As a 71-year-old man. I like to see that the younger generation are moving to a much more accepting society. Just let people be themselves, as long as they do no harm to others. Mutual respect is a human right. My generation was Flower power and many have forgotten the message of inclusion. I am sorry about Maga. Respect can only be lost not taken. This is the message I take from this artist. Cheers PS a roan is a type of horse.

Great reaction! Just found your page because I’m a huge Chappell fan. More Chappel history: she was signed to a major record label at age 17 but her singles and EP for that label didn’t sell too well. She wanted to turn to a more pop direction and the label didn’t agree. They let her release PPC in March of 2020 and when it didn’t sell, mostly due to the pandemic, they dropped her. She moved back home to Missouri for a year to save some money but returned to LA in 2021 and began self-releasing singles and videos with her producer. She released nine songs independently in 2022 and 2023 and then released her first full album in Oct 2023. That’s the album she’s still promoting today. So after years of struggling and getting dropped by a major label she now in the past six months has played huge festivals, won the MTV award for best new artist, played on Saturday Night Live, was on the cover of Rolling Stone, and is nominated for six Grammys. She’s amazing! I recommend checking out: Her full album Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess Good Luck Babe on the Tonight Show Good Luck Babe on the VMAs Tiny Desk Concert Full Lollapalooza performance

❗❗READ DIANE the song it’s about her first experience being at a gay bar, The Abbey! she talked about it in one of her interviews i listened too, how it was kind of her first time seeing other queer people so open and proud. There was a strip club in Springfield (Chappell’s “hometown”) called The Pony. The whole building was painted pink. Got motorboated by Chelsea Charms there once. Good times.

I'm not familiar with Chappell Roan. I'd heard her name a couple of times, but that's about it. You asked if they were really playing the guitar. I highly doubt it. It's not a live video, and almost everyone in it is an actor. I think the audio is mostly the studio recording with a little non-musical sound added to it, and the video was filmed separately. Reading between the lines, the song seems to be about her breaking away from her parents and doing things they might not approve of. As she said, she came from a highly religious, conservative background. The video starts with her looking like a shy girl in a country bar and gradually adds elements like an (implied) stripper pole, drag queens, gay guys in leather, etc. For future reactions, how about Carly Simon? Her most famous song is "You're So Vain," which you may have already heard. That song has left a lot of people guessing ever since it came out. If you already know that song, you could react to "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" (there's a really good live version of it on KZbin), "Anticipation," or "Haven't Got Time for the Pain." Thanks!

@DianeJennings Chapell recently went through some drama on Twitter. When Taylor Swift announced her endorsement of Kamala Harris in the presidential election, Chapell came out later and said something about her own endorsement. A large portion of the world responded with 'who cares? And who do you think you are announcing this as though it would mean something to us?" ( Basically accusing her of having notions) Apparently, she was "traumatized". It more or less coincided with the s n l appearance. I don't listen to her, but I know about this from the comments on the snl video

I searched for more of Chappell Roan's music and listened to three other songs. Pretty voice, and I think this particular song / video is representative of her other work. All of the songs are about the same musically, but the lyric to this particular song is the most mainstream and likely to be featured on commercial radio. The other songs I previewed were more thematically adult-oriented. I can see where her songs would speak to a target audience. The comments that people are leaving to her videos indicate that, despite the pop music quality of the songs, they not pretty pop, and many of the listeners strongly identify with the messaging. Search them out and decide for yourself. I wouldn't want younger listeners to be attracted to the songs because they are spritely tunes that are easy to enjoy, but then begin singing along without realizing what the songs are saying. Otherwise, nice choice of an artist I have not heard previously.

EDIT: Oops...totally forgot my usual "music reactions don't make a penny, so please support through Patreon, etc." I've never heard of her before. No surprise there, since I'm not the demographic that most of today's music is created for. There is some good stuff still being made, so hopefully this will be something that I enjoy. First thing I notice is that the piano intro is reminiscent of "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. The rest of the song may be in a totally different direction, though. The first bit of her singing reminds me of Kate Bush. As it progresses, the Kate Bush vibe is still there. Then she moves more into Katy Perry territory when the tempo changes. Musically, it's a bit of a throwback to earlier genres. The strings sort of remind me of parts of "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay, and of course the shred metal guitars are very late 1980s. For your question "Are they really playing the guitar?" I didn't think so, but to be sure I went to the music video where I could see it full size (rather than as just a small inset in your reaction video). I can't speak to all of it, since I only looked at the most prominent part of someone playing an Ibanez guitar on the stage. No, the finger placement does not at all match up to the notes, and I suspect the right hand is not striking the strings at all. The left hand should be much further up the neck. ("up" and "down" on a guitar neck are the opposite of what you would think - "up" is toward the body of the guitar, and "down" is closer to the headstock. It has to do with the pitches created. Higher notes are "up", and lower notes are "down," even though it looks backwards as far as physical location on the neck.) Overall, it's not bad. I probably wouldn't seek it out, but I wouldn't instantly turn the channel either. It's very similar to several earlier things, but that is probably intentional. Nothing wrong with paying tribute to your influences from time to time, as long as your entire body of work is not an imitation of them. If I happen upon some of her other songs, I'd be interested to hear what direction they take.
