Nina, let me appeal to the producer/engineer in you: there's TWO vocal tracks... one is the main vocal, and the other chains together whispered lyrics, the straight unison double tracking of the main vocal, and the original unpitch-shifted screams. The main scream is pitch shifted down a minor 3rd giving the general timbre of a male scream. Listen carefully through the whole track and follow the second vocal...

They are from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014. Tatiana is mostly self taught. Yes, there is some post production with the layering, but that is all her. This live session was done to showcase Vlad on drums, as he had joined not long before that, but it went viral because of her vocals. Vlad is classically trained on piano, but self taught on drums. He ,Roman (guitar), and Eugene(bass), are all awesome musicians. The guys were stuck in Kiev when the current fighting started last year, but were allowed to leave last summer to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine. I think you are correct with 7/8. Tati's astrological sign is Pisces, she writes the lyrics, the guys write the music. She can do it live too. The usual next step is Perennial live at Wacken 2019.

Great overview. I'd add that the OMV Home Back from their 2019 album Macro is about their hometown getting caught in the war. It's rare that we get the experience of war through the eyes of ordinary people caught in a conflict through their own authentic work rather than filtered through the agenda of some organization's platform. As such even before the invasion it was valuable for giving voice to the millions of ordinary people caught in every war. And since the invasion "we want our home back" has become a theme of the group's performances around the world.

Tatiana is the front woman and vocalist, she has a very impressive voice range, her ability to scream and growl and switch back to sweet soft vocals with smooth transition is world class. Having seen quite a number of your other reactions, it delights me to see you get to Jinjer :) Tatiana's clean vocals are haughntinly beautiful, and you calling them pretty is quite the compliment! The E5 at the end is at the top of her range and she knew recording it that she would struggle to hit it live. She now sings that line using her false chord screams. Considering she smokes and doesn't warm up at all before performing, the fact she's been able to do this for well over a decade now is extremely impressive. Hope you take a look at more of their music!

Great reaction. Tatiana is a Pisces herself and the sign is the 2 fishes/ 2 personalities. It’s very deep lyrically about her struggles as a somewhat introverted person, and the dual vocal styles are just genius, adding to this masterpiece. Not even their best song, but a great starting point. Well done!

Going from 7/8 to 3/4 in the verse sets up the chorus. Even first time listening it feels like it's building to something which is pretty nice when it's not done with volume but with tempo and pace. I think you would like their video "Judgement and Punishment One take vocal" as well as "Perennial live at Wacken Open Air" and "Pit of Consciousness live in Kyiv". Between lyrics, vocals, instrument composition and live performance they are really good. Having said that they have so many good songs on video you pretty much couldn't go wrong in watching just about any of the others out there.

Well done for throwing yourself into this, Nina! Simply superb. as always. Metalcore is not my thing at all but I saw them in NYC in November and basically leant against the front of the stage looking up at them mesmerised! Tati's tone kinda reminds me of Amy Winehouse (hey, I know what I mean LOL). I didn't know it was possible for humans do the things they each can do in a live setting. Vocally, it's the speed and effortlessness with which Tati can switch between angelic vocals and demonic growling. If you want to check out what they are like in a proper live setting, take a look at "Perennial" live at Wacken - a stunning mix of melodic jazz, belting, poetry and, well, noise!

As I'm sure there's already comments below, but if you want to experience them again live their Wacken set for Perennial is absolutely FANTASTIC. It's the one where Tati is dressed up like a Ferrero Rochet lmao If you'd like to experience a similar type thing with another band, Spiritbox is another absolutely incredible band with a singer who's got the sauce. She does one take vocal performances for some of their songs and they're all just bewildering. I'd suggest starting with Circle with Me or Rule of Nines, both are live vocal one takes.

Yes. What you said. Vladislav absolutely kills it on the drums. Eugene and Roman on the guitar and bass show absolutely impeccable timing; the band's incredibly tight synchronicity is showcased in all of their work. This particular song is about dichotomies, with the connection to Pisces being that the star sign is often depicted as two fish swimming in opposite directions. "Today I'll be a friend of mine / who swallows suffering with smile" is about how we mask our feelings and tolerate bad situations. "Pisces swimming through the river / all their lives against the stream / searching for a hook to catch on / and see their sunbeam." This refers to the way naïve young women will seek a relationship that isn't good for them, as they imagine that it will lead to a better place. "Don't suffocate in painful torture / On cutting tables of callous men / Under the knives of handsome butchers / Emeralds are ripped away." This is an admonishment to get out of the toxic relationship, the emeralds being either a metaphor for hopes and dreams or a reference to shiny fish scales.

Hi Nina, great reaction/review. You may have just entered a deep rabbit hole of great Jinjer songs. I've been a musician since I was a kid and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal music with harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I instantly loved them due to their interesting and varied songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the incredible vocals of the "metal goddess" Tatiana, with her amazing ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing to some of the best scream/growl harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. I saw them perform in Boston in November and I can verify that they can pull off the music and vocals in a live performance (and Tatiana has great stage presence). A couple other Jinjer songs I'd recommend to show off their talent and versatility are...Perennial (live from Wacken 2019 video) and Wallflower (official video, which has great production and the song has a very cool "jazzy" groove and harsh vocal only in the latter half, along with lyrics relating Tatiana's struggle of being an introvert in the very public music industry). Another metalcore band that has interesting songwriting and a great female vocalist is Spiritbox (I discovered them at about the same time as Jinjer). BTW, I love your accent...it's like auditory therapy for me! 😁

I forgot to mention that if you want to hear more about Tatiana and her history of singing and learning to do the harsh vocals, Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice KZbin channel did a fantastic interview with her last year that is almost an hour and a half long. Also, there's another Jinjer video that shows off Tatiana's vocals....it's her "one take vocal performance" video for their song Judgement and Punishment.

-For the past year, I have been…..oh, I’ll say it….”hooked” on them because of this song. Well, I discovered them because of this song. However, I became a fan because of another song. After having listened to “Pisces” over and over again, I started checking out some of their other stuff but nothing was hitting. I was wanting another “Pisces” and wasn’t getting it. Then, I watched the official live performance for “Bad Water”, which has some great bass playing something you expressed a fondness for. After I heard that, I got it and I’ve been slowly taking them in. I’ve even taken an appreciation for the songs that didn’t hit the first time around. -Out of everything in the song, my favorite part is “Searching for hooks to catch on….” No matter how many times I’ve heard this song, I have to brace myself before that. That belt is just amazing. I’ve teared up many times after it. -A constant comment I’ve made about them is they’re a lot like Queen. First, you have an amazing lead singer who possesses an amazing presence. To go along with that, you have three talented musicians who aren’t just a back up band. They play just as big of a role as Tatiana. Finally, while they’re pigeonholed in one category, they take so much from other styles to create their own identity. - I think you probably got a lot of the same suggestions(“Judgment & Punishment, Teacher Teacher, Vortex, Perennial from Wacken, etc.). I hinted at Bad Water with the official live version from Napalm Records. From King of Everything, they did two versions of the same song with Prologue and Beggar’s Dance. It’s like with You’re Crazy by Guns ‘N Roses.

Your the first reactor I've seen to catch quickly how the music reflects the lyrics, that's my favorite part of this piece. If you look at one of the lyrical themes of fish being caught the whole pacing of the song is very much like catching a fish. The drummer sticking is the dropping of the hook (90% of reactors pause there), then it is violently pulled, the music eases as line is being given, pulled again, eased again, and then it's jerks till the fish is pulled from the water, and each section mirrors that in it's lyrical tone. It's amazing work.

Tatiana (the singer) is a Pisces (zodiac sign). The song is about the dual nature of those born under the sign of Pisces. The duality is mentioned throughout the lyrics, as well as in the melody and the arrangement. Thus it makes sense that Tatiana interpretation is done in a dual way, classic singing + screaming. It all comes down to the chorus: "Scale armour blaze Virgin innocence One being brings life Another runs for death" The "fish" protective scales eventually meet their end: "Emeralds are ripped away".... "On cutting tables of callous men Under a knife of handsome butchers"

I love watching different people break down this song, cause I see more and more of the symbolism every time - I never noticed the sort of waning in and out, wave-like sound in the melodic parts. I also never noticed how much the time sig changes. A lot of the lyricism and the duality of the melodic and metal sections serves to represent the dual persona of opposites that is attributed to Pisces - two fish swimming in opposite directions, and thus people who are Pisces are said to be pulled in opposite directions internally. Both the wave-like feeling and not settling on one time sig fit with this symbolism. If you want more Jinjer, my vote would be for _Bad Water_ seeing how much you liked the bass. And as others have said, _Perrenial live at Wacken Open Air_ is also good.

I love a lot of songs and there are great singers. But this song is a masterpiece, all put together so smoothly, the opening guitar brings chills, the bass, dude is out of this world, playing open handed both hands. The drums, oh the drums. Such a great tempo, the way it changes and sets the mood! Then Tatiana lures you in with her beautiful voice, and looks❤ only to raise your pulse higher when she growls! Wheew.. and the lyrics, such depth and meaningful words. All this together is one incredible performance! ❤

Fun reaction and kudos for picking up on the amazing musicianship of the whole band. They are a treat. I never liked growls before I discovered them but Tatiana is just so good at all aspects of her vocal performance it's impossible not to be drawn to it. Pisces is about Tatiana through the lens of her Pisces astrology sign - loneliness, introversion, and chronic depression, but also hope on one side; hurt anger and self destructive urges on the other. I was lucky enough to see them twice before the pandemic and they absolutely bring it on stage. Perennial live at Wacken is the usual follow-up to see them do their thing on stage with minimal post production (there are some light clean layers added in that weren't in bootlegs of the show). It also shows off her stage presence and skills as a performer - you'd never guess what she's overcoming to be what her art needs her to be which to me is incredibly inspiring. Subbed. Cheers!

Just a little info on this. Tatiana is a Pisces. :-) And DUALITY: Feminine - Pisces is known as a feminine sign as it is more receptive than assertive in its energy. This is also known as Yin energy (Yang is Masculine). I think the duality really supports switching back and forth in this song. 🤘❤🔥

Tatiana has a beautiful “clean” voice, but I’ll never get tired of people hearing the amazing growling for the first time. 😆

What a great reaction. I like the shock expressions. What I like about the track is the instrumental key changes flowing well with the dramatic vocal changes. It is getting popular for female vocalists to sing like that, especially in Metalcore. A popular group from Canada called “Spiritbox” is a good example. Another is “Ankor - Prisoner”, it switches genres from Pop Rock to Extreme Metal. It now shows ladies are as good as men doing extreme vocals. Demi Lovato’s guitarist Nita Strauss teamed with Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy vocalist) with an amazing track a few months ago with the track: The Wolf You Feed.

So glad you enjoyed it! Yes the flow of the song is superb, despite the many changes 😊

The time signature starts with 7/4 and then shifts to a 6/8, and then 8/4 bridge prior to the chorus. Tatiana said in an interview it's a big challenge for her to write the lyrics to the complex meter that the band writes. For this genre, this song, the composition, production, lyrics, and studio performances from all the band members really stand out. Great call on the wave motion of the song. It's no wonder this was their rocketship.

Tetyana Shmalyuk has been singing in 8 bands since she was 15 years old. She has made extraordinary lyrics to this song. Tetyana was born in 1987 under the zodiac sign of Pisces. As a matter of fact she is singing about a Pisces person revealing the features of character of a Pisces personality, including herself.

Everyone is shocked by Tatiana's vocals but the band is amazing. I've seen them live 2x and they are amazing. Check out "I speak astronomy" what an insane riff
