FLASHBACK FRIDAY!! This was recorded in 2020 as part of "Rammsteinweek" on the channel just before Christmas and sadly my reaction was blocked then removed from youtube. I don't know why but now it can be viewed again - Back then, I somehow anticipated that there may be some issues so please excuse all the clunky "Play by Play" description - I feel I know so much more about what drives this band and the imagery Rammstein draws upon on their videos then what I understood when this reaction was shot. Till said in an interview that he was on vacation in the states and that he came across a guy who said "what are you doing here, you are in my country, leave" that's how the lyrics came up and the Video shows the opposite the california happy sunny states.

The song is based of an incident where the band was told to f off when they were talking in German at a beach in America because 'this is our beach & our woman'. Video: It's basically about xenophobia and the assumption that any tourist is only there for sex tourism (that's why there's unreasonably many woman) and wants to get rid of the natives (There's no American men in the video, only the band members). Lyrics: Same as above but also a second reason: It makes comment on countries refusing refugees entry saying 'there's no more space, go back to your country, this is my country!'. Rammstein believes that people should be granted refuge and make a statement against xenophobic opposition thereof lyrically in this song. They understand personally what it is like to be refugees considering how the GDR fell apart and several of them ran from the country becoming refugees in West Germany. You'd think it wouldn't be a big deal, but there was a ton of tension between Western Germans having to accept Easterners into their country try.

Oh, I did not realise he has not yet done that one. Yes, please do. More about the voice, less about the video. Though the video ist also haunting. I remember "The Charismatic Voice" saying something like opera singers should listen to this as an example of how to keep the tension in those speech-singing intervalls between Arias.

Fun fact: this song has never been played live apart from at one rehearsal show in Berlin, which I attended several years ago. Only a couple hundred people have ever heard this song live.

If there is a risk of me sinking into the floods, I would prefer Till Lindemann to David Hasselhoff as a rescue. After all, the Rammstein singer was in the Olympic squad of swimmers in East Germany.

Ken, you should have another look at the video, read the lyrics and understand that it is actually a sad song about xenophobia. It is soo much deeper as the visuals are not matching (intentionally) with the message. Also, in Rammstein fasion, many words have double meanings.

Without recourse to the lyrics, what do you have? An awesome, driving song and a curious, ever-darkening video. That's more than most bands offer. And yet, Ken, you are missing the point entirely. Too bad.

There are making of's of almost all their music videos and in this particular they all mention that it was the most fun one, and Christoph Schneider, the Drummer said that he "now gets, why hip-hop-artist always have girls in their clips"

It's about those people who try to keep "others" out of "their" country. This is my Land ( country) you can't be here. It is a CRITIQUE, mind you, NOT their opinion of how it should be. I believe some band members were told to "Go Home" while surfing in the US. Hence the beach theme and the "this is my wave and my beach" line in the chorus. Oh, and Merry Christmas - seems to have taken some time to get this one cleared😂

Ken I always love your reactions and insights! I would dearly love to see you do a video on the piano version of "Mein Herz Brennt". It is a hauntingly beautiful song and showcases Till's vocal abilities as much as any other song they perform. It's just a piano and Till, and is incredible. The song is, at least in part, about nightmares - and possibly insanity. Lots to delve into!

In the making of the video... video. The keyboard player is super grumpy about the direction of this video (he likes the darker parts), the rest of the group is pretty chill about it all. Pretty funny.

This song has definitively dark lyrics. The negative vibes regarding to strangers first increase very slightly, then right before the "Hasselhoff" scene, it becomes more and more aggressive. "This is my land, my wave, my beach ... here is no space/place left (for you) ..." In the night scene it culminates in a "piss off" kind of message. The whole song reflects and exposes xenophobic tendencies in parts of our society. Parts of the phrases in the lyrics are taken from common xenophobic argumentations. Maybe the daylight scenes should show how those people see themselves and the night scene shows (them) how they really look like. It is a bit like the song Amerika (but harsher). First: Oh yes, that's me. Then: Oh no, is that really me? (Or: Is that really what people think of me?)

I would interpret it similarly. The first overly happy scenes show how xenophobic people are a part of our normal society and people pretend like everything is perfectly fine. Once in a while xenopohobic tendencies shine through, but they are ignored. The last scenes with fire and flags resemble nationalist riots.

As always Rammstein has a deeper meaning in their songs. In this case (in my opinion) it is about immigration. Wohin gehst du? (where are you going?) Du bist hier in meinem land ( you are here in my country), etc.etc. Da kommt er angerannt Mit der Fahne in der Hand Mein Land. (He comes running with his flag in his hand, this is my country.) Und nichts und niemand Lädt mich zu bleiben ein. (I travel from country to country, nobody allows me to stay). Meine Welle und mein Strand ( my waves and my beach) Hier ist nichts mehr frei Das ist mein Land! ( nothing is free here, this is my country). As it gets more agressive the viewing point shifts more towards people who are against immigration. At least that's how I see this song.

It's actually about *imperialism.* Europeans claimed land around the world by proclaiming it was their land now. Even though there were already people with funny skin colors living there. But those inhabitants didn't count because those fools decided to sport the wrong skin color. And more importantly, those dummies forgot to stick a flag into the ground. So the land was *still vacant!* The very same Europeans who claimed the land this way, then proclaim to people who arrive after them, that the land is not vacant anymore. "This is MY country/MY land!" 🎶

Your remark "This Immigration Problem is not only in Germany." is puzzling to me. Hasn't Germany taken in more than its fair share of refugees? Sure, anything can be improved...but let's give credit where credit is due. When Merkel let in so many Syrians, this act of humanity and compassion was admired by very few worldwide. Most thought Germany was off its (collective) rocker. More recently, the British home secretary Priti Patel suggested using wave machines to topple refugee boats in the English Channel and cause the people on them to drown. Now, THAT is what I consider an "immigration problem". Greetings from the U.S.!
