First, I KNOW they released another single since Get In The Ring. But it wasn't out at the time of filming this video! Anyways, Amon Amarth has been a staple of metal since I was in high school. Maybe even earlier. Johan Hegg has some of the most iconic low and mid growls in the entire genre, and I LOVED listening to them and picking them apart! Lets hang out while I react to and analyze "Amon Amarth - Get In The Ring"!

What’s always impressed me with Johan is how clearly he enunciates words while going as low as he does. I never feel like he’s doing a bunch of filler noise, I know I can eventually learn the lyrics if I listen enough.

You're absolutely right. My dad discovered Amon Amarth in his 60s and that was a big reason that he loved them so much, because it was the first band with that type of vocal that he could clearly understand.

First off, you’re the man Mark! Iv been watching since day one and it inspired me to learn harsh vocals. Maybe I’m the minority but I would love to see a return to a focus on deathcore. Keep on keepin on!

Johan definitely helped me get into metal/music with harsh vocals to begin with. Mainly because of how easy it is to understand him generally. Definitely used to think harsh vocals were kind of silly when i was younger, (like a child more) and then hearing Twilight of the Thunder God for the first time while playing Skyrim as an Orc "Barbarian" was awesome. lol I vividly remember doing the quest to get Volendrung with it in the background. And then it was an epic match up with Guardians of Asgaard when I first got to Sovngarde for the first time. Good memories.

The air flow actually the same like when we're talking compare to the common growl I've ever heard. the technique also doesn't requires you to aim your mouth forward like a kiss (I don't know what to call it in english but I hope you get that). mostly only your lower mouth+jaw go forward. the good thing is you can literally talk with that technique

I did a vocal cover on this one and my best description to the technique I used is: A constant throat clearing base/fundamental (like you are trying to get rid of a slimy throat after a nice meal, but with more air) - from there you only use mouth shaping and pay attention to the phrasing Johan uses. The throat is very relaxed the whole time, it's quiet compared to normal speaking. It can be louder than speaking, but it doesn't need to for recording. "Don't tense up." Is the tip Johan Hegg gave me, when I got the chance to meet him and have a little talk.

Might be time to take a look at a really unique blend of harsh and clean vocals, in the band Eluveitie (Helvetie). They have an excellent new single called Aidus out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ-plGCliJyXrJI There's never been a more in depth reaction to Chrigel's screams, a very different version of old school screams than Johan's. Mark, if you're not familiar with this, it's gonna be a load of fun...

I love me some blueberry pancakes in my metal! As always, a great vocal technique breakdown to a great track. This new record seems to be a 'return to form' so to speak, because the last albums were quite different from the 'normal' Amon Amarth sound (which I still love). What I love as well, is the new Kardashev album. I wanted to get to Kardashev for a while now, but I always forgot, for whatever reason. 🤣 It's one of the albums that, when I listen to it, darken the room I'm in, turn off all distractions, close my eyes and listen to it from start to finish in one go, without even a small break. Atmosphere, composition, your vocals, everything mixes into an amazing journey. Thank you and the guys so much for this outstanding work. Just needed to tell this right now. 😄
