Vocal Coach Reaction to Queen - Freddie Mercury - Live Aid - Ken Tamplin
He is the champion of the world
Queen’s performance at Live Aid should have been a footnote in history. By 1985 the band, Queen, was in decline. With ebbing popularity and stinging from the negative press of an ill-advised series of concerts in apartheid-ruled South Africa, the band was slotted between mega acts, U2 and Elton John. Queen was not expected to stun and amaze anyone. That was until Freddie Mercury took the stage. A stripped down set, sans the costumes and spectacle of their earlier years, there was nothing to distract from the performance. And what a performance it was. Leading the enthralled crowd in a rhapsodic sing-along of their greatest hits Freddie could command a stage like few before or since. And the rest, as they say, is history.
This particular performance continues to inspire me nearly 34 year later.

Mark Bennett Freddie was incredibly bold and brave for going out there and performing that day (despite his doctor telling him he should not) for the cause, and of course, as the band said, all of the bands were doing it for the famine in Ethiopia in addition to giving off one heck of a performance. All of them wanted to show off their talents and promote their bands- The older ones not so much but of course The bands who were still making albums and touring. Freddie Mercury was extremely generous anyway, and he would’ve done it alone had he been put in this position. Each of the bandmembers did their individual work but I don’t think any of them had the chemistry that all four members of Queen had together. They were unique and they were special! ❤️

Mari of the Shire yes! All of the bandmates were different and Brian was mostly a rock person, Roger was rock and jazz, Freddie was a little bit of everything, & John was wonderful with either soft loving music like “ you’re my best friend” or funky music. I thought it was funny when another one bites the dust came out and it was put on R&B . Why not? Queen was great and that song was absolutely incredible. We would dance and rollerskate to it all night long.

I totally agree with you about Marc Martel. In my opinion he is one of very few Artists with pure talent that doesn't need the aid auto tune. A really solid singer! But in my opinion not a single patch on the overall package of Freddie - Including his quirky vibrato, Which along with his mesmerizing tone, Makes everything he sung so magical. Marc sings their songs so well tho, I'm not surprised the band work with him. Just to add one more thing. This 20 min slot they had at live aid was amazing, A little disrespectful this man shrugging off some of the performance.. But I guess he had a particular mission for his talking points.

What's amazing to me is that you can tell clear as day that the vocal coach is singing along in his head and trying not to verbally sing along. Queen was my very first concert... The Forum in LA...1982. I was 14 and WAY too young to be out with the group of Marines I was with...drinking and partying. But...it was one of the best nights of my life and no concert has ever compared. My teenage daughters (who have fallen in love with Queen and my COOL status has gone up a notch 😜) and I found pics and video from the concert I went to and we actually found me in the crowd...couldn’t miss me with my feathered beach blonde hair, my solid gold metallic blouse and white slacks that laced at the ankles. I remember everything! I wore super hot gold metallic heels...and lost one of the backs to my gold hoop earrings and worried all night about losing it. I was SMASHING that night!!! And...got home pretty tipsy but unscathed. I actually married one of those marines a few years later! Anyway...I feel so honored to have gotten to see them! And, at their best. My husband now, the love of my life, took me to see Tom Petty and we were so glad because he died a year later. So...very honored to have gotten to see him too! And yes...I dressed for the concert...black and white patterns from head to toe including the sexiest pair of black and white striped high heels you’ve ever seen! Was so afraid that it was for nothing by the end of the concert and he hadn’t sang “Don’t come around here no more”....but...they came back and did it for the encore 😊 I love your videos and how you notice things many others don’t. Thanks for letting me relive some wonderful nights!!!!

I was fortunate to see them twice. Once In the late seventies and again at Wembley in 86 I believe. Freddie's voice had changed so much. When I listened to him the first time he had a very pure soft voice with tremendous power. In 1986 his voice was different had a different Timbre and characteristic to it. It seemed like he was really having to strain to reach the notes where before they were effortless for him. Still one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen there will never be another one like him. Just say the man was an enigmatic performer is not giving him justice. I guess the best way to describe him was he had a voice and he would strut on the stage as if he owned it. Even today his voice is unequaled by anyone. Not just an amazing singer but an amazing performer and songwriter. Thanks for taking us back to one of the most memorable performances in the history of Rock. Rock on Ken. BTW your course is amazing Ken I have already added nearly five notes to my range. Thank you so much!

They altered the movie a bit so as to address the AIDS issue somewhat, but not dwell on it. Since the timeframe if the movie ended in 1985, it feels like he was sick in 1985. But he was not. He was not diagnosed with the disease until, I think 1989. He did not tell the band until a while later and he made the news public less than 24 hours before he died. For the Live AID concert, he had a throat infection. The doctor did not want him to sing. But he did not want to miss partipating in this fundraising concert. The infection is why he goes sharp on a couple of notes and why he indeed does not hold a few notes as long as he normally would have. But who cares....it was Freddie Mercury and Queen! It was an outstanding performance! I love watching it every time. It never gets old. ❤ ❤

I remember back in '94, I was in Mexico City and when I took the subway, there was this ad in one of the wagons about a school teaching Stage Presence. It had that famous picture of Freddie on stage in front of thousands of people in Wembley. I was so excited since I was a fan. Freddie was something else. I've made ex girlfriends and friends watch that concert with me in the past, most of them didn't care much about Queen's music, but after watching the band and Freddie's performance in that concert, they loved it. Specially Freddie. All these nice comments they all made about him, made me feel great. "Now you know what I know and feel what I feel. Pass it on"- I used to tell them. Thank you Ken!. It's always a pleasure watching your videos.

Thank you for giving such an honest reaction. Everybody raves about this Queen performance and they are great. But Freddie's voice was not perfect, I've heard that a doctor told him not to do it, due to a throat problem. His voice did crack at the end of We Are The Champions. But I have every DVD of Queen and regardless of maybe him singing slightly off key, you just can't take your eyes off Freddie. He also has perfect posture when he struts that stage. Only kids and gymnasts tend to have perfect posture, we lose it as we get older. He was made for the stage. I used to fancy him when they first started then I found out I was on the wrong bus ;) They did do a lot of rehearsals prior to this Live Aid. Unlike Led Zeppelin's performance, which they have tried their best to keep it off YT, but it keeps getting put back up. I love Led Zep, but even I have to admit Robert's vocal was terrible and Jimmy was away with the fairies!

Him ending "We are the Champions" with "of the world" in this performance must be why the conspiracy people think the Mandela effect exists. They could swear that the studio version always ended with that, instead of "we are the champions," and then all of a sudden one day it was erased.

He did hit a C5 note on We are the Champions. Marc Martel is good, but he is not Freddie, it is very easy to distinguish their voices if you know Queen's music. He does not have the same power and deepness to his voice, he is not that good with his lower notes. Freddie's voice had resonance on both high and low notes, which is very rare. He almost never sang one phrase with the same pitch and colour. He coloured almost every word. But most importantly he sang with real emotion, you believed every word he sang and it always felt as if he was always giving 100%, with every performance.

Exactly...Marc Martel is famous for imitating Freddie, not for his own singing voice which is different from Freddie's. Marc's voice is too clear, not enough emotion and color in his voice. Another thing, when Marc is having a hard time imitating Freddie live, it's bad. Freddie appeared on Live Aid against his doctor's orders because he had a bad throat infection. For someone singing with a bad infection, I think he did an amazing performance.

Ahhh Ken!! Thank you thank you thank you!! ❤️❤️ these four guys are the greatest & Freddie Mercury is the best front man and male vocalist of all time just in my opinion and and some others. This band with the whole package deal with Brian May on the guitar ❤️❤️ Roger Taylor on the drums and John Deacon on bass.. all four were top song riders as well. Pretty impressive!! It took them a couple years to get a head but once they found their sound was sheer heart attack, it was full speed ahead. I’m a huge fan of Brian May & The few songs that he and Freddie did together, including one later on during the show, were absolutely outstanding and just beautiful and sometimes tearjerking.

Such a shame you didn't do Radio Gaga along with the 'call and response' with the audience. It epitomizes Freddie as a frontman. The fact that he could at any time hold the whole audience in the palm of his hand. I think you missed so many things about Queen which made Queen great! The fact that they practiced for a week of rehearsals with clocks hanging around so they could time their set perfectly. Or the fact that Freddie's throat was so infected that the doctor told him not to sing. Information I always just thought was a rumor until I saw it in a documentary from back in 1985 or 1886. And although I think Mark Martell has a lovely voice, and can do a nice impersonation of Freddie, Mark is no frontman, nor does he have the creative genius to write Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, etc.

I really think Freddie was so gifted in terms of how high pitched his natural voice was that even diminished (due to hard partying and endless touring) he was better than anyone because EVERYONE including Marc Martel are going up their range to meet Freddie's baseline, Freddie is going lower to hit his notes in his mid tessitura.....he had to show restraint to not soar on everything. So strange. So rare. So alien. So beautiful. He was our generation's Farinelli.
