Can confirm, in Taiwan, we do call them that. Flipped car fish. I don't know why. There was an event in 2002 at one of the coastal cities to sort of celebrate and raise awareness about the fish, but because so many people thought that going to such an event might bring bad luck (that it would increase the chance of getting into a car crash), few attended. They tried to change the name to something else (to "Mambo fish") but the "flip-car fish" name stuck.

It's also moonfish in Hungarian. I suspect one guy with his own travel accounts from the Pacific/Atlantic came back to Europe and dubbed it moonfish, and most everyone agreed to take him on his word that it should be called that way. Then translations were made, again without feeling the need to make a distinction. Except for English. The English are strange.

1:51 lol I live in Taiwan and just realized how funny the word for sunfish is! sunfish is " 翻車魚" in Traditional Chinese. " 翻" means flippled or toppled, "車" means car, and "魚" means fish, so sunfish literally means "toppled car fish" lol
