People have been critizing growls forever. It is a style of singing that is very prevelent in African American singers, where she gets most of her influence from. They (we) growl to show emotion. They are NOT the result of vocal damage as she has been doing them her entire career.

She strains a lot those growls aren't healthy and her supported range has gotten smaller with age-she can still sing but she definately isn't an amazing singer technicality wise

Darius Coates Her growling and distortion HAVE TO BE healthy otherwise she wouldn't be able to continuously use those techniques every two seconds in every performance she does since she was 7 years old. If her techniques were so unhealthy she wouldn't be able to speak for days or sing on tours night after night. Her voice would be shot very quickly. And it would most certainly not last three decades. But 20 years in the business and her voice is still the same (slightly darkened and less ease) but still a force to be reckoned with.

Anyone that thinks Christina, one of the biggest pop stars the past 25 years, is not a good singer, is NUTZZZZZ!!!!! One of the very few voices in pop music with a vocal range that spans 4 octaves, 50+ million records sold, 5 #1 records, 17 in the top 10, 23 in the top 40, 5 Grammy awards, 1 Latin Grammy, Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, etc. Accolades isn't everything, though, which is why it's very cool to hear her voice maintain its high standards.

I wish you would've read everything I wrote in my previous post, because that's pretty much what I said when I typed: "Accolades isn't everything," However, someone does not collect that type of hardware for being just a 'good' singer - They must excel to win so much. My main point, though, was to say that, after a couple of decades of being such a dominant singing force, it's nice to see from this video that she still has a very powerful voice - Impressive!

I didn't contradict myself at all. I first pointed out many of her awards, records, etc. to demonstrate that she's one of the most decorated pop singer of the last few decades and then I rightfully stated that these accolades aren't' everything. In the end, the actual quality of voice, which she absolutely crushes, is also a factor. I closed by stating that it was nice, after a couple of decades, she still has an amazing voice, as evidenced by this Carpool Karaoke.

People love Cristina because of her power, those riffs, those distortion she does in her voice, that passion and power she puts in her singing. I mean even rock vocalists like her. She has this very unique style of rock vibe in her voice in a soul rnb pop-ish package. That is Cristina. And there's no one else like her. Don't make her ordinary by suggesting that she has to follow the rules of singing. Rules belong in the opera world and classical music. Not in our world of awesome and passionate singing where individuality and creative freedom is everything.

By the way she is already recognized as one of the greatest vocalist of all time. And she has received an award for the voice of a generation. Critics and experts of modern music can see her talent. Voice teachers of classical singing cannot. Opera and classical singing is a rotting genre that nobody appreciates. That's where most of harsh critics of Cristina come from.

Areli Ortiz the reason is probably that she sings with a fake big voice. A low larynx is basically her trademark. Her natural voice is so feminine and light. It's just sad, because her singing style limits her support so much. But her runs are so lovely

Rachael Parker oh sorry, I should explain it a bit more detailed 😃 “Fake big voice” = singing with a lowered larynx, a very chesty mix with quite a lot of throatiness and tongue tension to create a fuller and darker sound. Christinas Natural voice is very beautiful, but way lighter and brighter than her “signature” voice. There are some rare videos where she sings naturally. It sounds great, but very different :D (but definitely better technically) It’s quite funny.. Britneys natural voice was quite powerful and low back then - they forced her to sing in a very nasally and breathy way.. a lot lighter. Christinas Natural voice is quite bright, but she chose to sing with that “fake” big voice - they should have switched the careers xD

It is almost like these critics haven't listened to anything in the Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, and Metalcore genres. A lot of those vocalists can sing REALLY WELL, along with Screaming and Growling their guts out!

Christopher McArdle yep. Just search Melissa Cross, a vocal coach who teaches growls. Also, I'm a huge metal fan. Sure some vocalists hurt their voices, but I've been following some bands for 20 years and they're fine.

Growling has very different definitions between pop and metal, lol. I do agree, though. My 2 favorite genres of music are r&b-styled pop (Christina, Mariah, Celine, Whitney esque) and metalcore-hardcore-emo. Lots of artists like Kellin Quinn, Ronnie Radke, Ollie Sykes don't always get the recognition they deserve for their intense vocals.

I'm a huge fan of technical and trained vocalists like Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Barbra Streissand, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle and many more more. However, Christina is just pure amazing, she has her own style and guess what it works for her. It's so odd to me when people knock Christina for her technique, talent, etc when there are easier things you could knock her for that don't make you just sound like a straight up hater. Do I like Christina's personality? Nah. Do I listen to her music? Not regularly, but there are some bangers I love. Is she hella talented like no other and still managing extremely high quality vocals for well over 20 years, after being run into the ground in the Disney machine, through pregnancy and kids, and so much more? Hellsss yeah. She's still powerful, clear, has great control. Her talent and technique are great. Now.... if you *want* to really criticize, just hit her for her endless, unnecessary, non-self aware runs. That's a legit criticism. She'll throw em in anywhere, and can completely ruin a song by throwing in the whole, damn runny kitchen sink. Unlike Jessie J who does it to be funny and laughs during some of them or is doing it for quirk, Xtina does it juuuust to be an extra diva. And, that's fine. You do you boo. But, it's a legit criticism and one that anyone could have without making you sound like a total moron by trying to knock her actual talent and vocal skill. Because that shit's still on-point. When I was younger I used to sing all the time and was self taught. I used to be told to pursue singing as a career, although I was never confident enough to try. So becoming an adult had made me lose touch in my passion of singing and (even if it wasn’t to pursue a career) watching your videos and your explications of vocal techniques Inspired me to sing again. I took her masterclass, the growls are called Texture, which I already knew, and idk about criticism, I always tried to emulate her, and those growls, she's a badass and her vocals are insane. She's a queen and a living legend and I literally have chills every time I hear her sing... she is incredibly talented and knows exactly what she's doing at every moment. She's a master of her craft, a professional perfectionist and her techniques are the envy of any musician.

Honestly since finding your channel, I appreciate artists so much more. I use to think that it was just talent, and some people got it and some don't. (Which is still the case to a certain extent) I now know that a lot of amazing singers, even if they are just talented, still put a lot of work into their singing and developing their voice. Always wanted to do that grown thing, but I always sing not very loud to not disturb neighboors very much. I saw this video and was out driving (happens very rarely since I have no car, I borrowed one) First time I did the growling thing where it sounded natural, you have to feel it and be loud. :D So satisfying.

I freeeeeaking love the growls she does. The entire song “Fighter” is a peace of GEM which I still have in my phone and listen to when I was pissed off at something/someone. Christina is a free spirit who does not confirm to the “standards” the society place on how many times a female singer is supposed to growl (apparently only one or two times) in a song or in an entire album. And good for her! Hater’s gonna hate but I’ll always be a fan of her and her amazing growls.

YESSSSSS! Feeling the Christina love! I literally was holding my hand over my heart agreeing with everything you said like "Yess, yes, yeeesss hunty!" So many people love to diss and throw shit at Christina and her apparent "Corrupted vocal technique" "Shitty growls" "Star spangled banner fail"... Honestly these people are reaching out of desperation but Christina is an unbothered Queen and an impeccable force in the industry with an impressive artillery of vocal range and technique. Christina is amazing. I prefer this style of singing with her more than many other avenues of performance. Her master class? Wow. I love this one on one with her, vocally it transcends many other mediums that she already has spent years slaying. Just her. No distractions.
