His tone effects the soul. Out of all his talents, the power, the range, the vibrato, the distortion, his tone is what makes him untouchable. IMO of course.

Chris Cornell became a god post Soundgarden. I will not debate this. His 2011 Album songbook of all his songs, done live acoustically, cemented him as the greatest lead vocalist ever in my opinion. When you strip away the band, and his voice stands alone with just the soft touch of the acoustic guitar, he soars to unimageable heights.

Listen to anything from "Songbook" if you liked this, just Chris and his guitar. I was lucky enough to see him tour for this album in Detroit, Dec. 4 2011. He was set up just how you see him here. Unassuming, no rock star shit. Just a big persian rug, surrounded by guitars. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. Opened with "What's so Funny Bout Peace, Love and Understanding." He interacted with the crowd by telling a few brief stories in between songs. I have seen a lot of concerts in my life. Including Soundgarden at Lollapalooza but never a lead singer doing their thing alone, no one backing them. And you're right, the connection with him and the crowd, just a man, his voice and guitar was amazing. It was so personal (and more endearing if that's even possible) to hear him sing songs I've heard before without the extra noise of the other instruments hiding him. You could hear more of the power, pain and nuance that make him who he is. It was only a few years later we lost him, in Detroit of all places. I almost went to that concert as well but life got in the way. I wish I had gotten to see him one last time. I miss you old friend.♥️

Yes, I love the Songbook version of this song even more- it's much more raw, if that's possible! Makes me cry too much though.

Chris mentioned in interviews that just as he had to make adjustments in his technique to get the best range as he got older, he had found that reflecting emotional feelings became easier and more natural to do! The GOAT of rock singers past present and most likely the future! At his prime he had no limits, ability wise! The Stevie ray Vaughn of singers, being able to physically match his abilities with his emotions, seemingly effortlessly

It is genuinely sad to hear him sing these songs considering he is not with us anymore. I saw him in an acoustic set a year before his passing where he had requested that no alcohol he permitted during the concert. Wide awake acoustically by him is another song that will make you go holy poop. Everytime I saw him live, I was left amazed and I never got that with other artists. He was just always on and living in that moment. Even the little quick stories in-between songs had that wow feeling.

What an emotionally complex gentleman. Hindsight's 20/20, but so many of his lyrics now sound like desperate pleas for help... Tell your family and friends how much they mean to you, every chance you get. While listening, Chris Stapleton's 'Sometimes I Cry' came to mind. Would love to hear Stapleton cover some Cornell material. I believe he'd do it justice. Be Blessed, SIR!
@alext25663 жыл бұрын
I don't see them as pleas. He had access to resources. I think he dealt with it for a really long time, trying to find relief wherever he could drugs, alcohol, family. Mostly through music. He was close to that point between Euphoria Mourning and Audioslave. He seemed worn down and he definitely was on some sort of drug for the few months before his death. He was way out of it, during live performances. Perhaps his go to solaces weren't working very well anymore. No one will know for sure.
