This song was written after they fired Tarja and the backlash that ensued. It was particularly rough on Tuomas who composed and wrote the lyrics. This song is about his depression and suicidal thoughts during that time. He will often cut the vocals out of his in-ears when they perform this. The song was away of killing himself without actually doing it. Marco has been singing/playing since the 80s starting with his band Tarot. He's a a very underrated vocalist in my opinion. Try the Islander live at Tampere or High Hopes from End of and Era for more Marco goodness.

@@theophany1770 it was a huge mess but the gist of it is at one point she told them she would only do one more album but no touring to support it. She started focusing on her solo career and a huge rift was created. All the other members decided it was time and fired her with an open letter. Tuomas got the brunt of the media and fan backlash. Everyone envolved now agrees it could have been handled better and that is why you will see a lot of contention with NW fans.

@@wren180: Also, on this same album, "Dark Passion Play", two more songs were written by Tuomas Holopainen, about the dismissal of Tarja, and her soon to be husband. Tuomas had to make the hardest decision of his lifetime: kicking his old schoolmate out of the band or disbanding the band. He decided that without Tarja the band has an uncertain future but with her it has no future at all. It really hurted his heart to make this decision and when it was made and he felt really miserable about it, he got so much hatred as a reaction. That situation can destroy anyone. And despite what happened he still likes Tarja and hopes that their relationship will be alright again one day.

@Nikioko
@Nikioko 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesanderson5268 The situation was a bit more complicated. Solo career yes, but "constantly threatening" no. The plan when she was to leave the band for her solo career was fix, so there was enough time for looking for replacements, no need to kick her early. The problem was that there were tensions because of her husband who had too much bad influence on her. Maybe you should read Tuomas' open letter that describes the situation quite well.

Nice reaction! Want to be on a boat with these guys? Can be done: "Yours is an empty hope" live, the official video to the song is from a performance they did on the Baltic Princess Cruise liner. Its a heavy song where Marco Hietala, the base player, does the clean vocals and Floor does the deep growling parts. Quite something different, but highly enjoyable.

Great reaction, mate! Nightwish hasn't done any soundtracks as far as I know. Although they made a movie once. It included their song from the album Imaginaerum. But they left the movie business since it was so much work. Kai Hahto, the drummer might not be human at all. If you want to see him at his limits, check out Wintersun - Sons Of The Winter And Stars (live rehearsal) You should react to that song, it has quite a few different vocals. In that band the vocalist writes and composes the songs just as Tuomas Holopainen is the mastermind of Nightwish. In the first album (Wintersun) he even played all the instruments but drums.

You're not wrong when you have the feeling hearing soundtrack. Tuomas not really write songs, he writes storys. Each pieces of music he writes come from a story he have in his head and he want tell with music. He said himself, in his head, he have a kind a soundtrack for a story, and write on it until he found the perfect sound, the perfect note.. An example of that, the last album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, come the book of the same name of Richard Dawkins and all the album tell the story of life.

Boy soprano (treble) in the first part, plus the spoken part is by a boy soprano (I used to be one a zillion years ago so I know the sound). In the original version with Anette Olsen, the "Sparkle my scenario" was also sung by a boy soprano. Floor is now doing that part and she's singing lightly, imitating the boy soprano sound as best as a woman can do.

its the soundtrack to part of the songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas' life. i find that looking up the story then watching it again with the lyric version on can almost bring one to tears, the lyric version is probably best for a first watch as the song has 5 parts and the title of each part comes up for example the last part is called mother and father and tells the story of Tuomas going home in his misery and his parents explaining that hardship will always come (the blade will keep on descending) but that he should focus on his gift ( you have oceans within) and the good he can do (try to save them all) remembering always that they love him (in the end i will always love you) its well worth another listen with the lyrics and knowledge of the story especially knowing now all is well with him

Because it was Annette on the lead in the studio version... her voice was just too fragile for change-ups like that, I suppose. Same tendency can be found in numerous "Imaginaerum" songs, where Floor live just takes over in the spots you had choirs fill on the studio recording. One clear instance to compare - "Storytime".

Nice pick. :) Great comment about being on the boat with them. Peaople actually in the past had that chance to hear them on a boat. And you actually might to react to one of the songst they filmed there. Yours is an Empty Hope - live on Nightwish Cruise on Baltic Princess. Oh yes, you may hear Floor's harsh vocals on that one. And for more Marco's vocals - clean this time - The Islander live in Tampere Cheers :)

Marco Hietala is singing also in his own groups like Tarot (you must see song tides live from dvd undead indeed), powerless trio, northern kings and many many more like guest. He is the real voice of finland!

Talking about boats... Their song Yours is an empty hope Live was performed on cruise ship. (they had full concert there, but the best version live for that song is from that concert)

You just talked to the whole clue of this song. Maybe you're a good vocal coach but damn, listen to the song itself.

Her name is pronounced Floor Jansen with a soft J like "Yansen". The beginning is not Floor, everything else is. You should definitely check the backstory of this song, it's really touching!

3 minutes and counting... did you count? For some contrst in Nightwish's versatility, try Storytime and Romantacide from the Wacken 2013 concert.

The original singer was Anette Olzon though, not Floor Janssen.

It's good that you were able to upload this. Check out Nightwish's cover of High Hopes where Marco was the lead singer they really made that song their own. Islander is also good!!

As pointed out, Marco has been singing forever. One of his best live tracks (with Nightwish anyway) would probably be Phantom of the Opera from End of an Era

What impresses me most about the ending of this song is, she at points sounds almost identical to the previous singer who she replaced, and it's purely by technicality and skill. She's not imitating at all, her ability just makes her sound like a studio recorded original.

The voice in the beginning is a boy. Represents the scared/hiding/wounded child in the poet in the song.
