Teachers follow a pay scale, so you get a raise pretty much every year you work. So that’s a huge plus! Summers off, vacations, holidays, snow days etc. In Massachusetts we only work 180 days out of the year. So think about that when looking at a salary that may seem very low and scary at first. I’m a teacher and have a child, and I am so lucky to be home with everyday at 3, and spend summers off with him. It’s so true what you said, as long as you budget and prepare, you can totally make it work!
@mariaravelli85446 жыл бұрын
Vanessa's Voice So I am a Behavioral Specialist for a public school, not a licensed teacher. I follow a different pay scale than teachers. But if you look up whatever district/town you’re interested in working in its all online on their towns website, for a public school. I think the average starting teacher is probably around 35k

I always wonder, as a female teacher, in a female dominated occupation, if part of the reason teachers aren’t paid well is because women are notoriously not paid equally, nor do we often ask for raises. I just don’t know where this low pay comes from.
@Sopher61256 жыл бұрын
PetitChouPumpkin I personally think that is a huge part of it! There’s a great article a male teacher wrote talking all about this. I’ll link it if I can find it.

I’ve honestly never thought of it that way but it makes so much sense. There’s simply no logical reason anymore for paying teachers low salaries, and it shouldn’t be a huge fight every time it’s brought up. So why is it?
@mariaravelli85446 жыл бұрын
Wow great point. Especially when considering that higher education professors (colleges, universities etc) are paid well, and coincidentally more male dominated. Both require a masters degree (although in lower Ed you have a few years before a Masters is necessary for your license, i believe) Interesting observation!

I was in a school shooting at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, FL. It was the most terrifying day of my life. A couple years later I developed PTSD and switched to FLVS. Honestly, the teachers there impacted my life in such a beautiful way. They were invested in me and had so much love for their jobs. I was able to recover, discover myself, and find my faith. I was able to walk the stage and get my high school diploma in 2016. It was an emotional moment. I never thought I would ever be able to go into a classroom again. But, I made it to UNF and was able to succeed in my classes. I know your story, and want to say you are a beautiful inspiration as a young woman. You are strong, funny, and oh so unbreakable. 💪🏻 From one Floridian to another, I wish you nothing but the absolute best in your teaching career. ❤️

When you said "you're saying that parents or people in your life are directing you away from teaching because they're scaring you about what teachers make" I felt that. My dad has always told me "you're not going to be a teacher you're going to be a doctor because they make good money" but what he doesn't understand is that being a doctor takes a lot of time of your life & a lot of money goes into that in itself and truly I'd never be happy. I have wanted to be a teacher my whole life, just this year I got my childcare credentials and he said "wow you're really going through with this" like yeah, I am. I always tell people "if I was in it for the money I wouldn't be doing it" because it's true. I'm really good with my money when I need to be. He thinks I'm like him, he thinks I'd waste my money on things I don't need then complain about not having enough but I have been planning my budget since I started high school. Save my 100's and try to drag out my 5's, 10's, 20's, 50's.... the first thing I did was take a personal finance class when I started high school. Ever since I knew exactly what I wanted to teach and what grade I began intense research on what I would be making and how I needed to go about saving and investing my money so I never am living off of a paycheck every month and I always have something a little extra.

Honestly we have never struggled, but we also live within my means! The best advice I got on finances in school was "live like you are a college student until you are out of debt. This means I still go out to eat but I don't order the most expensive thing on the menu. I live in an apartment that is not downtown to save money. By following this advise we have been free to save a lot for a downpayment and pay off debt! All this to say: Teacher pay is more than doable! Well worth the "little" pay to get to teach!

Hi vanessa, I just passed the CBEST 3 months ago and what helped me was studying key words and vocabulary words for the comprehension portion of the exam. Then for the writing portion I studied the official CBEST writing samples they have on the site.

@@qtdeshina Thank you I was wondering if you had any websites you might have used or any books that helped you?

I just came across your channel and I'M SO GLAD I DID! I've never watched videos with such a positive response! Your positivity and happiness are contagious, keep on being like that :) I wish my teachers had a mood as good as yours :p Xoxo from Portugal

This was so interesting! Where I live in Canada it requires 6 years university to become a junior high or highchool teacher, 4 years for primary/elementary.

How does it work during the summer? Do you still get paid your salary? Or does it change?

Depending on your state and district you can choose if you want to be paid year round or have larger paychecks that cover you during the school year
