Felipe Costa in its hay-day The Ben Heck Show was a great place to learn about electronics and to see cool projects being put together, and overall I enjoyed it very much. But this past year it has been filled with more of a "let's become a business" mindset instead of "let's hack together a cool prototype/project" this shift has had a big impact on their viewer base and many people including me were disappoint with the result. I hope that The Ben Heck Show will be able to swing back around to more interesting content but for now it doesn't seem likely.

This build is really well done! I wanted to look into doing this myself, but I shouldn't have been surprised that its been done many times. Personally, your build is my favorite, even over the all in 1 PCB. I may wind up making one of these one day, but right now I'm backlogged with other too many other portables. Thanks for the great video! Keep up the good work!

Is that a feature that could be emulated? Could one use some storage on the MicroSD for an emulated storage device compatible with the pinout and protocol of the Dreamcast? Maybe an Arduino clone could be used to save RPi GPIO pins by acting as a sort of buffer and serial interface for the VMU to the RPi running software that emulates the screen and memory management of the VMU.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 6 жыл бұрын
RPI has enough GPIO pins, only a handful of pins are actually in use on the connector. It's using the same Maple bus that the controller connects to, the controller contains a hub. The interface should be possible to emulate using just a kernel driver, no additional hardware needed. That is, i understand, with the purpose of emulating the original VMU functionality on the modified VMU - savegame storage, controller LCD, VMU minigame emulation - we can skip direct transfer from one VMU to another, because let's face it, when are you going to ever run into another person with a VMU hanging around their neck, especially one with a Linux single-board computer inside? Unfortunately some games crash with cards that have more than 100KB of storage space, and i really doubt more than 128KB would work just about anywhere, but perhaps there's an elegant solution to extend the useful space. Many games have unique VMU splash screens, so you could make the VMU swap card images automatically depending on the first unique LCD write after the reset operation, so essentially most games would have a virtual memory card of their own.

@agonleed3841
@agonleed3841 6 жыл бұрын
saito9099 you make no sense The screen was ALREADY used. So it's not Too small to be usable. Cause we used it. We actively used the little screen thingy lmao. He even showed how we used it. And explained why he tore it apart. Cause it wasn't as great as it should've been then. What he did, is the idea they had then. But they didn't have the technology. To download, upload, etc etc. Basically they created the idea we use now in cellphones. They did it with a sort of two way that only worked in short range as well. They were truly ahead of their time.

The technology was there to make those things better in the old days. The VMU was just a shite design is all. Look at the size of it. They could have put a way bigger screen the entire length of it on that, all along the back. Then make the dreamcast controller "gap" bigger to fit it. Way more pixels would have been cool, and a better little CPU. Stacking them like that could have made for a mono "sort of" nintendo DS system with two screens. Like a game-and-watch but not crap. As an aside, I think it is a pity you destroyed that VMU, even if I do think a VMU is a flawed device. I'm not nagging you. You can do what you like with your stuff. Just saying, you could have sent off to get a PCB made (a whole stack costing 20 pennies each), or you could have etched your own one at home using light transfer method or printer method. But basically you'd surely just send off for them to get a stack done for 20 pennies each.

Why. The VMU is way too small to do anything, yet you went and stripped apart one and stuffed a raspberry pi inside one. Don't cannibalize oçd hardware, it's pointless, just print a new case or something. There's already hundreds of these retropie projects, this isn't even new, just stop doing this shit.

now, i want to see a Duke/original xbox controller turned into a plug and play console using a pie...... i was thinking... it could even have a screen where the X logo is, and replace the useless memory carts with batteries in the same housings/connectors, could even cut small micro usb ports in each battery for a charge port...or just set it up such that the whole thing could be charged off usb, i was considering something similar to this www.amazon.com/MT-Smallest-Lightest-Capacity-Charging/dp/B07FTLX34J/ref=sr_1_90 for a project a friend of mine was asking my help with... was thinking of building it so that we could just plugin one of those to charge/power it, and swap them out as they needed a charge, (just an example, we have some others that may serve better depending on what case/housing he settles on) he wants to build a mobile gaming system thats got a screen built in, and can run for more then a few hours at a time, but thats also not huge and clunky, i talked him down to 7" screen, he has a source for a "next gen" TN panel that, and i have seen these first hand, are easily as good as cheaper ips pannels, both viewing angle and color reproduction(true 10bit, not 8bit with afr...), honestly i was blown away by the demo screens i tested, they even had one that was an optical touch screen, that was great....accurate no matter what or how you touched it... hes trying to decide if he want to go with a PI style board or just go silly and build something thats gonna need a bit more juice using a panda board, (or similar he actually has a few last gen boards, he is considering a current gen board from a few of these companies, hes even contacted one asking about a couple products they have on their site but arent selling yet, and if they would be suitable to the project, and, one of the companies, was quite interested in the idea... wonder if i could cram a full on PI into a duke if the card slots where removed.... that could be interesting, usb, nic, hdmi, all on the back of a duke... with the controller wired up internally, always connected.... that could be fun.... and a fun project...

You can reconfigure TP4056 charger boards, the cheapy ones, to any current you like, by replacing one resistor. Want help figuring out which one it is and which values you need?

Funny but so impractical lol. I like seeing people make tiny consoles even though I would never want to use them myself. The tiny screen and my little hands all bunched up to hold it. No thanks xD Funny though.

If you wanted to. you could make some good money off of this, especially with alot of Dreamcast fans. (Myself included) I would have loved to seen some Mame Gameplay of MvC though but wow. I would totally kill for one of these.
