@@tsmartin but would you listen to it in it's operatic form now? It's part of why I like covers of songs, you get to here a song in style that is comfortable to your ear. ie metal and then it might make you track down the original and expand your musical taste. Sound of Silence is a classic example. At the school I work at some of the kids new the Pentatonix version that I played and one kid stuck his hand up and said but that is a Disturbed song and so we played that version and then I said well actually it is a sonf from the 1960s by Simon and Garfunkel and we played their version and then a few of the kids go and discover they really like Simon and Garfunkel music because of this little journey. Good music is good music - Henk Poort Beste Zangers!

This was the first song she sang on Beste Zangers. Most of the other singers had no real idea what to expect and you can see the shock on their faces. At this point they had no clue how astoundingly versatile she is.

They were all surprised over and over again during the season because they didn't have high expectations from a metal singer. Partly due to not knowing her background and the general dismissiveness towards metal. Even tho it has the highest number of classically trained musicians, outside of classical music.

I think this is probably the first time any of the other performers on this show ever heard of Floor Jansen, let alone heard her perform. I love the look of shock on their faces as they encounter the Goddess. A look that remains throughout the entire series. What a great gift to humanity Floor has become. 🕉🙏🏻❤️. You can go through the rest of the Beste Zangers series. There’s not that many, and it’s convenient to see the weekly progression of wonder & amazement. Then back to Nightwish. 😉

Yeah, sadly, most of them had never heard her name. Or if they had, they had a sort of low viewpoint upon finding out that she is a Metal singer... Metal and Rock are looked down on over there. That's why Floor had to go completely outside her own country in order to get respect as a Metal singer. It's really sad that an entire nation can be so closed-minded. Korea is the same way. Lately it is relaxing a little bit about Metal (Thank You Dreamcatcher!) but it really has not been much of a thing over there.

Also, I think this was the FIRST song of the season. The bar was set. :) Henk's mother used to sing this to him when he was a young boy. That's why he teared up.

@@flavio_spqr Actually, you can watch yourself! Denise Hofs has uploaded all episodes ot this season with English subtitles on her channel. Some videos are in here YT but some episodes got blocked so bad so she had to upload episodes to another streaming service.

Floor has mentioned occasionally in interviews that she finds the traditional rules of opera singing too restrictive for her taste. For example, in the last couple of years she has started to use an opera style voice placement in mixed voice (as she does in much of Phantom) rather than sticking mostly to head voice when she does operatic style vocals. I absolutely love it because I love the fuller, chestier resonance it gives her in those parts. Funily enough, Tarja also used to sing opera style in mixed voice in her first few years with Nightwish (1997-2001) before she studied at the Karlsruhe conservatory. It was only after her studies at the Karlsruhe that Tarja began to use head voice almost exlusively. Also, I would be super interested to hear your extended thoughts on vocal pedagogy.

That's right! A real classical training is very restrictive and most off old teachers consider mix voice not healthy and it's physiologic incorrect, so they don't teach you how to use mix voice, only pure chest voice and pure head voice... Many years ago, when I started to study classical music, I had some troubles to sing different styles without sounding like Pavaroti. Can you imagine Despacito song with a tenor classical voice? Sounds awful! I decided to focus on contemporary music, so I have this background to sing classical and contemporary music and that's the point a lot of people keeping arguing about Tarja. She can't sing anymore without using her classical training, even in songs that should sound more "pop".

Not only was this the first episode but it was also the first song of the show. Before this only Henk Poort and Tim Akkerman knew Floor. So she really blew everyone away, and then continued to blow them and the Netherlands away every week after. Hopefully you will get around to watching her cover the other singers on Beste Zangers soon. If you are partial to a bit a metal, you should react to the band Jinjer. Their musicianship is mind blowing and the singer, Tatiana is a vocal beast. Most people react to ‘pisces live session’ version in order to see the contrast of her vocals. Floor Jansen sang for her first band "After Forever(founded 1995)" since 1997 being age 16 and they were the opening band for Nightwish in 2002. Ten years ago Floor sang "O babino caro" on Dutch TV. Full opera. It is on YT. But she says herself that she is not really schooled enough in operatic singing (only one year I believe).

Awesome reaction! This is one of my favorite performances of Beste zangers. I think this was pretty much in Floor's comfort zone even though she doesn't really sing in German. Also she was the first to sing in the show, eager to start. Most difficult performance for her was Que se siente, since she had to learn spanish. The episodes translated by the great Denise Hofs give some insight into these. Muumipappa spotted! Also I've got an Assembly t-shirt that's 13 years older than your poster :)

Floor shows us, that you do not have to be an actual Opera or Operetta singer to do these arias and shine like the star she is. Ofc you have to be good, very good, but... its Floor, she is extremely good at what she does, and she makes classical music accessible for more people this way. I actually think its time that the Opera/Classical world, takes a good look at itself, and decide if they should maybe start doing two versions of the Operas and classical pieces they play. One traditional version, because a lot of people will want to stick to that, but also a more modern version, kinda like this (doesnt have to be metal, but more modern cant hurt). I literally cannot count the times, i've shown a friend some classic piece, and he/she more or less hated it, and then i played a modern interpretation of the same classical piece, and they suddenly loved it. (go figure lol) Also, in classical and Opera, there is quite a lot of music, you could count as "heavy metal before electric guitars were invented" (Orff, Wagner and even Chopin (Piano Sonata No. 2, 3rd movement) ) So there is room for "heavy metal classical" so to speak :) As always, loving your reactions Elvann, see you in the next :D

Please make a reaction to a young, very popular singer in Russia and aboard. Videos from this singer collect hundreds of millions of views. This girl is now only 16 years old. She has a very unique, very deep, clear voice. Dr. Marc Reynolds (Voice Teacher, Stage Director, Performance Coach and Consultant, and Acting Coach ) said about the performance of this girl: Really really exceptional! Even if you ignore her age, even is she was 10, 20, 30 years older, this is still a really exceptional performer here that we're seeing. But at her age, unbelievable. Really really exceptional! Absolutely gorgeous! And again, not just because of her voice, because her performing, watching how nuanced and engaging her performance is. Ah, it's just so stunning. It's absolutely amazing. Had a long break of the band for some reason (listened some stuff once in a while) and came back a year ago due to KZbin suggestion. Floor Jansen (Rock/metal), Henk Poort (opera) and Taniya Kross (opera) all were on the Beste zangers show (Taniya in 2018 I believe, she was a metal singer in her teens!). They all have the same philosphy as you about music. Cross the borders between opera/classical and pop. Open the gates to each other. Good music is good music. I think Floor is the only one now (of those three) to do all styles to perfection and combining them efffortlessly. She really is a forerunner in my opinion. And God knows, she worked hard and passionately for it.

Very nice reaction. Especially the surprise of the metal version. About the operatic part - you said that your teacher told you that you sounded pop. I think "Show me talent" explains this in one of his video's. It seems that it has to do with the limited use of vowels. But then again I'm not an expert. Anyway great reaction video. I think one the most coolest thing about Floor and what the fans love more about her is how she mix his voice in different ranges in one song I think people already mentioned ,but Floor said that she don't like and never wan't stangnate his voice en one style 👍🤘❤️

I have watched this show episode, with subtitles, the comments from the other artists were like wow, who has a voice like that, especially as most of them had not heard of Floor Jansen before this.

This is what I love. When it comes to music, in reality, there are no rules. I've heard country songs turned into metal, metal into rap, rap into operas and the list goes on and on. The only restriction is the voice. Some people can't do metal, some can't do opera. But if a singer works a style that fits them, there are endless possibilities. This is also what makes Floor so so special. She just has to think of a style she wants to use, find a song she likes and boom, masterpiece.

This was the introduction of the "metal chick with the tattoos" to Beste Zangers and to the Dutch!! Floor sang it in German as she didn't like the sound in Dutch..and Henk well his mother sang this to him as a child so by the end you can see him tearing up. Here Floor served notice that she was going to do a emotional tour de force each week and her Floor version of any song would not be forgotten. The look on the other pros faces who didn't know her or really hear her sing before this show is priceless, and that look never seemed to change from week to week. The conquest of the Netherlands by Floor started here and man she left no prisoners and laid waste to the Dutch image of her before this show!!! Well if anyone can make opera more appealing to the masses it is Floor and a metal version is absolutely cool especially her way of doing the song here, the opera purist maybe horrified but too bad..this was the fun version done to honor one of her idol, Henk and she left the operatic aria till the duet with him later. The look on your face throughout this song was priceless, you were both stunned, and totally enthralled with the song!!! Another great reaction and review with some opinions I happen to totally agree with but I am sure there will be the detractors to deal with, doesn't matter when you are right let complain (LOL)!!!

Never let a box stop you doing what you want to do, then there are so much beautiful things to discover. Special note, in this episode they put Floor first to sing, in the last 3 episodes she is closing, think for yourself why ;-)

This aria is quite long and in a slow tempo and they could only sing for about 3 - 4 min/song, so she put a little faster tempo and metal sound to it, and it is absolutely perfect.

Bending the rules of what is considered to be "proper" classical singing is in my opinion a good thing. It makes it easier for many people to digest and enjoy. When nightwish started, very few people would have thought operatic vocals and metal.music would ever be appreciated. Glad it was made though ;)

Iittala Taika mug ❤ Vilja Lied was my favorite song of Floor's out of Beste Zangers , so much emotion. Shallow & Phantom of the Opera were also brilliant, but something in Vilja Lied moves a darker place in me.

Hi, love your reactions on Beste Zangers. Just a new fact not yet mentioned. Well Known is that Floor did get the award for best selling Dutch artist outside The Netherlands in 2018. But did you know there is another person on the show who did win this reward? The host of the show Jan Smit in 2004 .... He's also a well respected singer, not my style, but he can sing :)..

On Floor's choice: I read somewhere that Henk Poort's mother was an opera singer, too. And famous for singing this song. Floor knew him well. He had never heard of her before this show. Fast forwarded: he, at the finals, stated that he'd like to appear as a guest singer at a Nightwish concert. So: we're watching an upcoming convert, here. Haha!
