Why? Wilson was just a reflection of his time. People seem to think that racism was solely a Southern problem. We just didn't hide ours like the rest of the country did. Also. I think FDR did much worse when he put American citizens of Japanese decent into Prison camps and had the US government seize their property and assets. Or JFK nearly starting a nuclear war.

To be fair to Wilson (whoa guys, settle down), he was elected in November of 1916, the Zimmerman Telegram was January 1917, Inauguration was March 4, 1917, and Wilson called for war before Congress on April 2, 1917 (and they agreed 82-6). FDR asked Congress to declare war against Japan the same year he was re-inaugurated after campaigning that "The nation will remain a neutral nation, as long as it remains within my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the United States" The way you said it made it sound like you thought it was an unfounded about-face... tho I'm pretty sure that's *not* how you actually see it. (That said, Sedition Acts can bugger off, whether it's Wilson, Adams, or what Bush tried to push through)

You forgot the Black Tom explosions that happened July 30, 1916 due to agents of the then German Empire. Yes, James Buchanan is remembered for his inaction, but he did also MAKE some very bad decisions such as endorsing the pro-slavery Lecompton constitution in Kansas when it was clear that the majority of the people living in Kansas were not pro-slavery. And made very plain that the really challenging part will be the rebuilding/reconstruction of Iraq into hopefully a good democratic, non-dictatorship nation and it will take many years and should absolutely NOT figure on any sort of quick fixes.

What Harding did is an example of the recent decision by the Supreme Court can have drastic consequence no matter what party or ideology no one should be held unaccountable for there actions.
@Kayvel54
@Kayvel54 3 күн бұрын
That's incorrect. There is accountability. There always was, and there still is. What the recent SCOTUS decision did was put on paper to limit the power of courts of states and the DoJ. To prosecute a President they need to be impeached and convicted by the senate then the DoJ/State courts can go after him for that crime since Conviction just removes him from office. Without that decision in place, A Republican or any party leader that gets into office could go after and prosecute any former or would be future president. A prime example of this would be Trump getting into office and having his DoJ go after Obama, or the state of Texas, on the grounds of murder (he did drone strike US citizens). With the decision that was released they can't do that without congress impeaching and convicting Obama. Without that protection we'll see a back and forth of prosecution of political rivals across the political spectrum. It would undermined the checks and balances that were set in place by the founding fathers.

Great video as always Chris! One nitpick I have is that if you look at the 92 election, after Perot's campaign initally tanked and he dropped out, and after the Democratic convention, Clinton was leading by around 55 to 31 percent. Perot got back in and won the first debate, which boosted his numbers to 19%, but ultimately, it was the economy and the broken pledge that cost Bush the election. If it was a two-way race, Clinton still would have won comfortably (would have been best for the country if Perot won, though).

Another thing people rarely mention about the Bush & Iraq thing - Saddam was being very intentionally uncooperative & threw out UN weapons inspectors. I know it's easily ignored or forgotten now, but Iraq HAD WMDs in the recent past & had even used them against its own people. They finally agreed to cooperate with UN laws & inspections to show they were on the up & up, only to then abruptly stop. Even before the actual invasion, Bush & US officials all but said they will invade if they don't address this & begin cooperation again, but Saddam was defiant & refused. So along with the inaccurate intelligence being provided to Bush & the UN, satellite images showing these mobile sites, and Saddam's refusal to continue cooperating with the UN, it made people on both sides convinced there was something bad they were hiding. I'm seriously not trying to justify anything, the war was definitely a huge mistake, only providing context for those who think it was solely a Bush thing when in reality, 90% of congress agreed & voted for war.
@davidreece5867
@davidreece5867 3 күн бұрын
Actually, the inspectors were allowed back in and were within weeks of a formal report declaring that Iraq had complied with UN resolutions. Iraq had used chemical weapons 15 years before in the Iran-Iraq War and against Kurds and Shi’ite Muslims who were supportive of Iran. So it wasn’t recently. Saddam didn’t want it known by his enemies within and without Iraq because he was afraid of invasion.

It's worth noting that public opinion in other countries who joined the war was very different from public opinion in the US. In the UK there was huge opposition to the Iraq war among the public (though the two main parties did support the war). It was widely known here that the UN weapons inspectors were close to declaring that Iraq didn't actually have WMDs anymore.

The one thing about the Monica Lewinsky scandal that doesn't get talked about enough in that it was less about the affair, it was more about it being a superior having sexual relations with a subordinate. The power that Clinton had, not only as President, but as the "boss" of Lewinsky, he had power over her with regards to her job and could use that he well pleased

I’d take one of the more dubious entries and replace it with Jimmy Carter wnd the hostage crisis where Iran took several Americans as hostages whom were not released until barely after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. As an aside, it was a situation that saw NBC create their now famous news show _Nightline_ , originally hosted by Ted Koppel, it gave nightly updates on the ordeal.

It would be nice to get someone who was around at the time to do a commentary about it. There's another similar cool video by a Spanish vlogger who vlogged himself on top of the World Trade Center before it was destroyed. Super HD footage. That one's called "SUBIMOS a las TORRES GEMELAS 3 meses antes del 11 SEPT"

I agree with you about this top being more about bad decisions rather than embarrassing moments. In my opinion, a top of shameful moments would be things presidents did or said while in office or former presidents, since not everything they do affects the country. In this top, most positions are bad decisions, the first thing you would feel is not shame, as they are things that were approved and were effected, having hindsight also adds up to having a wide range on what to feel about those decisions. I also agree with your opinion that the impeachment of a president will unfortunately from now on have to do with personal things instead of things that have to do with his administration. Greetings from Argentina!

For LBJ, the embarrassing thing is how he reacted to contrary views on Vietnam. When House Minority Leader Gerald Ford criticized LBJ’s handling of the Vietnam War. Ford questioned whether the White House had a clear plan to bring the war to a successful conclusion. The speech angered LBJ, who responded like an infant by accusing Ford of playing “too much football without a helmet.” But you can also go him pushing for the Kerner Commission and then ignoring all the conclusions.

I was also in D.C. when the U.S. invaded Iraq, attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law as a sophomore in high school. I distinctly remember watching the news on CNN and seeing a TV ad announcing the release of Linkin Park's second studio album in under a week. I also remember visiting both sides of the Capitol building and talking to protestors on the Mall, trying to understand why there was such rabid opposition to what seemed like the obvious next step in the Global War on Terror. There was a lot the average American didn't know and couldn't see coming as a result of that decision.

Speaking of the CIA, my understanding is that a big reason we were willing to escalate our involvement in Vietnam was because of a incredibly favorable and incredibly inaccurate estimate the CIA had made of Viet Cong manpower. Sam Adam's "War of Numbers" goes into more detail but essentially the US strategists were giving the false belief that the Viet Cong weren't replacing men killed or who deserted at a rate high enough to sustain their numbers and that the organization was headed towards collapse, when this couldn't have been farther from the truth.
