You're correct. The songs Twenty-three, Palette, and Eight are about how she felt at 23, 25, and 28.

Yes 23 and Palette were her songs of self reflection at those ages, however, Eight is quite a bite more than that. It is about how the world has directly impacted her as a person and how she struggled in dealing with those tragedies. 23 and Palette were self discovery and self awareness songs. Eight is a not about being a child or grown up, of deciding what color of lip stick. It is dealing with the harsh realities of life and things you don't have control over. It is also a little bit of wishful dreaming. In particular that Sully is able to say goodbye and that she never intended to hurt IU, an intended consequence of every suicide. I know there are still those who don't think the song is actually dealing directly with the lost of her three friends. Those people will list a few things from the song and over video to use to support their position. Like I have most often heard the claim that the song is a self reflection of her entire life. The biggest problem with those ideas are the weight of the entire amount of evidence to the contrary that those people simply ignore or gloss over. The only reasonable explanation for the ending scene of the MV is the Sulli, Goo and Junghyun story line and the role that hate commenters played. The title Eight certainly is representing her age but it is more than just that. There the infinity sign connection which is then connected to forever, as in forever young, which is a direct reference to someone (s) who will never age because they have past away. It makes no sense as a line directed at IU herself has she is aging (although admittedly not as fast as the rest of us). Then there's the connection of the title to Sulli. At the time of her death Sulli and IU had known eachother and been friends for 8 years. This fact also helps explain the title being a single digit instead of using the actual number of her age 28, which she did in the other two songs, using her actual age as the title in 23 and them including her actual age of 25 in the lyrics of the song Palette. In Eight the title is never mentioned nor is her actual age. While the Pearl's attached to her are in fact total 27 (not 28) symbolically denoting that that she is singing about the events that occurred during her 27th year but still dominate her emotions at 28.

North American IU fans this coming Thrusday and Saturday are the days we really need to get out and support IU's movie the Golden Hour. Of course I wish for the rest of the world where the mo ie is being released to support her also, I just feel the North America, If we are ever to get IU to tour here this is a major 1st step to show that she has a big enough and loyal enough fan base here. Regal Cinemas have the most screens in the US with AMC also having some. Virtually anyone in the lower 48 could find a city within 1 to 2 hours that is showing it. There are only 2 show times. Thursday evening at 7pm or 7:30pm and Saturday afternoon at 2pm. A few cities like LA and New York do have a third showing. Find a theater and let's put some butts in those seats.

I like how you mentioned taking out a journal and note the areas where she has changes in her vocal technique, because that is exactly what she does! She intentionally plans out her lyrics, intonations and inflections, and even how breathy she wants her voice to sound, all during the production of the song in the way she feels most able to capture the emotions convey the story to the listener. She's a great storyteller ❤
