You should find some stories about Jet fighters being introduced during ww2 by the Germans. Lets just say the pilots were doing a lot of screaming while flying since man had not been use to going so fast, lets just say they didn't have a huge impact in ww2 😅

Edith Cavell is buried in my home city, Norwich, in the grounds of the cathedral. As for the year WW1 ended, you will see 1914-1918 on most war memorials in the UK, but there are some engraved with 1914-1919 - Cambridge is an example. Good video.

It had Canadian soldiers, dead bodies, rats and the sounds of bombs , grenades, screaming, . It was very intense and incredibly realistic

Two most prominent movements that helped stage the assassination are Young Bosnia (separatist movement that wanted Bosnia to be a part of bigger South Slavic nation) of which many perpetrators were members of and Black Hand (firstly formed by the name Unity or Death by high ranking individuals in Serbian Royal Army with the goal of uniting Bosnia with Serbia) that was the main organizer of the assassination, the most prominent figure of the Black Hand was Dragutin Dimitrijevic nicknamed Apis, he was highest ranking officer of intelligence corps of the Serbian Royal Army and one of the founders of the organisation, he was later executed in Salonica because of his exploits and ties to the movement under pretense that he was planning to assassinate the Royal Regent Alexander but it was a mock trial with sentence already determined before the trial it is highly unlikely that he ever planned such a thing.

I had a German prof in University. He had grown up under the Nazi regime. When all the jokes started in the 80’s around the French not letting US aircraft overfly on their way to bomb Libya( French rifle, lightly used, only dropped once…) he was leading a discussion in out WWI class. A freshman brought up a joke and got a few giggles. He replied that the veterans of his youth, mostly ex WWI soldiers had a much deeper respect for the French Pilous. He said that after fighting the French for nearly a year at Verdun any who would talk of it would only describe the sheer determination of those men. On a side note, as a 13 year old Hitler Youth conscript, he spent three weeks digging anti tank ditches on the Oder. He said it took the Russians a bit longer than an afternoon to get through.

My grandfather Served in WWI in the Highland Light Infantry during the battle at Atta Bara. He had already served in the Seaforth Highlanders in the Sudan where he was wounded, and he returned to Duty just as the Second Anglo-Boer War broke out. He survived Black Week with a wound to his arm. He was later a POW until 1901 I believe it was. So war and battlefields were not something new to him when as a 40-year-old-plus soldier he found himself out on no man's land searching amongst the dead and wounded for his brother-in-law also in the HLI . He located men he knew, offered them rum from his canteen, and moved on. His saddest memory was finding the young Bugle Boy John Cameron and staying with him. In the end, his brother-in-law returned after breaking away from being pinned down by Turkish troops for most of the day.

Cause of World War I? >Crown prince of Austro-Hungary is assassinated by Serb nationalists within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. >Astro-Hungary declares war on Serbia even though the Serbian government had nothing to do with it >Austro-Hungary declaring war on Serbia causes Russia to declare war on Austro-Hungary >Because of a mutual defense pact, Russia declaring war on Austro-Hungary causes Germany to declare war on Russia >Because of a mutual defense pact specifically regarding Germany, Germany declaring war on Russia causes France to declare war on Germany >Germany realizes they probably shouldn't fight both the Russians and the French at the same time, so they reason it's best to knock out France fast (they did it 40 years ago) >Rather than invade France directly, Germany invades through the low countries, effectively declaring war on Belgium >Because of a mutual defense pact, Germany invading belgium causes Britain to declare war on Germany >Italy, though technically being allied with the central powers, it was only a *defensive* treaty, and since Austro-Hungary were the *aggressors* in this war... CHANGE SIDES >Arguably the Germans kind of dragged the Ottoman Empire into the war, or maybe they didn't... we'll never know for sure.

I'm glad you mentioned the continued fighting after the armistice in 1918. The "fallout wars" of World War I don't get as much attention in the west, as the narrative is the war ended on Nov 11, 1918. But you had fighting continue through 1919 and one can argue as late as like 1922 with the fallout. Some count the Russian Civil War among this, but even if you remove that you still have conflicts like the Polish-Soviet War, Hungarian-Romanian War, and the Greco-Turkish War.

How many countries fought? or When did the war end? are both open to interpretation. I’d challenge their answer for number of countries that fought. If we define a country as a self-governing entity with some degree of autonomy over it’s foreign policy, you can include places like Australia, Canada, NZ and South Africa that were still formally part of the British Empire, but not colonies like India, Burma, Nigeria, Rhodesia, Ceylon, etc. There were also a bunch of Latin American countries like Cuba and Panama that declared war on the Central Powers but did not engage in any hostilities. So the list would read: Entente allies: France, Russia, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Belgium, Luxembourg, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, Portugal, Romania, China, Siam (Thailand), Brazil and USA. Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria. That makes 22. There are a few ambiguous cases. Was the first Republic of Armenia in 1918, recognised by many countries, a belligerent with the Ottomans at the very end? Or the sheikhdom of Kuwait, recognised as an independent state under British protection? Or the Sultanate of Egypt, which broke away from the Ottomans, but the Brits held sway on military matters in WWI? Or the Ukrainian People’s Republic, which signed a peace treaty with the Central Powers and was effectively an ally, fighting Soviet Russia for a few weeks before the latter also signed its own peace with Germany? I’d say all up 24 might be close to an accurate answer. It’s also reasonable to say that Newfoundland was a belligerent like Canada, although some suggest it wasn’t quite as independent. Anyway, the number seems closer to 24 than 32. I think they got 32 by including about 7 Central American states plus Andorra and San Marino that didn’t actually fight.

In my view Germany had not the intention to occupy Paris; the First Army, led by von Kluck, had to crush the main body of the French army, working together with the Second Army led by von Moltke. General Galieni, commander of a 60.000 strong army in Paris, would not stand by passively and decided to break out and attack the German First army in the rear. This led the First Army to change direction in order to attack and destroy Galieni's army, meanwhile taking Paris. Von Kluck made this movement without informing von Moltke who on his turn decided to direct his Second Army more to the south-east, in order to fight the French more effectively and von Moltke did not inform von Kluck of his movement neither! As a consequence a gap of more than 70km arose between both German Armies. General Joffre, commander in chief of the French, saw an unexpected opportunity to attack both German armies in the rear. He did so together with the British Army of John French. And the Germans retreated to the north of the river Aisne.

MI% have admited that Edith Cavell was absolutley a British spy. This leads onto a fascinating comparison. Bitiain, who has historically excelled at propaganda warfare, kicked up an absolute fuss about the atrocity of the execution of a poor innocent nurse ( who was actually a spy) for a trumped up charge of spying, Edith Cavell is still remembered today for it. The Germans had two nurses shot for the same reason by the French. Their take was "Fairenough". Nobody remembers those women.

Most questions were really easy, some were a bit tricky (like for example with just how many nations were involved, and I also didn't know about the name of the nurse) and agree that the last question is also one where the answer is... Not all that clear. I decided to check how it's listed on Wikipedia (and yes, before someone mentiones it, I am aware that there are errors and inconsistencies on that one - in fact, I think this is one of the latter, actually); and funnily enough, right on the very top it lists it as "World War I[j] or the First World War (28 July 1914 - 11 November 1918)", so the famous armistice where they waited for the numbers 11 to line up so it would look nicer on paper. Yet at the same time, it's also mentioned on the very same page "A formal state of war between the two sides persisted for another seven months, until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles with Germany on 28 June 1919." so I would indeed argue... If the war formally ran until 1919, it would make sense to list that as the end date of the war. Again, I do also understand the logic of saying that just because it is or is not de jure one thing, it might not de facto be the same. In this case; like with the two Koreas as the perfect example, they can still be formally at war, but if no fighting is actually going on, then is it really a "war" per se? ...of course, then one could ALSO come and say "Well, what about the cold war; that also had 'war' in the name" etc. etc. Anyway, pretty neat video. As for the questions, even though I'm not a historian or nowhere near that, I would have kind of liked generally some more difficult or tricky ones, as most of them were VERY easy.

Kaiser is the Germanic version of Caesar. Those big passenger liners were faster than uBoats, so didn't bother with convoys, but they could be sunk nonetheless. Mons would count as a Pyrrhic Victory for the Germans. They lost many men, and never achieved the primary objective. Canadian troops were in the line next to French African Territorial Troops for their first battle of WWI, that the Germans thought little of, so they chose that point for the first major gas attack. The French troops were terrified and those still alive fled. The Canadians threw reserves in and stopped the German advance. That night the Canadians launched a small counter-offensive and drove the Germans out of Kitcheners' Wood. Field-Marshall Foch noted that it was the first time territorial troops gave a European force a defeat in Europe.

I would say it became a war when Russia was involved, as its territory covers both Europe and Asia and it therefore becomes a "world war". However, I myself would use the Japanese declaration of war instead of the colonies/commonwealth, as these were still technically part of Britain in 1914 and automatically involved.

number 2 is a trick question as the answer isn't there. what started WW1 was bringing Britain in to the war through the invasion of Belgium. yes, the actual war started when Austria declared war or the assassination of Ferdinand, but it went from a European war to a world war when Britain entered as all the colonies of the other powers were cut off from each other by British colonies. if Britain never gets involved then its likely that no battles take place outside of Europe.

England - not sure what the Scots, Welsh & (at the time Irish) would make of that. plus there hasn't been a King or Queen of England since the 30th April 1707 with the Act of Union.

World War 1 quiz, let's go
@RogueDragon05
@RogueDragon05 28 күн бұрын
The question about how many countries fought in WW1 has alota wiggle room, for example yes Canada sent solders and they fought in the conflict but legally Canada didn't have any choice as they were obligated to send troops if England demanded them and it did. I'd call it questionable to say that Canada was even it's own nation at that point if you can't even choose when you go to war and with who.
@pugh783
@pugh783 28 күн бұрын
The Canadian government at the time was able to determine the level of involvement Canada would have in the war meaning Canada did not have to send a single troop to the front if it did not want to.
@RogueDragon05
@RogueDragon05 28 күн бұрын
@@pugh783 OK so I researched this more, while you are correct when you say that how Canada responded and what degree of support they offered was up to them this is from the official government website of Canada itself. "when Britain was at war, Canada was at war because of its legal status as a British Dominion, which left foreign policy decisions in the hands of the British Parliament." So while they did not have to send troops they did not have a say in declaring war with Germany which was the original question and like I said I find it hard to say that your your own country if you can't even have a say in who your at war. But I conceed and admit I was wrong about being required to send troops.

What about Newfoundland, which was a separate Dominion to Canada until 1949?
@RogueDragon05
@RogueDragon05 20 күн бұрын
@@IanKerridge-gg7gl I wouldn't know but a casual search showed that even though they'd not formed a military unit since 1870 they did send troops to fight for the British, I don't know if they were required too or not. The unit that fought at Battle of the Somme was almost completely annihilated.

Wouldn't the IMMEDIATE cause of the war be the ultimatum that Austria gave Serbia as a result of the assasination? I got three wrong.

Your main failing is that Franz Joseph was KAISER of the Austrian Empire but KOENIG (KING) of Hungary = the Dual monarchy, so the correct title was Kaiser und Koenig, and that was also the official abbreviation of the term for Austro-Hungarian forces in WW1 = KuK.

No 7 questions as it is phrased is wrong, cause organization responsible for killing archduke was called Young Bosnia (which was anarchist pan-slavic organization) and they were given logistical support by Black Hand (which was Serbian nationalist shadow group) and it was they who originated the plan for assassination but it was carried out by Young Bosnia which was a different organization.

You WANNA SEE BATTLEFIELDS, GO TO WIPERS OR YPRES, you are surrounded by them, all within a couple of miles of each other, the Trench experience in the Main museum there, is unbelievable, my grandfather, was in the Great War, and mustard gas, injured him later in the war, it eventually killed him, as he would be ok for a couple of years, then he would have outbreak of blisters, all over his body, and thats without what was going on inside of him, he died aged about 50, when I was little. I have studied, collected books, items from Gt. War, all my life, in depth, am now 65, I went to the Ypres/Passiondale battlefields, about 5/6 years ago, the history of the Great War, the orig. trenches, etc is mindblowing, was there 4 days, and still did'nt see everything, and I was not hanging about, had own car, and I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT, IN A HISTORICAL SENSE, and when you look at the village of Passiondale, from Ypres, such a short distance, and so much loss. I must admit I wept at the Cemetary there, for the LOST GENERATIONS, and what my Grandfather went through. THOSE WHO FORGET HISTORY, WILL NEVER EVER LEARN !!!!, The human race, never learns, once the people who went through such times are gone, they slide back into War again. !!!!!! Steve From LONDON UK
