@@einsp227 I've been in a concert where Phil opened with a piano version of in the air tonight (Hamburg, 2004). In the silent moments of this song you could hear the sound of a neelde in a 12.000 arena. Completely different, but also great. The drum-version I've seen twice (1994 an 1998). They changed the intro everytime a little, after that ist stayed the same.

The timing is impeccable through the entire song. The way he changes the accents on the phrase "I can feel it coming in the air tonight" like 18 times. Lol. The suspenseful build up. The outro is amazing. It's all so beautifully done. This man/band is so sickly talented.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). Incidentally, you were hearing the great Brad Cole on synthesizer and vocoder. Anyway, this song was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

H of The Stage........I watched the brief mention Phil made of the link you provided but I would love to tell you the full story. When the album, "Face Value" came out in 1981, Phil did a brilliant interview where he talked about why he wrote each song on the album. I watched the show and can recall where he talked about "In The Air Tonight". Phil and his wife had bought a house and his wife wanted to get an Interior Designer in make the house more stylish. Phil agreed to it and she made all the arrangements and hired the designer because Phil was busy touring. The problem was that while Phil was away working on his music career, the Interior Designer was at home, working on Phil's wife. Phil finally met the designer, for the first time, when he got back from the tour and the designer handed him the Invoice for the work he had done. It was after this that Phil's wife confessed to the affair. Phil was shattered. His marriage was over and he retreated from the world for awhile. When the words to this song came into his head....he wrote them on the back of the Invoice the Interior Designer had given him. I hope this helps you understand the song better now.

Brad Cole the keyboardist is using a vocoder not AutoTune. The vocoder is not done in all the parts it should be because Brad has to do a keyboard line instead of the vocoder. Phill uses a Eventide harmonizer for his delays and other effects on his voice
@Bluelagoonstudios
@Bluelagoonstudios 2 жыл бұрын
This is not autotune on the BVG, but a vocoder, probably an Eventide H3000 harmonizer hardware. They have it now in a plugin also. It's a powerful tool. You are right, this is one of the better live performances, it's so good that I like this version more than the studio version. I even did a remaster of this song (which I'm do not often).

It’s already been mentioned by other commentators but this is the start of the second half of the concert. The start of the concert is an amazing drum battle between Phil, Chester Thompson and luis conte and it’s definitely worth a watch. Two sets of drums and percussion only and it’s absolutely amazing. And by the way, the additional drummer here is not Phil’s son but Chester Thompson who’s drummed with Phil and Genesis for years. Another awesome drummer.

I have seen hundreds of reactions to this performance by Phil, and I have enjoyed yours the most. You really get it. You get him and the atmosphere that he is creating as a masterful showman. Your insights into this masterpiece are spot on. Liked and subbed. The first day I heard this song on the radio in 1981 - I knew that what I was hearing was the birth of something iconic! Not your ordinary hit song but a narrative that would last for decades! BTW, the drummer for this tour was not Phil's son but the talented and magnificent Chester Thompson.

two of the best live performances i have witnessed growing up was seeing Pink floyd and Genesis in 1987, absolutely iconic at the peak of their sustained music ability, both were as incredible as this live version, Chester thompson & Phil Double druming, Daryl Sturmer, seen here staple live musicians Daryl working with him on solo projects including 'in the air' is masterful. If you grew up in the 80's this is iconic . At the time it was stated it was about his divorce. His wife was cheating with their decorator. TV show Miami Vice which was huge everywhere in the 80's used this as Don Johnsons theme when he drove his Ferrari round Miami at night. The music & fashion on the show made it iconic for the time.

In this concert with all the old goodies, there are a lot of musicians, a good choir, etc, you should look at it, it's amazing! Phil Collins - Finally...The First Farewell Tour Paris 2004 He started as a drummer in Genesis, so it comes naturally for him. Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980. In a 2016 interview, Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration".

Love how you pick up on the polyrhythms between his voice and drums. This is his secret sauce along with perfect timing, so you should definitely try some Genesis. He (and also Peter Gabriel) often sing 'against' the music. Very cool. And Genesis loves to combine voice and instruments with similar intonations and orchestrate with layers of sound and percussion. Very sophisticated music with much nuance. But it will be hard to find anything that can match this powerful, magical performance.....and that still takes my breath away. Oh! yes! That bow, so cool.

I know what you are saying: The vocoder just adds to the conveyance of the song and its impact!! And at the right times! So subtly effective!!!

I'm a little young to have grown up a Genesis fan, but my older siblings got me into Genesis. So many Genesis fans choose to be in the Peter Gabrial or Phil Collins camp. I love them both and Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford with the great Chester Thompson that joined so Phil could fill both his roles. The best was when Chester would start a drum solo and Phil would join in making it this epic drum battle. With Genesis or solo, there was nothing like Phil live, and I went to a lot of concerts. They always worked with the best, like "Gandalf" Leland Sklar, Darrel Stuermer, and the rest of the band. Side note: When with Genesis, auditioning musicians included getting to know them a bit. If they didn't have a sense of humor, they wouldn't get the gig. They believed in choosing people you enjoyed working with. They must have been a great band to be in.

I'll tell you, I went to a little concert in Nov of 1981 that had everyone filled with crazy anticipation waiting for the first riff. I love Phil Collins but no one has topped seeing Freddie Mercury and Queen. It's been 40 years and likely that many concerts since but no one has topped Queen yet.

@@HofTheStage 2004 in Paris/story was more about a cheating spouse. It caused a delay with Genesis. This song was his first solo release if I recall correctly. Phil has expanded his repertoire immensely since I first saw Genesis in concert with Peter Gabriel out front singing.

Do we know for sure he started the concert with this song? It could've been a long break towards the end, or an encore. He was sweating in this performance. I don't know though. Update: It is the 16th song in the concert. Full concert here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYHdo41jZsxgbbc or In the Air Tonight starts here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYHdo41jZsxgbbc?t=4723
