Placido and Dimash were both judges for the classical music tv show The Virtuosos when they did this performance. Placido asked Dimash to perform a duet with him when they arrived for filming. Dimash also had fun playing the £300,000 Boganyi piano at the Ferenc Institute in Budapest whilst he was there. He's reportedly coming back for a second season and apparently Jose Carreras is also going to be a judge this year.

Thank you for your reaction. This was a dream come true for Dimash. He shared that at the age of 5, he had a VHC of a concert of Maestro Domingo and dreamed from that time to meet and work with him. I am sure that Dimash appreciated the opportunity to be a judge at the Virtuoso contest, a program that features young classical artists, at the invitation of Maestro Domingo. The others you see are the fellow judges of the program. They had only one rehearsal and on top of that, Dimash was ill. Dimash will sing only what comes from his heart. We Dears will follow him anywhere.

I am a native English speaker and we had many French singers that were popular here in the 1960s, Mirielle Mature, Johnny Halliday, Charles Aznavour, Françoise Hardy non had great English, some were very poor but it didn't matter we accepted that and still enjoyed their songs. So if Dimash isn't 100% perfect it doesn't matter, shouldn't matter. Most people speaking a foreign language keep much of their native accent and most other people find it attractive and endearing. Dimash gets so much criticism yet others, I will put Andrea Bocelli as one, never get criticism although their accent are very strong. Dimsh speaks two languages absolutely fluently Kazakh and Russian, languages from very different language groups with nothing in common, he had to learn Russian as a child. He only ever spoke Kazakh at home and school lessons were held in Russian. He only began learning English in 2017 but he learnt it from Chinese speakers. He took English lessons in Kazakhstan from 2020 but probably from Kazakh speakers. He needs better help and he should learn languages from native speakers.I think this may be why he has problems. But he sings in at least 15/16 languages that we Dears have heard, often only have a couple of days to learn the song. But, why criticism, for Dears and most listeners its the song, the interpretation, the melody, the emotion is the main thing we take from his performances and the perfection of all the different languages is not important. His language skills do improve and often in subsequent performances he alter it accordingly but reactors keep getting these older recordings to react to, and some like to pick him apart. Thank you Ken for not doing that. Dimash is so crazy busy in his career that we forget that through all of it he is still a student, he will finish his PhD shortly and has been studying music from 5 years to his current 30 years of age. His studies will never stop though, he improves his voice and knowledge constantly and always will strive for his perfection.

@RedCnMn 2 ай бұрын
Maybe you don't care as much about language, but there are people who want to understand what is being sung. So if someone criticizes a singer for having poor articulation, then it's justified. In this case, your argument "he had to learn it in one day" is completely fine but still... Some people (mostly people who aren't as knowledgeable in music related stuff) have a hard time to experience emotion when they don't understand the words. Just my opinion but you shouldn't bash others (I know you didn't bash him here, but you were talking about others) just because they have different tastes or think differently about whats important for music to be tugging at your heart strings.

@@RedCnMn I go to the opera on a regular basis since childhood, and most opera singers who sing in languages not native to them have pronunciation issues and make linguistic mistakes. That's why we usually rely on the captions. Never heard a word of criticism about.

@DiaLinwen
@DiaLinwen 2 ай бұрын
@@RedCnMn Most singers sing in one or two languages at most. Opera is probably the only genre where you consistently hear singers sing in languages they don't speak. Dimash is unique in that regard because he comes from both worlds, he is not some mainstream artist whose music is for everybody Most Dimash's fans don't speak or understand most of the languages he sings in but they can relate and feel everything because, as they say, music is a universal language, and Dimash speaks that language perfectly well. Those who don't can just find the singers who sing perfectly in whatever languages they sing in, there are enough of them to go around. It's just not realistic to expect him to pronounce all languages well if he has no natural propensity and talent for that.
@RedCnMn
@RedCnMn 2 ай бұрын
@@DiaLinwen I completely get that. I still go back to my first comment about how some people can't feel the emotion without the lyrics, or at least not as strongly. Yeah dimash fans don't care about the language and I also don't. But I'm still making a point for people who need lyrics for the best experience. And that's why no one should hate a singer for bad pronunciation - and no one should hate someone for just criticizing bad pronunciation. These are completely different things (at least in my opinion)

Many bel canto teachers have verified that Dimash brings a cross interpretation between rigid classical singing (which must follow norms and exactly as the author of the piece wrote, from the notes and durations, the portamentos, the expressiveness... Everything) and much more popular flexibility. For purists, let's remember that Dimash had the dream of singing with Plácido Domingos since he was a child and it was the Maestro himself, Don Domingos, who suggested the duet (he knew that even with classical training, Dimash would sing as a cross between classical and pop )! Dimash only had one day to remember the work and make the recording, as this moment is part of the competition (like a talent show) for children with musical talent: The “Virtuosos”! Dimash, as well as Placido Domingos, were part of the Jury, accompanied by Erika Miklósa (opera singer), Adrás Keller (violinist, conductor and musical director of the Budapest Concert), Hauser (cellist), Plácido Domingos Jr. (singer and composer), Pablo Sanz Villegas (classical guitarist), Gabriela Rachid (cultural director) and Harvey Goldsmith (music promoter)! The show was in Budapest (Hungary) from January 16th to 26th this year, 2024!

They had only hours between deciding to do this and actually performing it. This was more about making Dimash's lifelong dream to sing with Domingo come true (and Domingo's request to sing a duet with Dimash) than it was about creating a perfect vocal performance. It came off beautifully in spite of that.

Dimash WAS offered a post in the Astana Opera just out of his university graduation, but he turned it down to pursue his own musical path. None of us would have gotten to know him, if he stayed and sang tenor in Astana Opera. Think about that. Dimash is so much more than just an opera singer. Oh, and supposedly, not only did the both of them only had a day or so to practice this piece, Dimash had a bit of a cold, and yet he sang so beautifully.

Hey Ken, in your spare time you should look at this program it's called Virtuosos and was last year's event. Each year it showcases very young musician prodigies. The entire show was just amazing! There were people in the audience but I don't know why they were sitting back so far. The people you noticed with coffee cups were some of the judges. Two of those seats were empty during this performance! 😉 Dimash just arrived and met Domingo the day before. At that meeting Placido told Dimash he wanted to do a duet with him. So they only had that afternoon to put it together. Somebody did take some video of their meeting and Dimash did seem to have a cough. Some say he really was fighting a cold. You are correct that he probably was holding back some, if for no other reason, to take care not to irritate his voice enough to make him cough!!😅 I just love listening to you review Dimash! Dimash is highly considerate of anyone he sings with and this is no exception. Even without his full voice, Dimash has such an incredibly diverse voice that shows so many textures and timbres. I agree his pronunciation was a bit off, but for a 24 hour learning curve I wouldn’t complain. Dimash was offered the opportunity to pursue opera as a tenor in his late teens/early twenties and chose his current path for the diversity and interest of different genres of music. To be fair, I read that this piece was a last-minute choice for the show. Dimash and Placido were judges for a televised competition. So he didn’t have much time to work with anyone on diction, and I think his Khazakh accent is pretty difficult to overcome. As for the rushed tempo, again they were on a show, so they only had x amount of time for the piece. I also gather they only had a day or so to rehearse this. I think it’s brilliant that they sounded so amazing. I love the way Placido let Dimash lead-and Dimash, who has idolized this man all his life, must have been terrified. I agree that Dimash could’ve taken the opera world by storm, but I think it would have been way too limiting for him. He’d have been cast in tenor roles-forget the fact that he could sing ALL the parts in pretty much ANY opera. I do love his classical sound, though. That’s what really gives me goosebumps. Have you checked out his “When I’ve Got You” video-very contemporary, and great contrast to this. He sounds amazing in that as well. Great reaction, Ken!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with tempo, phrasing or whatever. Given the fact that Dimash is a Kazakhstan and not French, having to learn this song and perform this song within 24hrs, singing it along with one the world's greatest and renowned singers... My goodness, who else but Dimash to pull this off! This young man is stupendously brilliant. This is why Placido was 100% confident in his invitation to Dimash. I am pretty sure that any subtle changes to the delivery of the song must have come from Placido himself during their brief rehearsals. Nevertheless, I followed your comments closely and with much interest. A very worthy and valued reaction. Thank you.

Dimash himself said that as much as he likes opera it feels to strict and restrictive for him as he likes to experiment and operatic singing does not allov that. He was offered a place at the Kazakh National Opera House when he was still an teenager but he reclined. There was a running joke at the beginning of Dimash's career that he could sing all parts of an opera by himself except the bass... Not true anymore as he since then extended his lower range so much that he could cover the bass as well 😅. The thought is absolutely mindblowing crazy but I would love to hear it!

👉 The world stands still for this moment and everyone holds their breath. A singing teacher calls them the two musical titans...yes, yes, yes! This duet was Dimash's dream and it is coming true. What an honor for our beloved Dimash and a great joy for Maestro Domingo…. And I was bathed in tears of joy. I'm sooo happy. Dimash was asked to participate as a judge in the competition for young classical musicians... and then... he gave us dear ones this wonderful jewel. Maestro Domingo invited Dimash to sing the duet with him the day before. Dimash only had a short night to learn this song in French... and besides, Dimash had a cold with a cough. (You notice it more clearly in the second song at the end of the concert.) Dimash would never act recklessly towards his duet partners. With good manners and respect, he would never drown out Maestro Domingo (then still 82) with his voice. He even adapts to Maestro Domingo's vocal color. Dimash opens a new world to many Dears... the world of classical music. You should definitely watch the video (look at the end of the comment)... so many young, talented musicians and the sensitive assessment of the jurors... Great!!! ... and the legendary duet of Maestro Domingo and Dimash Qudaibergen! The duet is about two fisherman friends. They see a beautiful new priestess in the village and they both fall in love with her.The two friends vow not to let any woman come between them. * Plácido Domingo (*1941 Madrid/Spain) is already a legend today. He is a world-renowned, versatile artist and is considered one of the best and most influential singers in opera history, with more than 150 roles and over 4,000 performances celebrated by audiences on stages around the world. He sings tenor and baritone and was one of the three tenors with Carreras and Pavarotti in the 90s. Maestro Domingo is also a conductor and promoter of young talent, winner of 12 Grammy Awards and recipient of honorary degrees and awards for his humanitarian work. I really like this performance but I would be remissed if I did not mention how beautiful that Harpist is playing. Lastly Dimash's voice here reminds me of his performance of the Kazakhstan National Anthem. His voice is deep and powerful in it. A must watch for any Earthling currently residing on this orb.

Hello Ken Lavigne, thank you for your reaction to this fantastic duet.🙋🏻‍♀💝 I would like to answer your question about our opinion: first of all - English is not my native language … so please forgive me, if there are any strange expressions or mistakes 🙈. For me it is clear - I definitely do not want to see Dimash in the opera - I enjoy it, when he does performances like this - individual classical pieces... but I especially like it, when he puts his own touch or `breathes his own life` into them. I prefer neo-classical crossover, as Dimash himself calls it. The opera world is too strict for Dimash in my opinion. He, with his immense skills and his free musical spirit, would be too constrained and we, we Dears, would lose all the wonderful interpretations, embellishments, extras or whatever you want to call them. I have to say that I am not an opera lover and don't like to watch an opera in its entirety... I have tried it a few times in the past (although only on TV or the Internet - to see it live in an opera house would be a different experience, I think), but I wasn't impressed - it was too long-winded - I only liked the famous arias within the opera... But that's just my taste, of course. However, there are also events, where only these individual well-known opera arias are sung, gala events, etc., which I prefer. Then it depends on the choice of song and the voice of the singer whether I like it. I also like Dimash's traditional Kazakh songs and his pop songs or rock elements, jazzy moments (scat), rap parts… He has sung some new pieces recently, which I think are gorgeous. And I love him vocalizing, like in his „Ave Maria”, but also just passages: found in "Know", in "The Story of One Sky", in "This Love" ... (new OST for Jackie Chan's film "Legend")... I love his ballads, in which he sings a lot with his breathy voice, soft as butter and like velvet... he doesn't need difficult pieces or extreme notes to captivate me ... but I don't say "no" when he uses them. I even enjoy him using distortion here and there, though I don't like it with other singers, and especially not when a singer has a rough voice per se. Just my taste. Dimash`s versatility, his temperament, his passion, his willingness to experiment (relentless searching for new creativity), his "rebellious way" 😉of not letting anyone tell him how to sing something just because it's always been done that way before ... you can just tell how much he loves music in all its facets - he LIVES music. And he uses his art to advocate for positive values, such as togetherness, unity, friendly coexistence, mutual acceptance... world peace ☮... ultimately for universal love 💖 Dimash is also a wonderful, passionate performer, as he has just proven once again in his last two big concerts, which took place on two consecutive days, in his hometown, the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. In general, I think about him... leave him alone (let him do what he wants to do)… don't expect him to go in this or that direction... because things always turn out differently... Finally - Dimash is always good for a surprise. Warm greetings from Germany 🙋🏻‍♀🤗💞

I agree with you, Dimash would pulverise the world's opera stages from Salzburg, Vienna, Verona to NY. There is an interview with Zarina Altynbayeva by Alga Kazakhstan. She is a soloist with the Astana Opera House who thinks that Dimash should and hopes would ultimately return to opera/Astana. There is a super performance with her and Dimash of "Question of Honour." I totally understand his initial refusal to focus on opera because with his vast register, power, clarity of tone and performance skills he rightly saw opera as limiting. I'd love to hear him sing Queen of the Night (he practically has already)... it would only be fitting since Mozart wrote for Castrati and at the time female characters were often performed by males and vice versa, similar to Chinese opera. After pop superstardom he might well return to his true musical roots. And, he is young enough to enjoy an illustrious career in that genre. I'm from Salzburg and would love to see him perform here (though capacity of the Festspielhaus is a mere 2600~). But some of my snobby opera friends from the old guard say that he wouldn't have the vocal capacity to fill the room without a microphone....I say balderdash! I have since watched the great opera stars perform outside normal/small opera venues and concert halls, and they've been using microphones for decades, eg, Hvorostovsky, Kaufmann, Pavarotti, Montserrat Caballe, the three tenors etc. I think that Montserrat and Freddie performed Barcelona without mics (must check).

Placido requested the duet and Dimash only had 2 days to learn and rehearse so I think this is pretty fabulous a job. They were both judges at an event for talented children. THe people at the table are the other judges. I think Dimash was holding back so as not to overpower one of his childhool idols - Placido.

I think the opera world would only truly accept Dimash if he dedicated the majority of his time in that realm. I'm afraid that's not going to happen because he believes in singing and performing as many different musical styles and languages as he can. Also Dimash only had one day to learn this piece including the rehearsal. I highly recommend that you react to an amazing singer from the UK, 20 year old Lucy Thomas. Many reactors have said that she has the most beautiful female voice in the world. I'd be very interested in your analysis.

They are performing for fun at a conpetition for young musicains so they are there really to be judges. Dimash is heaven. Placido forgot some lyrics at times I think he is reading them. Honestly everyone Dimash would be disappointed by all the negative comments. Dimash is not perfect, he would not have issues with Ken’s comments. Dimash’s French is not perfect. Though him having only a day to learn this song of course helps make it difficult for him being a non native speaker. In saying that I find any language in Opera doesn’t come out exactly right. Though Dimash would definitely have to work on it if he wanted to sing Opera. His Italian is far better. Nothing said by Ken was mean or diminished Dimash’s talent. It is a reaction video, it is his reaction to a piece he obviously knows well. If you don’t want to hear honest reactions then go to only channels that make exaggerated faces and noises. Ken obviously enjoyed his voice and also felt Dimash could make a wonderful living in Opera so the nasty comments are ridiculous.

@@barbarasaracini1271 opinions may be valid. But being impolite and down right rude to a reactor is not valid. Dimash certainly wouldn’t thank anyone for that. He advocates peace and respecting other’s differences. That would include Ken’s thoughts on the performance. Nothing he said was rude. He expressed his thoughts in a respectful way. Obviously, he knows the piece and has his own thoughts on how it was performed. That didn’t take away from his obvious enjoyment of Dimash’s voice. Which he expressed numerous times throughout.

He wanted to have the freedom to experiment and that was just not possible in opera. Because he still loves it, he chose to mix classical and modern styles in his music.

My friend, Saudi music has not changed significantly because the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was never colonized, so the culture has remained largely unchanged over the years, without being influenced by other cultures. There are two types of music: modern and traditional. But let me take you on a journey through the traditional. In the Arabian Peninsula before Islam, poetry was one of the most important historical elements, preserving history and stories over the years. Arabs were famous for memorizing and passing down poetry, and of course, writing poetry was extremely difficult. The number of poets was very limited due to the difficulty of writing it, with many rules, almost like musical scales, with specific rhythms and rhyme schemes. Poetry in Saudi Arabia varied from region to region in its structure and rhythm. Each area had its own unique rhythm and dialect. Before wars or occasions like weddings and celebrations, members of the tribes would gather and sing songs that matched the surrounding circumstances. For example, before battles, they would sing songs with frightening words, boasting of their bravery, strength, and history. Hold on, hold on-I know I’m talking about music, but you need to understand this context to grasp the rest, haha! In times of peace, they would write and sing poems about love or separation. In most countries, music is composed before the lyrics are written, and the melody takes precedence over the words. However, in Saudi Arabia, it's the opposite. The lyrics are written first, followed by the melody. This often makes it very difficult for the composer to match the music to the words, and even the singer finds it hard to pronounce and sing some of the lyrics. If you have a map of Saudi Arabia, you'll notice that the Eastern region has more than six different dialects and three distinct singing styles. Their songs are usually filled with joy, love, and longing, influenced by the sea and maritime life. The central region, on the other hand, is a desert area with a history of conflicts and harsh living conditions, so the lyrics are strong, often talking about betrayal and treachery. The Western region, being coastal and home to the city of Mecca, has a wide variety of musical styles, reflecting the influence of pilgrims from around the world. The Northern region, with its tough terrain and challenging life, has sad songs about separation, longing, and memories. The Southern region is agricultural, and its music is characterized by soft, sweet lyrics and accompanied by distinctive dances. When listening to Saudi songs, you must pay attention to the lyrics, because the melody is part of the words, and you won’t fully understand the music without understanding the lyrics. Some of the most famous Saudi singers include Talal Maddah, Mohammed Abdu, Abadi Al-Johar, Rashed Al-Majed, Abdul Majeed Abdullah, and Rabeh Saqer. You will definitely notice differences in their singing styles since each comes from a different region. I'll tell you more about each of these singers and their best songs another time. Your channel is fantastic, and your musical ear is truly impressive. I love following your content! 🎉❤

I am French and to be honest as I had never heard the song before they sang it together I had no idea that it was in French and it took me a while to actually realise that it was!
