Hey, here’s your Wikipedia guy :3 (Ofc, critics spot on, as usual but WHO AM I to judge (you know what I’m referring to.)) First of all: it’s pronounced Vilya leed (as in ‘breed’). Das Lied in German means ‘song’ (the romantic Lieder cycles, you had these when you studied) and it’s from Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow. So, to give you an overview: Beste Zangers is a Dutch TV show in which you have different singers from different backgrounds. In each episode one of them gets in the spotlight and the others sing their renditions of the songs from either this person’s repertoire or ones they find being meaningful for the star of the night. That episode was dedicated to the bald guy - Henk Poort, an opera singer. Ironically enough, Floor wasn’t that much known in the Netherlands before the show because - as she admitted - bands like Nightwish aren’t that mainstream (ironically enough, the Netherlands also exported the other music titan - Within Temptation). She was also a bit stressed because she said, from what I remember, she never performed opera professionally in front of another person from that field. Well. Here we have it. No bingo tonight ;)

Floor was singing the aria Vilja Lied from the operetta The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár, an Austro-Hungarian composer (1870-1948). She was singing it to Henk Poort, a famous Dutch opera and musical singer, sitting on the middle couch. It was Henk's day on the TV-show, so the other singers there performed songs to him. Floor was singing in German, though she doesn't speak it.

Great reaction. Floor opened the first episode and closed the last episode. At this point none of the others, apart from Tim Akkerman (Target T-Shirt), knew anything about Floor. All they knew was that she was a metal singer in a symphonic metal band. They even admitted to having to google what symphonic metal was! Tim had met her years earlier, but even he was unaware of what she was capable of vocally. Hence all the surprised looks on all the other singers' faces. Can you imagine having to follow that?!! I think you are going to love all 8 of Floor's performances and be very pleasantly surprised by her versatility!

Henk had a clue, as he had done a bit of googling of her, but it was more reputation then. I guess he didn't see her do Puccini, because he wondered if any of them would be brave and do any opera. Floor and Ruben did, though, and both did great in their own ways. Tim yeah, knew she was good, but yeah, she knocked their socks off, and he was flabbergasted. They hadn't been around one anther much for a while.

The commenters here are correct; only Henk Poort and Tim Akkerman knew who Floor was. Theynotheard her sing until she sang this song. You could tell by their faces how shocked they were. Poort was just delighted by what he was hearing because she was using her opera voice in her high octave. Emma Heesters is the rock singer but she made Floor tear up when she sang 'Strong', a song Floor wrote about her mother's constant illnesses throughout her life. Samantha Steenwijk has a beautiful voice in Mezzo. Henk was the original Dutch Phantom which you will hear when he sings POTO with Floor.

You must be a Monty Python fan? This is an aria from "The Merry Widow" sung in German. This was the first time all of these well known Dutch singers had heard Floor. All they knew was that she was this tatooed heavy metal chick. Next up is Mama, which Floor sings in Dutch. Each week all of the singers pay tribute to one singer. They sing their songs or songs which influenced them for the singer being honored. This one was for Henk Poort, the older man who is an opera singer. His mother used to sing this song to him as a young boy. Floor killed it and added what she calls "a rocky vibe". Every week Floor reinvents herself to sing in all of the different genres that each singer represents. You are going to be amazed at the versatility of this incredibly talented woman. All singers prepared their songs in advance for the show (Tim pretty much said so in the first episode), so they had to be somewhat familiar with each others work before the show was recorded.

Better late than never with the Beste Zangers footage, but Im always happy to see reactions to Floors stint on the show :)....i think youre in for good fun with these if youre working your way through all of them, and god help you when you get to the performance of Phantom of the opera with Floor...its pretty feckin' special :) Also, just to let you know, Nightwish brought out a brand new song just today, its called Noise and its seriously, seriously good and well worth checking out too :)

This is a show of singers from the Netherlands where she is from.. They are all singers from different styles of music and backgrounds. This week was Hank Poort, he is a classical singer.. The others are going to pick a song that, this singer has sung, written or in some way very personal to the subject performer that is what they call "on the couch" this week. They know of Floor somewhat, and with her world wide popularity even though she is basically unknown in the Netherlands. Medal is not popular in the Netherlands like it is in Finland or Germany. The singers will learn about the subject performer that's "on the couch" and find a song that is very special to them, and sing it for them live on the tv show. Floor does many types of music, different genres, in different languages, but with floor she usually changes up the original song just a bit to make it her own.. As you'll see as you go thru the episodes, she really gets to show off her amazing versatility..

Thank you for this reaction, Sam. Floor is such a joy to listen to. Chronologically, Mama would be next, sung for Samantha, her song. She sung Vilja Lied for Henk because of his opera background, and because his mother (also an opera singer) used to sing this song to him as a child. Cheers!

It's fun that you mention the intimate setting, as when Floor sat down after performing, the host asked her how she liked doing this compared to singing in a stadium. She said, "I prefer the stadium." Haha

True for most, bigger the stage the easier it is to perform. Your gaze can just kinda go over everyone and you have your own space, but with these smaller and more intimate spaces you can't really just gaze over the few people watching.

You should watch the full episode as you get a better idea of the concept as to why each song is sung. In this episode they were singing songs for henk poort an opera singer. Henks mother used to sing this for henks father.

I loved your enthusiasm for the smaller setup, it really makes Floor shine bright. I'm looking forward to the next videos. The entire episodes were translated by Denise Hoffs. They're really fun to watch because you also get to understand why they chose these songs and what the response was from the singer of that weeks centre stage. I believe due to copyright reasons Denise had to move the videos to another place but you'll find them easily if you just look for her on KZbin.

Episode 4 is Floor's episode so they all sing to her. I'd suggest for that episode, if you don't skip it, that you'd react to Emma Heesters sing Floor's song "Strong". Not only is it a BEAUTIFUL song, but it is beautifully sung by Emma who is a young KZbin covers artist. You'll soon notice as well, the Marcel Fisser Band, the "Beste Zangers" house (tent?) band, is amazing. Floor brought them on her post Beste Zangers solo tour last month.

I hope you take a look at a few of the other singers on the show - they’re all pretty great and have something unique about them. In particular, Tim Akkerman performs Nightwish’s “Nemo” for Floor, and Henk Poort performs “Sound of Silence” in the style of Disturbed, again for Floor. Lots of other good ones as well.

the "fun" part is that Floor was not well known in the Netherlands and i think most of the singers realy don't knew nightwish. In the show when the meet eachother and learn about eachother that was the point for most of them ooohhh Floor is the vocalist of Nightwish ok and who is nightwish, now Floor is wel known in the Netherlands and it's about time i hope the radio stations are waking up too

One thing I would like to prime you to notice before you get to those songs is that Floor had been developing her ability to constantly vary aspects of her vocal configuration during this period, and it really shows in her renditions of Que Se Siente and I Don't Know A Thing About Love. In both songs she's almost constantly changing various parts of her vocal configuration throughout the whole duration of the song, and it gives a really interesting effect to songs that otherwise would have relatively simple vocal structures.

Vilja is a very famous aria by composer Franz Lehár. You always have to study at conservatorium as classical singer. Standard. It is in German. I am surprised you don't know it.But that's why this is fun.

Floor is amazing. She can sing just about anything and not look bothered, even songs written for previous singers with very different vocal colours. I haven't seen this whole show, but you're in for a great duet in the future. If you don't mind a novel of a post... I'd really like to drop a recommendation for Jonghyun, the main vocalist of the legendary second-generation Kpop group SHINee (they debuted in 2008), solo artist, lyricist, composer (including EXO's Playboy), radio show host, published novelist, former bassist... you get the idea. I think he had the most distinct collection of vocal colours in the industry, and that's a popular opinion. (He tragically died in 2017, but I didn't mention it up front because his fans would rather focus on the fact that he lived.) This is an acoustic version of a song from his first solo album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqWvhYWLhdB4hZI. It shows off a lot of the features of his voice, but not everything he could do. That can't be contained in one song. He's also covering the rap part that had a featured artist on the original, and he does a pretty faithful Zion.T take. You can tell how much he loved jazz. If you like that, I'd recommend a compilation of some of his live vocals over the years: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4DZYpuEjJKEf5Y. It's a bit long, but better than the shorter ones I've seen. There's a clip of him doing a duet with EXO's Chen, who, IIRC, was very nervous to sing with a senior artist and vocal legend he looked up to. And you know how good Chen is. I also highly recommend SHINee. They're famous for experimental Kpop, live performances, and diverse vocals that are top-tier in the industry. Thank you for reading if you got through that, lol.

Floor' performances on Beste Zangers (you pronounced it correctly) will be even better. The first two are actually my least favorites. Still enjoyed it, but "About love I don't know a thing" had everyone in tears, "Que Se Siente" surprised everyone, and "Winner" and "Phantom" are just amazing.

Your the tea pot guy... Most likely you don't understand Dutch, or in the case of this song German... English, Anglo-Saxon originates from these same European tribes, just to let you know.
