English translation of lyrics. Floor started singing the 5th line. But now let's do as we do at home Let's sing our ring dance rhyme About a fairy known whom at home we call Vilja! Once lived a Vilja, a maid of the woods, And hunter spotted her in rocky outcroppings! The young boy, who was Affected curiously by her presense, He looked and looked at the wood-maiden. And a shudder the boy had never known Took hold of him, Longingly he began quietly to sigh! Vilja, oh Vilja, you maid of the woods, Take me and let me be your dearest true love! Vilja, O Vilja what are you doing to me? Begs a lovesick man! The maid of the woods stretched her hand to him And pulled him into her rocky home. The boy nearly lost all his sense And so she loved him and kissed him as no earthly child. When she kissed him to his content She disappeared in an instant! The hunter waved goodbye only once before she vanished: Vilja, oh Vilja, you maid of the woods, Take me and let me be your dearest true love! Vilja, O Vilja what are you doing to me? Begs a lovesick man!

I loved your reference to Linda Ronstadt, she was my favourite until Floor matched her. Linda is not that often reacted to by knowledgeable vocalists. Would you consider doing some of Linda's songs showing her diversity and from all-out belting (It's so Easy, Different Drum and Get Closer) to very small and intimate (Bleu Bayou, Willing '77 Atlanta and many other songs) and Pirates of Penzance?

Great reacton again, thank you very much. Another female singer who can navigate between different styles is Simone Simons. She is singer of the dutch symphonic metalband Epica. Epica actually was formed after Mark Jansen (no relatives to Floor) left Floor's first band After Forever. Simone became singer and is very good friends with Floor, in fact Simone had singinglessons from Floor. I would recommend you to listen to Sancta Terra, live from the Retrospectshow, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In this song Floor is guest and you can hear both singers change from breast to headvoice in one breath and go back in one breath. In this Retrospect show, you can also see the orchestra, that Epica did de original recording with. Usually the orchestral parts are prerecorded, but in this show they were also live. Sancta Terra was played at the end of the show and a good listener can hear that Simone is getting a bit out of breath, but also keep in mind that she was 3 or 4 months pregnant at this performance. Enjoy this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mamVY4yrn5ehsMk Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year! Greetings Dolf

Floor's versatility is what fascinates me the most, especially that she can switch between extremes within the same song, like on "Wildcard", from her previous band ReVamp, where she goes from opera to extreme metal within a few breaths of each other. This "classically trained" label has become a bit of an overused promotional buzzword that does not always mean the same thing When I think of classic training, I think of studying and graduating from a conservatory. Floor studied for 4 years at Dutch Rock Academy, an all-round music and music business education for pop and rock musicians, apparent equivalent of BA in Music. While at Rock Academy, there was a guest lecturer from conservatory, which inspired her to take some conservatory classes, part-time. Also part-time she studied musical theater. All of this she was doing in parallel with her growing career with After Forever, so she had the applied side down. This is great training and experience, but is it really "classical"? Floor did this interview a just before she joined Nightwish, and among other things, she talks about her education and her early vocal influences. Thought you may find it interesting - crypticrock.com/interview-floor-jansen-of-revamp-nightwish/

This was the very first performance of the first episode of Best Zangers with this cast. No one new Floor because Nightwish is Finnish, and also, the metal scene out in the Netherlands isn't as huge as it is on Finland either. No one in that room knew who Floor was and didn't really expect her voice since she's known for metal music. Floor was fan girling when she found out that Poort was going to be there as well. If you have time you should watch the show in order, they others are really great as well. Not only that but there's stories behind everything that the others sing for. Hello Christi - like every time I can only praise you again for the quality of your reaction. To the appearance of Floor - it was her first during this event - the ice was noticeably present before. As noted under one of your previous contributions to this show, each of her performances actually deserves a reaction video - she shows a different facet of her diamond at each of her performances. Yes - in my eyes she is a diamond, a gift to humanity and at the moment one of the best singers on this planet, solar system, universe... btw - did you actually notice how she always collects herself in the transitions between the rock and classical parts? -- You can really see it in her eyes, the way she concentrates...

I think she’s mentioned she didn’t like the amount of constraints on style and expression usually associated with being an opera singer. However, Floor being an extremely intelligent individual and dedicated to being the best singer she can be, she could see the value receiving training in the technique.

Hi, it is the other way around, she was one of the first students of the first rockacademie in the Netherlands, while she was already performing in her first metal band After Forever, for which she also wrote the material. She didn't find what she was looking for vocally at that academie until she was in a masterclass from a musical arts/opera vocal teacher. She did her classical training after and hasn't stopped training her voice, she calls herself a "voice-geek" interested in different techniques. @The Voice Love Co: singing with distortion was the first time Henk ever did (for Floor) and at the show was the first time he and Floor met. Btw, I love the love many of the voice coaches like you have for the Beste Zangers , although I must admit that I also started watching the show when I knew Floor was going to be in it. Hello Christie and a most beloved happy holiday to you and yours from me and mine! Floor is great and versatile. Always a treat when you feature her. Another vocalist that I think I recommended to you awhile back is also versatile, she goes by her first name EIVOR . She has a unique voice and when she sings with her band , she ( they) sound a bit like symphonic metal. She can do Opera, too. And Pop. But the song I would like you to react to when the opportunity presents itself is from the Faroe island ( her native domicile )and when she gives a performance virtually the whole island of about 600 show up. She has an angelic voice so unique , so mystical , so magical, so entrancing so hauntingly beautiful : “Eivor trollabundin” ( first vid 5:44 duration). ( from the Faroe Islands and trollabundin meaning ‘spellbound’ and all who watch this amazing.video in her native language will be spellbound.). Wish I was there outdoors sitting with the audience. The island’s backdrop scenery of mountains and rivers are interspersed and breathtakingly beautiful and I wish I could have booked a plane and been there sitting among those lucky island fans. And here are 2 with her band at full force and emotionally impactful remarkable live performances: ~ “Eivor Wake me Up” ( 7: 11 duration) it’s in English and she kills it with celestial high notes and emotional impact. It’s about her longing to wake up from this earthy dream and reunite with a lover that left her and she longs to return to a place lit by heartfelt memories ( and oh boy does her voice scale the ethereal heights). This vocalist has already become one of my favorite female vocalists. And I just discovered her about 6 months ago. How on God’s earth did i ever overlook this world class vocalist. Watch the drummer go crazzzyyy. ~ Eivor “falling free” again in English ( the one that’s 6:47 duration. It’s on the island but inside I believe a restaurant seating capacity ( when the camera panned the audience) probably 300 lucky souls to witnessed this beyond amazing performance. She put it on KZbin about 3 years ago and very few views and likes. If she performed it in America and there were 50,000 in attendance , all 50,000 would be screaming and yelling for a long time during and after the performance. The strobe lightening, camera angles, her otherworldly vocal all combine to make this rendition memorable. At the end she sustains a phrase that is heavenly. Now for “ Lord Of The Rings” fans: KZbin “Evior may it be “ ( Lord of the Rings) in a palatial setting in front of thousands with full orchestra and the Queen of Denmark!! ( at the end of this amazing performance the camera pans to the balcony and the Queen Of Denmark clapping. Incredible, mystical, celestial , will transport you to a higher realm). Again, the happiest of holiday greetings. All love and (((hugs))) Al

Since you have mixed lighting (appears to be a combination of tungsten and window light) your camera keeps flipping back and forth as it tries to determine the correct white balance. You need to set the camera to a fixed white balance to keep it from flipping back and forth. BTW, Floor is always relaxed in her singing and she coached Henk in how to use distortion. :)

Hello Christi. Love your reactions. You're talking about Floor singing so releaxed; check out her version of Oh Holy Night in Finnish. The title is "oi jouluyö". You can find several video's but personally I think the video that shows Floor being pregnant is the most impressive. Kind regards from The Netherlands

The most versatile? You should watch Maria Fiselier in Beste Zangers 2018. She is an opera singer who rapped in the series. She studied the rap as if it was an opera song. And sings P.Y.T. of Micheal Jackson.

Translated Lyrics. But now let's do as we do at home Let's sing our ring dance rhyme About a fairy known whom at home, we call Vilja! Once lived a Vilja, a maid of the woods, And hunter spotted her in rocky outcroppings! The young boy, who was Affected curiously by her presence, He looked and looked at the wood-maiden.

This piece is usually sung far too seriously by opera singers. The merry widow is telling a naughty story, after all. There is another that sings metal or opera, Eric Adams, probably the best and most influential american singer you never heard. Try these KZbin videos Manowar Best Crowd Ever (metal anthem Heart of Steel live) and Manowar - Nessun Dorma - HQ (there's a lovely version live at gods of metal, but the audio is poor). Also check out André Matos, Shaman Fairy Tale live to see a master metal singer, a classically trained pianist and a master composer all in one. And there's Tarja Turunen, the original Nightwish singer, better opera singer than Floor, not quite as versatile. Finally, Tim Akkerman got to Henk as much as Floor with his Breng hem thuis.

I hope Nightwish will bring out a record. Interesting she sang the orginal german vocals. Jansen is - no doubt - a musical theatre woman. I hope she will do more in this direction - she does a but with her friend Simone Simons in metal opera. Jansen is a vocalist swiss knife. I hope we gonna see more cross genre artistes, some simply do not dare to do so - there are some metal heads and goths people in the opera business, but it seems risky for them to do both. It is well known that Anna Prohaska is a friend and fan of Rammstein, and her brother also has got some Rock/Metal experience - this is a fine thing in musical, because he uses that. Besides that, we have a trend in some popular music genres back to the 90ies to a more classical voice and the use of extended voice techniques. And I think we need some kind of "mid" culture, that was operetta in the 19th and early 20th century (also opera was sometimes considered more as entertainment than is is today) A lot of modern musicals are actually just a business model with low end compositions.

What do you think about the Epica front Lady Simone Simmons (friend of Floor), Anneke van Giersbergen or Dianne van Giersbergen. Imo they all that versatile and able to handle all kind of music. But the most important of all, they love singing first.

I have heard this song (and much more of "Franz Lehár") many times. I normally understand a bit more than 66 Percent of the words (me being German), but with Floor it goes down below 33 Percent. She's giving a "Floor-Normal" performance, what means she shows almost supernatural ability. She is a goddess and I really don't care about her butchering most words :D. (And normally I care A LOT about such things.)

As a german who does not listen to opera and operetta on a regular basis, I listened to a classical version and did not understand half it, and in this version I can count the understandable words on my fingers. Problem seems to be the genre itself, as it sounds like it's made for a legato language and german is not legato in any shape or form. But i heard that even italians need the lyrics for italian opera to get the full experience, so I think, i'm in good company ;)

Oh, THANK YOU. I'm not the only one. The first word I understood was "Felsengestein". Later, when I listened repeatedly, I understood also "Waldmägdelein", but the words in between? No way! To be honest nevertheless I like this song more than Phantom of the opera. This is absolutely mind blowing. Love it. And a BIG SALUTE to the composer of this masterpiece, Franz Lehár.

@@alexjerichow2715 Right. I say "less than 33 Percent" means: Her vocals make much more sense than f.e. the "Bildzeitung". It's alright for someone who doesn't speak German.

It's the same when she sings in spanish, I'm from Mexico and couldn't understand half of what she said, I think she's only comfortable singing in english, but she sings so well in other languages even when you can't understand her 100%
