Regarding those statistics on car accident deaths, they don't give a very good perspective of how much safer the Autobahn really is. They fail to equate for the increased traffic on the Autobahn in comparison to rural roads. What you need is not a statistic on what percentage of car accidents resulting in death on the Autobahn vs rural roads, but rather a statistic on deaths per driver on the autobahn vs rural roads. Better yet, analyze not just fatal accidents, but others as well, with non-fatal related injuries. I expect that the final conclusion, that the Autobahn is safer, would be the same, but my a much larger margin.
@billkammermeier8 жыл бұрын
The highway vs rural road death statistics are similar in the U.S. as well. The reason is, because in rural areas you are more likely to hit wildlife, the roads aren't as good of a quality, can have sharper turns and blind spots that highways wouldn't have, and response times for emergency services to get to you are longer if you do wreck.
@billkammermeier8 жыл бұрын
I also believe Hitler is credited for vastly expanding the autobahn as he viewed the expansion of it as necessary to quickly move military vehicles around, so even if he didn't "invent" I think he is credited with pushing to have the size and scope of it greatly increased.
@bramscheDave8 жыл бұрын
The big difference between the Autobahn and rural roads is the central reservation. The big thick metal barrier stops cars from drifting into oncoming traffic. Only a really determined semi will be able to get through the barrier. There are some "Geisterfahrer" (Ghost-drivers, people who join the Autobahn in the wrong direction), but they are fairly few and far between. On rural roads, there is nothing to stop a driver drifting into your lane. You also get impatient drivers trying to overtake at dangerous places, such as coming up on a blind corner.
@canuzzi8 жыл бұрын
The plans for vastly expanding the autobahn were already in place. Also the means to do it - from a socialdemocratic plan to reduce unempolmyment.

The problem isn't the trees. I've driven hundreds of thousands of kilometres on German country roads and never found a tree that has leapt out in front of my car. You have to lose control of your vehicle, leave the carriage way, go over the verge, the pavement (in many cases) and then you hit the tree. Also, generally, hitting a tree off the side of the road at the posted speeds should not be fatal. Hitting a tree at over 160km/h, yes, pretty much fatal. I would go as far to say that excessive speed, poor judgement and, often, alcohol are the major contributing factors for traffic fatalities in conjunction with trees. B-roads (equivalent to British A-roads) are more dangerous than the autobahn, mainly because of f'wits who get impatient and try and overtake when it isn't safe or the drive too close to the vehicle in front.
@Siggy48447 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest problems on rural roads is the fact that there are often no median dividers and traffic comes from both directions on usually just a single lane each way. All too often people will pass a slower vehicle at the wrong time and end up in a head-on collision. Plus rural roads do tend to have sharper curves, like you said, and sometimes have other roads crossing them as well because they lack overpasses.

I have driven on the Abahn many times. In both the North and South. The rules are simple and everyone follows them. Lane discipline is what makes it work. In my opinion, Speeds over 155 MPH is beyond the design of the roadway… you simply cannot see far enough ahead to safely travel that fast. The competency of German drivers is excellent, they really pay attention to the task and they know and comply with the rules AND are the most courteous in the world.

02:57 German road safety: more fun facts:- - Germany has some of the best-trained drivers and some of the best-maintained roads and vehicles in the world. You would therefore expect her road safety record to be head and shoulders above everyone else, but it isn't. International bodies such as the European Union, the World Health Organisation, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Union regularly publish studies which compare the road safety performance of most of the world's countries, and although they use different methodologies and datasets, they _all_ agree that Germany's overall road safety record is just average for the industrialised nations - nowhere near the top. The European Traffic Safety Council, for example, rates Germany in tenth place for all European countries, and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) doesn't even list Germany in its top ten; - These same studies also show that the Autobahn is safer than the motorway systems of most countries, but consistently less so than others, including the United Kingdom. This is surprising, because hardly any British drivers have been trained on this type of road (learner drivers were banned from them until 2018, and post-test lessons have never been mandatory). So for sixty years, nearly all of Britain's motorway users were self-taught - yet they have always recorded fewer deaths per billion vehicle-kilometres than their highly-trained German counterparts! - Contrary to what you might think, the number of accidents of all types is actually greater on the sections of the Autobahn where there is a speed limit. A 2019 study found that for every billion kilometers driven, 79.9 happened on the restricted sections, and 71.4 on the rest. HOWEVER the same study also found that the number of KSI's (people Killed or Seriously Injured) was much greater on the unrestricted sections, with 0.95 per billion vehicle-kilometres where speed limits were imposed, as opposed to 1.67 where they were not. That's over 75% more. Now don't get me wrong: I'm not suggesting that German drivers are bad and British ones are better; what I am saying is that appearances can be deceptive, and it doesn't help when we fixate on minutiae. There are lots of these videos on KZbin, and judging by the comments, there is a clear perception that German motorists are God's gift to the motoring world; what's more, these judgements seem to be based on just two observations. Well, just because a nation's drivers know which lanes to use on their own motorways, and they pull over to let other people overtake, it doesn't make them supermen - and it doesn't mean they're more likely to get from A to B in one piece.

One Reason the accident rate on the rural road is much higher than on autobahns could be the fact, that they happen after a long fast ride on the Autobahn underastemating the speed. The Accidentrate on autobahns is not only lower than on rural roads but it is also one of the lowest in the world. But reason number one is speeding. Also many autobahn tourists will be disapointed because of the dense of traffic, jams of trucks (booming econemy)and jams period. All that makes the everage speed lower than in many other countries. I think the german problem (flow of traffic) is caused by the extremely different speeds driven on the autobahn. My expirience on american highways is, that you have bumper to bumper traffic and the flow is still not disturbed. On Autobahns you have 10 Cars on it and you standing still. I am not an expert but I compare that situation with a groub of soldiers marching. As long they marching in commen the flow is going well and you can even easy merge in. As soon somebody goes to slow it forces one by one to slow down until somebody has to stop. This situation on Autobahns causes jams 10 km long and it explains why we have them without any reason like accidents or so. Driving overhere you will expirience that all of a suddon you have a jam and just as fast as they appier they disappier. And you wonder "hey what was going on?" Entering the highway in the US (Atlanta) also is saver than entering the autobahn. You come down from a straight ramp and see on the highway an ocean of cars on 10 lanes each direction. You start praying " My god help me to make it on there". But surprise surprise its easy. On the straight ramp you can already speed up, you see the flow infront of you , you adjust the speed and merge in. Easy! no Speedy Gonzales scares you. Not so in germany. There is no ramp but a very tight curve you have to go through very slow. You don't see yet what is going on infront of you until you are on that speeding up lane. Now you don"t have no time for praying. You have to speed up to a airplane speed, you are so busy looking in the mirror and at the same time you have to watch when excelerationlane ends. Plus you have to decide, do I make it infront of that truck or do I enter behind it. After you are on it you have time to talk to god "Thank you lord, I made it". It still doesn't change the fact that the autobahn is saver then elsewhere. But there is lot what we could learn from the USA to make it even safer. (Please excuse my spelling there are a lot of words what just dont look right. I'm german)
@DefinitelyGerman7 жыл бұрын
No problem, Gerhard! Thanks for the long comment! :)
@EnjoyFirefighting7 жыл бұрын
the reason for higher accident rates on rural roads for sure isn't primarily due to people which drove on the highway and underestimate their speed after taking the exit ... in many areas you're far away from the highway and accidents still happen for many different reasons: wide vehicles, narrow roads, vehicles passing each other while approaching blind spots, distracted driving, use of mobile devices while driving etc Apart from that, many highways in Germany are and remain more or less empty most of the time, without enormous problems with rush hour traffic and traffic jams with the exceptions of few short city passages; Some examples are e.g. BAB 20 Baltic Sea Highway, BAB 29 Jade Line, BAB 93 ... " Entering the highway in the US (Atlanta) also is saver than entering the autobahn. You come down from a straight ramp " stating that you somehow state that all on-ramps in Germany would be twisted or whatever, however there're also many straight on-ramps and exits in Germany as well; And those which begin with one or two curves, you only have to speed up to the speed of the trucks to be able to merge safely

I noticed there seemed to be very polite drivers in Germany, It was a small town I visited, but several times when we went to cross a road, nearly every car would stop to let us pass. They were always coming from a main road onto a side road so I don't know if that is the norm in Germany.
@Rechtsamwald8 жыл бұрын
Since you are part of the traffic even on foot, a german driver should let you cross the side road, before turning into it (as you were an oncoming car). This always is a rule for cars regarding bicycles and pedestrians, if a traffic light doesn't tell otherwise. At least this is what we are taught in our driving schools. Later, as you drive a couple of years, it unofficially becomes kind of "optional", because very often pedestrians notice those cars willing to turn and they stop to let the car pass. Then eye contact and gestures are the key :) As always, there are exceptions for people and their temperament, but the very large part of german traffic is reasonable and thoughtful.
