Pantera - Cemetery gates….Phil surprised me with some very high notes... shocked and impressed!
Mistakes were made in filming namely the first 1:40 seconds of the album version were not included in the Official video. Also some I have since learned that this album was released in 1990. Not mid-nineties (Please forgive - ignorance can be overcome)
* For your own Singing evaluation & analysis, please go to:
www.wisio.com/KenLavigne
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed in 1981. The group's best-known lineup consisted of the Abbott brothers-drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell-along with vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown.
"Cemetery Gates" is a power ballad by American heavy metal band Pantera. The song is the fifth track from the 1990 album Cowboys from Hell, the band's fifth record and second with lead singer Phil Anselmo. The song, the longest in Pantera's discography, showcases Anselmo's vocal ability and range, concluding with screaming high notes answered by Dimebag Darrell on guitar in a trade-off.
Vocal coach REACTS - Pantera 'Cemetery Gates' - has been created in the hope that you may learn how to harness your own vocal capabilities and be able to make smart, informed choices on stage that enhance your performance.

Sadly I am not allowed to show the official video release of Cemetery Gates for this reaction due to copyright reasons. And I know, I know I missed the first 1:40 of the studio version which I have since listened to in all its epic glory and was suitably impressed. I don't understand why the opening was never included in the official music video. Time constraints perhaps? Also please forgive the choppy audio, I hate leaving anything out but KZbin is being feisty about certain audio content. Here is a link to the Official music video version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIewp3SIiZ6emJo Album version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4C8qGp8hadqeac

I think vocally, this is it. There is not a better song to showcase what once was Phil Anselmo's voice. If you're looking for something to vocally punch you in the face, try "Walk". You'll be pumped up to fight a T-Rex at the end of that song.

If you’d like to check out another metal song. The og metal band Black Sabbath, formed in the late 60’s!! Paving the way for all to come. Check out the song sabbath bloody sabbat. Ozzy has always had one of the most unique voices in metal and this song is a good reflection of that. Also bangs super hard! Very tragic. As a Pantera fan, this tragedy really struck home with me. A few months before this happened, my band played on the same stage and, as the lead guitarist, I was in the same spot where Dimebag was killed at the Al Rosa Villa in Columbus. It really had a profound and sad effect on me. He was definitely legendary, and a good soul.

All TECHNICALLY metal, but they can all sing too. Also, Incubus (Wish You Were Here). More rock than metal, but you still might like them too. I'm enjoying your insight and discovery of these great singers from music styles that perhaps you have not had much exposure to in the past. Pantera and Tool have both been fixtures in my life since I first heard them in the 90's. If you want to try another truly unique vocal performer, I would strongly recommend the song "Christian Woman" from Type O Negative. They were an amazing goth metal band from Brooklyn, NY, in the 90's, and their lead singer was a 6'7" tall genius named Peter Steele. He had an amazing knack for composition and arrangement, could sing using a bass voice so deep it would crack concrete, mixed with a high falsetto and elements of Gregorian chant, and he was so big he could play an upright bass slung over his shoulder. Christian Woman does a really good job of showing the full versatility of his voice, but there are several versions of the song. The full album cut is like 9 minutes long, but worth every second. It was heavily edited down for its music video, which I would not recommend.

One of their live in Moscow performances might be in order. Try "Domination". It's a more typical Pantera song from the same album, which is considered their first "big album", and second with Phil singing if I recall. Prior to Cowboys From Hell they were '80s hair metal, but on that album you can hear the crossover to their southern hardcore/groove metal sound. After that, go for something later, maybe "I'm Broken" or "Drag the Waters". It's also worth listening to Phil speak in an interview because he has a very deep voice that might surprise you coming from him. Finally, no Pantera vid is complete without talking about Dimebag Darrell. Everyone's top 3 guitarist at least (1st for me) , and the sheer sonic power that he and bassist Rex Brown put out together make the quartet sound like twice as many. Vinnie Paul's drumming is distinct and genre-building.

Cool show to watch and enjoy but to have a vocal coach react to that just doesn't make sense, the vocals on that video are trash. Phil just screams, and not in a good way, during that whole song and you can hear how out of breathe he is.... definitely not a live song you want an opinion from a vocal coach on... Unless you are hoping he says the vocals are shit...which they are in this performance.

Ken, awesome reaction! Phil Anselmo is an excellent vocalist! I think at that time (1990ish) his voice would be classified as a baritone... now, it would be a bass. The last high note sounded like a G5 or so.

Check out their song "power metal" from their eponymous album if you want to see anselmo's chops front & centre. Alot of people dislike this album, because it was before they solidified their style, known as "groove metal" but i think it's a great and very technical album.

Phil was awesome in his prime time. Unfortunatly, if you listen to him today, he's kinda the embodiment of what your voice turns out to be after years of vocal abuses, no training and not taking care of it.

Suicide note part 1 and 2 are the yin and yang of Phil's voice and Pantera as a whole. Phil has another huge band called Down. It is a sludgy, southern, blusey, metal that brings a new level of Phil's talent into play.
