Vocal Coach Reaction to Prince - Kiss - Ken Tamplin
Rock guys don’t dance, or DO they?
Composed, written and produced by Prince, “Kiss” has been described as an, “instant party with an edge of menace”. "Kiss" became Prince's third number-one US hit and earned him yet another Grammy. This performance, on the Ellen Show, is an embellished version of the original; extra ‘funked up’ with a tasty horn section. As a performer, Prince was known for his showmanship and charisma. Take note of his effortless attitude, relentless energy and total command of the performance.
Described as rock's greatest ever natural talent, Prince’s singing abilities encompassed a wide range from falsetto to baritone and effortless shifts of register. Prince was also renowned as a multi-instrumentalist. Considered a guitar virtuoso and a master of drums, percussion, bass, keyboards, and synthesizer. On his first five albums, he played nearly all the instruments. In the late 1970s. Prince pioneered the Minneapolis sound, which is a subgenre of funk rock with elements of synth-pop and new wave.
Prince said it best in the lyrics of “Kiss”, “You just leave it all up to me, I'm gonna show you what it's all about” and he sure as heck did.

Prince is "The One". There is no equal to him in terms of pure musicality, songwriting, technical ability, and stage charisma. That rare combination of prodigal artist and captivating entertainer. I'm a grizzly old rocker in my mid-fifties, with a record collection that spans over half a century of rock music, and yet Prince's "Sign o' the Times" (his magnum opus, in my opinion), is still my favourite album of all time.

I could not agree more! I'm a total rock guy and Prince was always just an amazing talent and was fascinating to watch and hear (also, one very under appreciated guitar player). Today's popular music completely and totally pales in comparison to his stuff. Great video KT! God bless and rock on.

That HOF vid gives me goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME. In my opinion, I think there's only a handful of ppl in the WORLD who could take that iconic Clapton solo and make it 10x better than the original. I believe that's why when Clapton was asked who the best guitarist was, he said Prince. He was the modern day Beethoven

Prince doesn't just "embellish" the song - he's paying homage to Sam & Dave by playing the intro to their hit Soul Man before entering into his own song. This intro is so famous everyone should recognize it instantly.

Prince was my favorite artist. I was working at WBAL radio station in 1978 when his single soft and wet. Nobody wanted to play his record until he went on Saturday night live almost a year later. I first saw Prince in concert at the Washing DC armory in 1983 on tour with the time and Vanity 6. The last time I saw prince was the musicology tour in Miami Florida in 2004. The world was a better place with Prince in it. Thanks for this video.

@@kentamplin yes he did and the Stones we're visionary for including him on the tour regardless of the crowd response. By the way I finally caught the Stones live in Miami in the late 90s. Pink Floyd, The Stones, Sade and Prince were my best concerts by the way Sade was 3rd row center she gave 5 encores and Prince 1983 show was standing room only I was at the front of the stage so close to Vanity I could smell her perfume. By the way if you get a student to perform Sade I would LOVE to see that.

Prince was master arranger as well as a great musician. He was a band leader in the old school mode ( James Brown, Duke Ellington) yet he was also a studio and stage visionary in almost every popular music genre. He redid his songs in concert every time he played. A master rhythm guitarist and lead player. I love his lead playing but I'd have him in the top 5 rhythm guitarists ever. .In regards to his life in music, I can't think of anyone that has lived and breathed music more than that man. He wrote maybe 2500 songs in his most prolific decade. Research his back catalogue. It's massive. There are Rock records in there. The greatest talent of all time.

I've heard it said many times, Prince was music. It ran thru his body like the life giving blood we all need. Yes even rockers loved him, you just can't find that kind of talent. He played 27 instruments, he and his bands practiced very very long days and even up all night into the next day. He was totally amazing. If you're ever wondering about his skill on guitar, go watch him play "My guitar Gently Weeps" at the MHF. All the other players literally stepped back and let him do his thing. He was a good Christian person that loved God in all his glory💜

Hi Ken, I asked you to do a reaction to Prince and I didn't realize you already did one. My bad. Prince had a studio in his house, along with a big stage and lights like what he had on tour. Prince used to make his band endure grueling practice day after day, hour after hour for twelve to sixteen hours straight until everything was perfect. Prince would sing, play guitar and perfect every dance move along with his band until he felt it was perfect enough to do in front of an audience. Prince's band probably wanted to run for their lives when he finally let them out of his house. Thanks for another great video. Keep rocking!

Love Kiss. It took me years to love the original song, but it happened. It was a real change from his previous music, and his falsetto surprised many critics new to him. But the song (and the short hair) was quite the sensation. In fact, interesting story about me after discovering Prince in the early 80s: the anticipation about When Doves Cry (early 84) made me imagine the song, and it was still called black music back then, without being offensive.. (In the papers, MJ was RnB, Prince and Grandmaster Flash were Black music) The thing is, the song turned out exactly like i expected it to be, and like I imagined. I listened to it like a mantra, until the end of 84. (Okay, I didn't realise until much later that it had a heavy hypnotic feel). WDC was the definitive 'black' music track, the epitome of that genre, and I had issues loving pretty much anything else as much for some time, and even some other Prince's songs faced the injury of comparison to the masterpiece.

Hi Ken, I really want to hear you talk about Prince's vocal techniques on "The Beautiful Ones", especially the high growl, falsetto, and scream. His support sounds excellent in all those techniques. I lose my voice more easily after using falsetto even if I'm careful with my breath support, so I'd really appreciate it if you could shed light on that. I practice with your How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else every day. Are there any particular tracks that help me with those techniques?

Prince is, was, and will always be a true musical genius. The man could play over 20 instruments, recorded his whole first album by himself, playing and singing every single part and mixing the whole thing. He had the clothes, the moves, the voice that to this date I've never heard anyone that can get to all his ranges. It's so sad what happened, how it happened, gone far far too soon. I might add a huge philanthropist, he gave back in so many ways, but kept it all hush hush, he didn't want people knowing it was him. To think of him dying like that all alone breaks me heart. Great reaction Ken :-) Never got into Prince as a kid, never bought albums or went to his concerts, I liked Prince, all of his music a very talented man, to bad he left us early in life. A phenomenal guitarist. I do appreciate his talent and charisma, if he was still here on earth I'd most likely go to one of his concerts. Great reaction again, I was intrigued when this video was posted I was like F@*% YEAH!!! (excited)

Ken Tamplin , Prince was once asked how he keeps all his hits so current. Being Prince he responded how he always felt it important to add new musicians. They brought their style to his music. Candy Duffer on horns, but dam when he had on Maceo Parker he was groovin full FUNK. I loved Maceo when he played for James Brown.

Genius is an overused word but even that doesn't feel strong enough to describe the phenomenon that prince is. Sorry, was. Shocking to think it was his 3rd death anniversary just the other day. My heart aches when I think about it bc I just can't accept he's really gone. I miss him so much. Happy coincidence to see this as I just watched the version recorded at paisley park as recently uploaded by the official site. Every version blows my mind, no less for the equally funky performance and choice of look. ❤

To dance and sing simultaneously is very difficult. While some artists choose to lip sync while dancing__I have much respect for those artists like Prince and Bruno Mars who do both' live'!!

Here you have a music-genius I really whant you react on Freddie Mercury! He had a mezmerising voice, a really good, good band behaind him. He was a super song-writher. He was magical, he did whatever he whant on stage, he never had a songlesson. He had doing boxing, long-distanse run. And danse a little ballett, he could sing falsett, rock, pop, funk, jazz, opera, he had the mic in one hand and the audiens in the outher hand. Queen had the best performing at Live Aid july 13 -85. I have been a big Queen-fan sence 1977. The world lost the best frontman when he sadely died november 24 -91. R.I.P Freddie 🙏 love you and miss you 👑♥️ Thank you……..

Glad to see you review the Purple Wonder! I saw him and Shiela in Ames in the 1980's and was lucky enough to sit in back right above Shiela as he wasn't playing in the round. It was the best show I have ever seen. He was a musical genius that had all the tools. The Super Bowl rain performance was also awesome as you didn't know if he was going to get shocked from all the cords or stuck by lightning and he didn't care. The show was going to go on!

Check out Prince's guitar solo on Tom Petty's live cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (2004 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame) regarded by many platforms in the top 25 greatest guitar solos of all time. It was phenomenal. At the end he threw the electric guitar up in the air....the camera catch it land down on the ground but it was Tom Petty's guitar lent to Prince for that performance. The words was that Petty was super pissed off Prince did that. Prince just walk off the stage after that with swagger as if to say "that's how you do the solo Clapton".

Prince was music. He ate, slept, breathed music! You are 100% correct he was a musical genius, so many have no clue just how much of musical perfectionist he was. True story, he said "I'm the only man in the world that can walk in a bar in heels and walk out with your girl" 😭 still miss him so so much... he played ALL instruments on his first album. He could play 27 instruments, could hit notes that only a few ever could.. YES the purple master is still missed💜😭💜
