VoicePlay not only has had a knack for creating utterly amazing compositions to some pretty nerdy stuff, but sometimes they create an all vocal arrangement of classic takes that just knock my socks off. This one in particular, which I have some operatic experience with in my past, has left me literally stunned. And of course, I had to come in character. ;-)
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay performing "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" for the first time.

Elizabeth, this piece is so insanely good. Voiceplay always does great stuff, but this is next-level good on a technical level. The amount of varying vocal techniques, chord structures, vocal acting.. this is damn near a masterclass on vocal theater.

Amazing how few people know Savatage, but just how many know the works of their later musical creation, The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Got to talk to Jon Oliva briefly before their performance at the original Hammerjacks in Baltimore back in the late 80's. Been a wild ride for those guys over the years.

Saw voiceplay's video and started watching it, then saw this video at the top of the list on the side, and immediately thought "How did this video premier 30 minutes after the music video premiered?!" Given that it's 25 minutes long, that would have been crazy to get the files uploaded to youtube that quick. Then you say you got early access, and its nice to see how the barrier between the artists and the listeners are broken down when it comes to voiceplay, and how much they must have enjoyed your reactions to their videos.

I am always amazed at how they are constantly outdoing themselves. I was NOT prepared for this song!!! the sheer creativity! it's as if they listened to a piece of music and debated among themselves, "What story can we tell with this? How far can we take it, how much can we play with it?" I have listened to this song dozens of times now, sometimes multiple times per day, and I am full-on addicted to this.

Fantastic reaction and I learned a lot! I also learned a lot from the heads up that Geoff gave on the Patreon page. There is a YT channel called Classics Explained that tells the story of this musical piece. I’ve heard this music all my life but never knew the story behind it. It did help me figure out what the heck was going on. I was so confused! Entertained and impressed, but confused. Your perspective as an opera singer and vocal coach just added that much more richness to the piece for me. I have watched this countless times. In addition to the amazing music and the crazy make up, props have to go out to Layne for not only arranging this, but dragging in those trees to appear in the foreground. Apparently he went out and cut them down.🪚 But also props to Eli for the lighting. Especially the end when they all disappear. Each character has their own color. It may seem like a really minor thing, but to those of us who learn visually it’s just the icing on the cake.
@havtor007

What is going on is that the human in the story is walked in on the trolls (Norwegian trolls is of many kinds) and the song is them talking about how they will murder and eat them. Not really hard to find out as there literally is a theater piece this comes from called Peer Gynt where this music is specifically made for.

I am so happy to see this-I worried that now that they’re back to doing live gigs, they were going to stop putting as much into videos (the last couple releases were great, but not the huge cosplay kind of thing we’ve seen so much of-which is a big part of what I love about them. It’s nice to know they’ll still go all out for those of us who can only watch on video. The other thing I just love about this is that we’re hearing things from every one of these guys that we’ve never heard before-who knew Eli could growl like that, or that Cesar could make all those wild sounds, or that Layne could not just sing, but sing in so many different voices, or that Geoff could make that lovely classical sound (gah-I want MORE of that! 🥰). I checked out Liz’s TikTok since I’d never heard of her and so I came in knowing she had a great voice, but OMG. More of her, too, please! Loved this reaction-your giggles are priceless! (BTW, surely what we’re hearing was sung in studio, without all the makeup, but I’d love to hear what it sounded like on the set when they were doing the video-you’re probably right that the prosthetics made for quite a different listening experience.)

Well, now you just have to do a breakdown of Savatage's version! Such a fantastic piece of music though - when you're starting with something that good, and add the ridiculous amount of talent these guys have, the end result is always going to be spectacular.

I was in band in high school and we did the whole Peer Gynt Suite but I loved this one. I was fortunate enough to be first chair in the bass clarinet section so I got use the contrabass clarinet with incredibly deep notes. The tune stayed with me my whole life and this was icing on the cake. This video will reappear for me every time I hear it again. Of course I get to see all my reactors first impressions which is kind of like going to a beautiful park, Grand Canyon perhaps, with a friend who had never been there before. Like seeing it with new eyes and in this case new ears. Thanks for doing this one - I love your analyses and the laughter and joy it can summon. You made my day. By the way, my habit is to first listen to Geoff or VoicePlay for the perfect run through before going to my reactors. One of my favorites you did was Halo with Marty O'Donnell. That was terrific.

I fell in love with this channel all the way back with the disturbed sound of silence reaction and this video reminds me why. Anyone can give entertaining or informative reactions there are hundreds of channels, but this one stands above all. Seeing the pure joy and childlike glee on Elizabeth's face while simultaneously seeing the wheels turn as she's breaking down exactly what's happening will never get old.

Laine's accent when "drunk" sounds like the English Somerset accent, recognised for brewing Apple cider... If that's what it is then it's appreciated here in the uk!

Seeing as my earliest exposure to, and appreciation of, operatic music came to me by way of Warner Bros. cartoons, this piece was right up my alley. Loved every minute of it! Smashing horns by the way.

When thinking about storytelling in a capella versions of instrumental music, the first videos that came to my mind where Libertango by the Swingles and the Root Beer Rag by the Wise Guys. But now, I have to extend this list, and Voiceplay might even take the top spot.

Thanks for your great video! I love just how much fun you have, and I'm very grateful for your analysis. I have learnt so much from you. Layne has a carrot in many of their videos. I think it started on their Frozen Medley, but he had it in their Movie Themes Medley, too, and several others.

#TheCharismaticVoice I just love you excitement to all different types of music (well, these acapellas are my favorite 😉). Those little details how to do different sounds are make put so much self-esteem to myself (well, i have played over 30 years guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele etc... but i have never sing even in elementary school) so i bought private singing lessons from professional singing teacher over a year ago. Now i can sing some simple songs but i´m getting better every month. This is all because of your happy and inspiring videos which proof that you don`t have to born with perfect voice, you need just to work it out no matter how hard that sometimes is 😇 Thank You and keep uploading these videos as often as possible 🙏
