsletter.

The problem is that they started with potatoes, moved to Eat To Live Dr. Fuhrman and are doing more moments of McDougall. Honestly, I cycle throughout the year between those. In the Summer, when all the organic produce is available, it is so easy to do Nutritarian and in the Fall, when the root vegetables are abundant, I switch to way more potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Potatoes naturally raise one's serotonin levels - I am a certified Plant-based doc /nutritionist - I consult from South Africa. Potatoes always feature on my clients menus - particularly "normal" savoury potatoes - they have a great serotonin release. Sweet potatoes are also good - but not as high for serotonin. It's a good idea to eat potatoes (any starch) with neutral salads /veggies in order to slow down the release of the starch in the blood/body. Best not to add fruit or high protein food to a potato/starch meal. Jessica - potatoes will reduce depression/anxiety if ever you have it again. Potatoes are a wonder food. I love your channel! I have a psychology degree and have helped many clients relieve /eliminate depression by using food as their "medicine"; and I give guidance on how to change life habits and eating habits; and guidance to transition to this better way of living. Jodi Gould -- Depression has a neurotransmitter component. When a person has it sometimes the serotonin (feel good) levels can be low. Potatoes can raise serotonin levels. I always feel a sense of well being after I have potatoes, so I tend to think that there is something to that.

@@jodigould765 In many cases, depression CAN disappear. What we eat plays a huge role in our emotional and psychological state - adults and kids alike (eg ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar, pms). Substances like Wheat, Alcohol and refined Sugar can play havoc with many peoples emotional and psychological states. Some of us are more reactive/addicted, particularly to these 3 substances, than others are reactive /addicted. Anyone reading this: as far as medication goes, it is BEST to CONSULT a HEALTH PRACTITIONER to ascertain the best meds to be on, if needed, and the best way to wean off medication, if advisable. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe - and often mimic depressive/psychotic states. I, Bev Wium, have noticed with myself and clients, that withdrawal symptoms from Sugar, Alcohol and Wheat can be severe too. Sometimes the withdrawal symptom (eg irritability) can even appear within half an hour of consuming ones "fix" eg a chocolate/a slice of bread/glass of wine, and if one does not get another "fix" the irritability can worsen. Check out Dr Peter Breggin MD - re medication withdrawals. Check out Mary-Ann Shearers story regarding bipolar (Beating bipolar - The Natural Way) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZSpY2xort2XjJY

I went gluten free, plant based, on October 1, 2018 because I also had read that gut health is key to emotional stability. My depression and anxiety have improved immensely but when I’m forced to eat otherwise, because of things I can’t control, I pay for it emotionally. Right now my anxiety level is very high but because I’m aware of the cause it’s easier to manage. When dealing with these issues it’s good to remember the acronym HALT. Never get too hungry, too angry, too lonely or too tired. If you were on fire you would remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL. When you are hit with depression or anxiety remember to stop, drop and ...........! Fill in the blank. Whatever it takes to put out the emotional flames. Most of the time it only takes a few days of eating correctly. Thanks for sharing.

You inspired me to get back on the McDougall lifestyle a couple of months ago. I'd been doing OMAD for almost two years, but I found that I was getting out of control with my actual food choices for that one meal. Going back to a WFPB diet has been a breeze and I love being able to eat throughout the day rather than just once. The weight started dropping off when I felt certain that it would not. Kinda magical, lol! You two have such wonderful outlooks that it makes my day to watch one of your videos. Oh, and I love the one about the chili cheese popcorn! I have been thinking about doing a Mary’s Mini too. I’ve never tried it before but I have been snacking on Lara Bars as well along with too much fruit. I’ll be interested to see what you make with the potatoes. Right now I could live on air fried potato wedges. Keep up the good work Jessica and Brian!

Juliana Yanes For me, I need to be careful. Particularly with dried fruit. I’m a sugar addict and it’s a trigger for me. I am better off with starch and veg. I eat fruit but need to keep it in check.

Juliana Yanes I’m well aware of the differences between complex and simple carbohydrates. My issue is simply too much of anything that I view as “sweet” can be a trigger. I’ve been doing WFPB for 7 years. Thanks.

Juliana Yanes Keep at it. It’s a great way of life. I stray from time to time (not meat or cheese just vegan junk food) but overall feel so much better than I did years ago.

I am following on your heels without even trying. I am doing salads right now and they are surprisingly filling and I already am planning on doing potatoes in the Fall. I almost started now, but it is so easy to get vegetables right now that I felt like I wanted to stay high nutrition now and move toward potatoes in the Fall.

Hi you guys! As always, LOVE the videos. So thank you. Jessica, I want to first say thank you for sharing a little about your emotional ups and downs. I, too, deal with both anxiety and depression. It's well managed, something I feel incredibly grateful for, but goodness it's not always easy. I just wanted to share something that lately has helped with me, and that you might find helpful too. The celery juice challenge. Sounds kinda crazy, but I'm into it. I feel like it helps with my mood and prevents blood sugar drops. Anyway, that's all. Hope all is well!
@shannanhough8179
@shannanhough8179 5 жыл бұрын
To clarify, it's just 16 oz of freshly juiced organic celery on an empty stomach. Wait 20 min to eat, but then resume your normal diet. So, you aren't depriving yourself of food. You're just adding in the juice.

Glad to know you are starting MM diet! I began 4 days ago. Actually I found out about the diet in one of our videos. I found extreme for me to do the two weeks potato diet, but when you mention MM diets, I wanted to give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and resources. Love your dogs!!! They are really cute.

Jessica do you feel like your depression and anxiety has gotten better since you went plant-based? I have been reading a lot of articles about gut health and how our gut biome really is connected with our emotional well-being. It's really interesting stuff. As usual awesome video :)

Another great video! I really like how you both keep moving forward in your eating journey and are not afraid to try new things/ways of eating while staying true to yourselves. I am working with Gundry's Diet Evolution and am both challenged by it and love the whole food life change. And, of course, Peef is adorable! Yet another reason to watch. 😊
