Legend has it that Vlad III was so feared that, after he took the throne for the second time in 1456, he had a golden cup placed on a fountain in the central square of Târgoviste, leaving it unguarded and unprotected. While he reigned, the cup was never touched, for the people feared Vlad and knew the punishment for thieves was public impalement. Some of the accounts (translated from Romanian, so there may be linguistic drift) say that one day, the cup was stolen, and on that day everyone knew that Vlad Dracula was dead.

I've usually heard Wallachia pronounced with a "v" in English, so it is a bit unusual to hear it pronounced with a "u" sound. In Romanian it would be pronounced Va-la-hee-ah (Valahia). It's important to mention that Wallachia/Wallachian is an exonym (as in a name used by foreigners for a place). While it was used locally to some extent (as in Ungro-Vlahia), it wasn't a name commonly used by the people. The origin of the name is supposedly from an old Germanic word used to describe romanised Celts or romance language speakers. Wallachia would thus be related linguistically to Walloon and Wales. The name used by Romanians at the time was Țeara (from the Latin Terra) Rumânească or Țara Românească in modern Romanian. Literally The Romanian Land. It's worth noting that Wallachia was made up of two major regions: the Western part was Oltenia (the land of Olt, a major river) and the Eastern part was Muntenia (the land of Mountains). Locals to this day are described as "olteni" or "munteni" and that would've also been the case back then. However they also would've called themselves Romanians. Just as today. While the concept of ethnicity was not exactly what it is now, there are multiple accounts of travellers, merchants or diplomats reporting in their journals that locals called themselves "rumâni", that they considered themselves descendents of the Romans and that their language possessed some familiarity with Latin. One Italian traveller notes "Valachi nunc se Romanos vocant" or the Wallachians are calling themselves Roman now. It would've been the same in Moldavia, as one of their chroniclers - Grigore Ureche - proudly proclaimed in his work on the history of Moldavia "de la Rîm ne tragem"; an old Romanian way of saying "we are descended from Rome". I find this sort of linguistic trivia fascinating and I hope someone else does too.

For those who are wondering what does Wallachia means : it is a generic germanic word for every group of people who spoke latin. Wallachia is not the only part in the world that shares this etimology : for stance, the polish word for Italy is "Wlochy" and the half of Belgium that speaks french is called Wallonie.

While Vlad the Impaler gets the headlines for his brutality, Micheal actually defeated the Ottomans in a large scale battle and even briefly United Romania under his rule.

One of my favourite stories about Vlad involved a rich merchant and a poor man. The Merchant lost his purse of money and offered a significant reward for its return. The poor man found it and when realising that it was the Merchant's purse, he returned it (no doubt he was scared to just keep it given Vlad's reputation). But the Merchant didn't want to pay the reward so told the poor man that he must have taken his reward already. The poor man was so incensed at the accusation that he took it before Vlad to complain. Vlad questioned the Merchant and the Merchant claimed there was a different amount of money in the purse he was given compared to the one he lost, probably thinking that Vlad would side with him. Instead Vlad took the purse and said that it can't be the Merchant's then if the amount of money inside was different. He then said that because nobody had claimed THIS purse missing, that it belonged to the finder: the poor man. So because the Merchant was a douche, he lost all that money. There's no way of knowing if it's true but it's an entertaining story.

Yeah, interesting that Nelson got practically immortalized for one battle, while Cochrane is practically unknown despite leading 4 countries worth of navies and sinking more ships than basically anyone in history (the only one with similar track record is probably korean Admiral Yi) - and being instrumental in helping at least 2 countries gain independence from their respective empires (Chile from the Spanish and Brazil from the Portugal). I imagine, if he wasn't such an ethical dude and had a bit more ambition, he could create an empire of his own. I mean, if someone treated me as the British treated him, I'd fcking join Napoleon instead. Maybe we'd all be speaking french by now if Cochrane snapped one day, back then.

The Transsylavian "Saxons" actually weren't from Lower Saxony (the region where the Anglo-Saxons came from) nor were they from (Upper) Saxony. The name was a cultural-linguistic misunderstanding. The german colonists that made up the Transsylvanian Saxons came from all parts of medieval Germany. (Btw., the german name of Brasov was Kronstadt) :)

IIRC, the Saxons who invaded Britannia came from neither Saxony nor Lower Saxony, but rather from what is today Schleswig-Holstein and southern Jutland! They were called Saxons because the Latin scholars of the time got the different Germanic tribes mixed up!

I think there's another show that had an episode that focused a lot more on the castles and fortresses he had built, while also going over his history. We can never be 100% sure if what's written in historical texts is actually authentic and have to do a lot of guesswork and archeology to see what claims hold water. 8:27 In Extra History's "Vlad the Impaler - LiES" bonus segment they cover the decision regarding the pronounciation of Wallachia. They actually did the "Vah-lahk-iya" pronunciation for a while, but had doubts because so many of English sources said "Wa-lake-iya". As a Romanian speaker myself, "Vah-lahk-iya" is closer to the Romanian version, but the term is an exonym so it would make more sense to study the foreign pronunciation at the time. Some people might also point out that the "Brasov" and "Targoviste" inflection is different from what you'd hear in their modern pronunciation, but I am detecting some elements of Hungarian musicality in the way they are pronounced in the video, which would make sense if we think about the time in history.

8: 25 Well, they try to pronounce the names of people and towns in the way they should be pronounced in the original languages but when it comes to countries things get quite different for a reason. Most languages have their own names for a lot of foreign countries. E.g.: My home country is Österreich but in English it's called "Austria", in French "Autriche", in Dutch "Oostenrijk", in Hawaiian " 'Aukekulia" and so on. In German we don't say "Hellas", "United States" or "France" either but "Griechenland", "Vereinigte Staaten" and "Frankreich". By the way the Romanian name for Wallachia is "Valahia". 🙂

Impaling wasn't really a twist on crucifixion. Crucifixion looked more like this before the Roman's use of the cross. Looking at the book of Esther, you can see them building a gallows. That wasn't the hang from the neck gallows that we are familiar with. It was a place where a tall pole would be placed to stand in the air after someone was run through with it. So this impaling was pretty much the original crucifixion.

If there's one (of many) thing(s) I've learned from this channel, it's that fear works until it works too well. Getting your subjects to obey you through fear mostly involves the threat of death if you displease or work against them. Then, at some point, they go off the deep end. At that point, you evaluate things and come to the conclusion "If they stay here, we're all going to die. But if we can overthrow them, yes, many of us will die, but more of us will survive in the long term." And that's the moment the leader who rules by fear comes to fear their subjects.

Within some languages a word derived from 'Sachsen' or 'Saxons' just became the word for Germans. So the 'Siebenbürger'/'Transsylvanian' Sachsen stand just for people from somewhere in Germany, not for Lower Saxons like in Old Saxons. (The Margraviat of Meißen and some other principalities around it were called (Upper) Saxony after their ruler, who also wore the title Duke of Saxony.)

This is the first video "essay" on YT about Vlad Tepes that is historically accurate (for the most part) and you're the only channel i've seen that actually has intelligent commentary and doesn't just go with the cliche "bloodthirsty vampire" (mainly because you actually know history and how these things work). Just wanna add 1 thing as an interesting tid bit that you don't see mentioned almost anywhere: the spikes where NOT sharpened. In any video on the topic you see the pikes sharp at the end, but they were made dull on purpose so they don't pierce so fast through the body, this practice made it so the people impaled would die in a matter of hours up to 2 days. Also, his name "Țepeș" was a nickname given to him by the people as "țeapă" means "pike" (but this is in modern day romanian so idk if this is a nickname given to him by people in modern days or it was actually the case back then). DK if you still read comments on old videos, but I'll leave it for the algo

In regards to the correct pronunciation of Wallachia, it's a bit complicated since Romania mainly uses a different term, "Țara Românească" (literally meaning "Romanian Country"). The word "Wallachia" came from the words "Valah" or "Vlach" which were words used by outsiders, particularly germans, to refer to romanians at the time. As for how the (albeit underused) word is pronounced in Romanian, you are definitely closer with the beginning 'v', although the name doesn't contain a 'c'. It's 'Valahia'. I like that you know the pronounciancion of words when talking about many a foreign country. It shows respect for the countries! You are right - the correct way to say it is Valahia - Vah-lah-he-ah (dunno the phonetic alphabet to right it like that so I hope this make sense) :D

I shall contribute as the guidance for how to pronounce Wallachia in a appropriated way unbeknownst to you I originated from Hencida, Hungary (roughly twenty kilometres from the border of Romania) we would pronounce Wallachia as Walla-shee-a instead of the English pronunciation.

9:00 Not sure how you'd say it in English, but in Romanian it's "Valahia", pronounced the same way it's spelled.
@adamlatosinski5475

If I'm not mistaken, "Wallachia" is an exonym (coming from the same root as "Wales"), not used by most of the Romanian themselves. Therefore I feel it's fine using the English pronunciation. Some Romanian text adopted this name and then they write it as "Valahia" or "Vlahia". We should remember however than in old Latin alphabet there was no distinction between U and V, so it's still not clear to me how they would pronounce it.

I think the difference is that notable locations have accepted pronunciations in English that may or may not be the same as those in the local language, whereas the names of things like small towns do not.

6:49 yes, but at the same time the Tudors were very much favourable to Edward. Was that because Henry was married to his daughter of because they couldn’t actually deny him since he was actually really beloved by the people themselves?

Wallachia is an exonym . The romanian name is Tara Românească meaning Romanian county/country/land .Valahia can be still used as a word but it's rather odd . Pronunciation would be like V(Very)A(Alert)L(London)A(Alert)H(Hotel)I(Indoor)A(Alert).

Much information about Vlad's cruelty was spread by his direct enemies, such as the rulers of Brașov, and could be exaggerated. I read that he did not impale the nobles, but used the usual methods of execution of his time. Great comments!

Ironically, the ancestors of the Transylvanian Saxons weren't actually Saxons, they came from what is today in the West of Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Northeastern France, as well Southern and Central Germany, but not actually from Upper or Lower Saxony.

One reason is that the name wallachia derives from old germanic, slavic or even from gothic word walhaz, wolka, walhs or many more other derivatives witch mean romance speaking people......that`s how the germanic and slavic tribes could refer to the latins in the region of this part of Europe But pronunciation is with ,,v`` because this is how the germans and slavs could pronounce the ,,w`` in thier worlds.....maybe mostly germans

Valahia without any 'k'. Within the Romanian language 'h' is pronounced like 'ch' in the german word 'Loch' or like 'h' in 'hound'. I can't remember, which one is used in the case of 'Valahia'. In modern Romanian it is called "principatul Țării Românești".

I am laaate!! So basically both Vahalia (your pronunciation) and Wallachia (EC pronunciation) are correct. Valahia is the local name and variation, while Wallachia is an "westernisation" of it. It is the same thing with Ion and John, one is the local word, the other the international translation. I do remember we had a few senteces on the etimology of the word back in the 8th and the 12 grade while learning that part in our history, but for the life of me i don't actually remember the content. Also, unfortunately, i can't find my 8th grade History textbook :(

Even considering the brutality standards of medieval Europe, I think it's fair to say that Vlad Dracula was a psychopath and probably a sadist. There are a few individuals in medieval history that would be considered serial killers or brutal psychopaths, like the infamous Elizabeth Báthory or the monstrous Gilles de Rais - probably the two worst serial killers in world history. I think it could be argued that Vlad falls in this category too.
