It seems like this is the summer of moths for me! I recently found some elephant hawk moth caterpillars in my garden (which are one of the most common species in England apparently) and they are bonkers huge, around 9cm (3.5 inches)! They also overwinter as pupae, which I think is fascinating. I also saw a hummingbird hawk moth, which was one of the most incredible creatures I've ever seen, hands down. They are so unique, especially in their movement, and absolutely beautiful too. Thanks for more great moth content!

as an amateur moth enthusiast it's great to see a spotlight put on these awesome critters... saturniids have always been some of my favourites since they have quite a few of the big and flashy moths (i have an atlas male mount on my wall!), but sphingidae are also really cool cuz of their awesome wing shapes, very pointy and iconic! and lasiocampidae are so precious, the tend to be kind of fluffy which is such a curious characteristic to have? moths are such a huge range of wonderful animals that get a bad rap it's not fair ;; i think it would be cool to study them, but i heard one lepidopterist recount something to the effect of "it's mostly staring at bug genitalia trying to figure out what species is what" which, while funny, sounds incredibly........... Hm.

YES HANK, YES!! #MothsMatter Moths are marvellous! In the UK we have caterpillars that look like lobsters, that are aquatic, that can hibernate through 3 winters! Adults that look like twigs (Buff tip) or Maple seed cases (Scorched wing). Then the names! Some named after their patterns; resembling architecture (Gothic), or named for their beauty (Mervielle du Jour(Joy of the day)). Colours; greens in spring and yellows in autumn, to better camouflage themselves. Wingless females and caterpillars named after their smell (Goat moth). Micro moths smaller than a penny with colours of a clownfish or those that resemble bird poo! MOTHS ARE AMAZING! Thank you for bring this to all Nerdfighters!

I had read a long time ago that moths and butterflies were both Lepidoptera. The only true variance between moths and butterflies being their activity cycles. Now, seeing your cladogram, and hearing this new info I have learned (or re-learned) something. Thanks Hank.

I just got existential crisis from this video. These caterpillars live most of their life only to become a moth, and live their hole moth life only to make eggs and die. Purposeless lives lived with no enjoyment, with the only focus to rush death and maybe spread your genes if you're lucky. That is so sad in a way, and if you think about it, human lives aren't that incredibly different from that sad unavoidable fate :(

Regarding the branding-naming issue, in Danish the word for butterfly is _sommerfugl_ (the g is silent), which means 'bird of summer' - that's very pretty and cute and etc. The word for moth is _natsværmer_ which means 'night-swarmer'. That doesn't sound like an adorable, beautiful and fluffy little cuties that moths actually are. It sounds like some terrifying mythological monster that swarms at night and steals babies or eats corpses or something

Eventually you just got to own up to the phylogeny and admit that butterflies are just a colorful group of moths, but for now let us imagine how we felt seeing moths and butterflies as children. Nostalgia complete. Butterflies are just Tron moths and always were.
