Oh yeah, that's a nice point. I saw them once, in summer 2019, during the Simulation Theory world tour. And what can I say, I did expect the audience to be some 18 y/o dudes and girls, some 90's kids, maybe some metalheads too, but no no no - there was everybody. All the aforementioned? Check. 15 y/olds? Check. Actual elders? Check. A LOT of just middle-aged people? Check. Crazy metalheads, punks, emos? Check. Very classy, well-dressed people? Check. So incredible to be somehow melding all these different humans as your fanbase. Muse does truly amaze!

Muse is a great band. Talented musicians who aren’t afraid to mess around with their sound. This new song is an awesome mix of a pop, almost dubstep, sound on the verses with the amazing metal sound that comes in for the chorus. The transitions between the two different sounds is perfect. The “won’t stand down” metal scream near and at the end reminded me a lot of Randy Blythe from Lamb of God, only in a somewhat higher register.

Can we just appreciate the fact that Muse did a breakdown in their song and came back to their roots? Great song and reaction!
@Rhythmic12742 жыл бұрын
Nothing about the breakdown has anything to do with their roots. I can't think of anything from Showbiz, OOS, or even Absolution that's remotely close to this. You could argue about the drop tuning of Citizen Erased, but it's just not the same. The closest it would come to that era would be the interlude on Citizen Erased from the 2004 era, for example Glastonbury.
@richardsinclair76612 жыл бұрын
What the dude above me said. The guitar riff right before the chorus definitely reminds me of something Muse would write when they were more guitar-centric (I don't say heavy because they weren't heavy, really. They just had crunchy tuning), but the breakdown is entirely new.

It's interesting that you count it like that, with the bar of 5/4, because I count the entire song in 4/4 with the 1 falling on a different beat haha! During the verse I have the big bass wahs on 4 and 1, rather than on 1 and 2 like you were counting them. Really cool arranging anyway! And the big shift between the verses and the chorus (if no one else has pointed it out) is that the verses are triplet based (12/8) and the choruses are 16th note based (straight 4/4). I like the fact that they ditch the subdivisions to make that transition from vs to ch.

Not only is the musicianship of Muse incredibly impressive (including Matt's vocals) their lyrical Content is some of the most relevant and truthful you will find. They've been trying to send a message for years and unfortunately (i.e. The Resistance, Drones, Simulation Theory) alot of it is still falling on deaf ears, no pun Intended. It's not just art, and it's definetley not fantasy, but no body wants to admit they've been fooled, and no one wants their "reality" shaken up by frightening truths. @@goldenhate6649 not just anti-establishment but there's been a growing overreach from those in power for the last 20 years. We could have a whole debate about the subject but I think what I might say would possibly be misconstrued or misinterpreted I'll simply suggest anyone who reads this watch the 1976 movie Network, and legitimately look into the concepts that MUSE bring up, esp those regarding simulation. And i 100% agree. Pleasantly surprised about that, I heard it was gonna be heavy but this is a side to MUSE we haven't seen since Absolution/Black Holes and Revalations... even then this is much angrier and more along the lines of having metal influence. I love it! Elizabeth's mention of dubstep elements was spot on as well. We are seeing a very matured, and polished version of MUSE with this project

I really hate how bad their lyrics are nowadays... They used to have such beautiful lyrics but now everything is so awkward and over the top without any nuance. I'm still a little traumatized from "cold chick, you ate my soul like a death eater" and Propaganda in general, just to mention one. What happened to things like Hoodoo? Those are some of my favourite lyrics ever. Especially "and I've had recurring nightmares that I was loved for who I am and missed the opportunity to be a better man"
@BuddhaDog932 жыл бұрын
@@chaotictuc I get where you're coming from but Won't Stand Down and Propaganda don't even compare. Matt could've been a bit more clever here, as the repetition isn't all that catchy, but Propaganda is easily one of their worst songs. If I could raise this thought as well: How many albums/songs do they have? There's only so many times you can keep saying the same messages in different ways. I'm not even the biggest MUSE fan, just like music in general but even their worst songs trump most "relevant" musicians' (if many mainstream artists can even be considered such) best songs.
@chaotictuc2 жыл бұрын
@@BuddhaDog93 I mean, I really like Won't Stand Down but I just kinda have to try my best to ignore the lyrics because they're so awkwardly worded I can't enjoy the song if I pay attention to them haha I'm also aware that it's personal preference. I just happen to be a big fan of pretty words, even some vague meanings. But I do think there are ways to make these "really spelling it out for you" lyrics a little less clumsy with a little effort. Elizabeth, I love you! Though, I must bring to your attention that this song is entirely in 4/4; your '1' count comes in early on the '4' of the prior measure, giving your phrasing a bit of unbalance. Absolutely love your take on Matt's vocal specificity. Muse is my favorite band of all time, and watching you (as a fellow Muse fan) nerd out over his style after all these years brings me so much joy. You may not have heard any tracks from their Drones album, but I really enjoy the meaning behind "The Globalist", where Matt sings in such a fabulous, yet morose way in order to capture the lyrics and mood of the song. It's a long one, but give it a listen!

Agree on the 4/4, was going to comment before I saw yours :) You can hear her counting 4 on the snare while that should be 3

From both the lyrics and the video, there is a clear theme. Control. Knowing this man has control over the masses, it isn't something this mysterious group could overlook. Lyrics themselves are talking about an abusive relationship of sorts. This is about breaking away from it. 'You Make Me Feel like it's Halloween' feels tied in, considering the lyrical content. This is further back up, cause the same man in the chair is present in that video as well.

Matt’s a powerhouse. The guy uses his head voice like no other. The distorted voice in the breakdown is kind of a Muse signature as well as some arpeggiators. He does it as well in Supermassive Black Hole and Break It To Me. Glad you recognize his abilities. Cheers.

@fo4music2 жыл бұрын
Love your analysis of this and I recently subscribed - the live Muse experience is reflected in this video -- larger than life, and I love that my kids all love them -- I'll always see Muse as one of the most powerful and multi-faceted bands out there where each musician can arguably be seen as the best or towards the top of the heap at their respective crafts. Amazing musicians. Additionally a great clip showing the energy of a live Muse experience is their closing song, Stockholm Syndrome, during the 2004 Glastonbury Festival -- an infamous performance that was so intense and passionate that after watching it, the drummer, Dominic's, father died of a heart attack.

Great reaction, and excellent analysis. But that "bar of 5/4" doesn't exist. You started counting by placing the 1 on the 4. The verses have the snare hitting on beat 3, not beat 4, for a half-time feel. The bass throughout the verse hits on beats 4 & 1 of every other measure. Love your content, though. Keep it up!

This is one of the things I really appreciate about Elizabeth's work here; she's got wide-ranging musical interests, and it's fun to watch her grow. She's now a Floor fan, and I'm now a Muse fan. All good, win-win. Thanks again for all your efforts, Elizabeth. 🤘😛🤘

I love that muse have always moved with there style but ALWAYS had the muse sound, Sure it turns some people off when they move away from the bit they like ( angry guitars moving into more dub step style beats etc) but they have always been experimental, Matt’s guitar had a sample pad on it before most people. They are almost clinical in there arrangements and sound which is awesome but songs like this make me long for a live show where they can play and really let loose on the guitars etc, something they can’t really do on record. As for there live show, muse is one of very few bands that I REALLY enjoy live and sometimes prefer live, they are so creative with there sets and lighting and love to put on a show. Something a few bands are lacking in nowadays

As a long time fan, Muse's last couple of albums have left me cold. They really didn't gel with me at all. It's OK it happens when bands go in different musical directions, but this track has given me hope again. I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys live twice (Black Holes and Revelations and The Resistance Tours) and they were spectacular. Elizabeth if you ever do another Muse song on the channel I would like to suggest Exogenesis Symphony - Part 1 (Overture) from The Resistance album, so we all get to see you nerd out over Matt's falsetto again :D

I've been a fan ever since. I've been to 2 of their shows here in Poland - they were ridiculously AWESOME. Best gigs I've ever been to. I really feel Elizabeth missed the message of the song a little bit... "Won't stand down" isn't about the bullies in our lives... it's about the bullying of these very very few assholes (multi-billionaires) who are literally toying with the lives of the whole rest of humanity, constantly oppressing them, constantly making their everyday lives a little bit harder, a little bit worse... and all that to get richer, to get more money, to have more power for them to keep committing crimes daily... crimes that nobody will ever judge them for... It's not about somebody kicking your butt at school... it's about the very very few that control the masses... the ones that are nowadays above the law, above the rest of humanity just because they have fucking MONEY... It's a very powerful song... just sad that nothing will ever change... our world is enslaved by money completely and it will never change... us, the plebes, will have to settle for mediocre, unfulfilling lives that are all about survival while the elite can have and do everything under the sun... we live in the most unfair and unlawful times of modern humanity.... they have managed to put us in a society of the middle ages and are just fooling us that this modern world is "better" and more "civilized" by dangling shiny gadgets in front of us to make us forget how shitty our lives are... Let me ask this one question... what percentage of humanity around the world can say that they can afford to take a vacation, staying in a good hotel for 2 weeks every year? I would bet way less than 10%... 9 out of 10 people will never even have peace and comfort for 2 fucking weeks... I rest my case...

The truckers in Canada sure aren't standing down. But you're right. It starts small scale with bullying, goes to Control, then authoritarianism (total control). How much of this approach is Elizabeth ducking the bullying tactics of KZbin? There are so many channels that say, oh, I can't say that here on youtube, go watch this video on Rumble. Why? Because words? Muse has had a long anti establishment leaning, Resistance, Drones, etc. That 'Death Metal'/Tiger moment at 3:00 in the song? That's the Patient Man's Fury set loose. You don't want to be there when that happens when he's had ENOUGH and WON'T STAND DOWN.
@sportschool35372 жыл бұрын
@@LordNelsonkm I'm gonna disappoint you but the vast majority of people have become completely numb and have no feeling anymore... completely sucked in a parallel universe to ease their suffering (some call it TV, some social media, some video games etc) and they're not ever gonna stand up... plus they can't stand up anyway... the owners of the world (the billionaires) own the media, own the courts, own the governments, own everything... I live in a country that has been completely sold to private businesses (Greece) and the standard of living is fucking atrocious... the average wage is around 1000-1200euros and the rent for a decent one bedroom apartment is easily 400-500 euros (and here the rent doesn't include electricity bills etc)... electricity went up 200% in the last year, heating 120% up, food 20-30% up... And yet the people do nothing... they voice their anger and desperation online... but online doesn't hurt anyone... so who cares... Anyway... I used to be an optimist but now I've lived long enough to know that optimism is for fools... there are ZERO options for a better life, ZERO opportunities for a better job and livelihood in my country... and I'm someone that has a university degree and speaks two foreign languages... The world will go to utter shit my man... and we'll waste our years waiting for it to get better...
