this song is really important to the people of korea and to korea as a whole. kinda like an unofficial anthem about hoping the north and south can come back together and be at peace with one another again. so hyang’s voice is insane. she’s so incredibly talented and her range is craaaaazy

I also have to point out that this arrangement perfectly captured the spirit of the song. From the calm, peaceful era in the first verse, then to the dissonance & dynamic shift during the first interlude that reflects the war that divided the country, then to that hopeful, optimistic vibe during the end that represents the wishes that one day it will be united again. Beautiful!

She is known as the queen of mix & Bb5 is her signature note although she can obviously go much higher. She is very versatile,this is a traditional folk song,a very simple one like most folk songs are but its her arrangement of it that has turned it in to this epic number. She can pop,rock,jazz/blues & ballads & whilst she was o a show called 'king of mask singer' she can even be heard rapping(day day) although her heart is as a gospel singer. She is also the official voice of the korean version of the film Moana (there is a video clip from the film with her singing 'how far i'll go'). She has the perfect voice to be a Disney princess but as you have just seen,she has much more than just the light,pure tone we normally associate with such. A couple of suggestions,although i'm sure you'd be impressed with any of her performances, 'bridge over troubled water',from the immortal songs show or maybe her performance of 'i have nothing' at the DMC festival. She often sounds autotuned but is infact singing live. Even if you dont react to lots of her performances I suggest that you see as many as you can just for your own personal pleasure. I love watching people's reaction to sohyang but I find it especially satisfying when people that know whats what when it comes to singing,like yourself,have a similar reaction to myself who has no musical training whatsoever,I just know what makes my ears happy!! I love how you can hear the love of her country in her performance! Arirang is SUCH an important song to Koreans. It was the song of the resistance when Korea was ruled by Japan in the early 20th century. And it's truly one of the symbols of unity between North & South Korean people; it's a beloved folk song in both nations. I'm not Korean, so I can't speak much on it. But Sohyang's performance made me feel the presence of all that history and I cried!

Arirang, Korea with a long history, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 5, 2012. In the lyrics of this song, the East Sea and Dokdo appear, showing that it is the territory of Korea.

Awesome reaction! Loved all your professional input! Sohyang is one of the best vocalists ever and perhaps even the best alive right now, her technique is just insane! As you picked up on, she's a queen of mixed and head voice. She can reach C#6 in mix and E6 in head with ease and resonance! But perhaps most impressive of all, for me, is her musicality and emotion when singing. I'm glad you loved this stunning performance! I'd recommend her performances of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Everyone" next!

Thank you for the great reaction. Always love to see knowledgeable folks react to Sohyang's Arirang Alone. Sohyang is known for her high belt but as you noted, those with more background in vocal can quickly catch on to Sohyang's mastery of mixed voice and seamless transition. Kudos to you for your remarks on Sohyang's chest voice and resonance of her notes. I don't usually hear comments on this aspect of her performance that often. More importantly, so glad to hear your taking into the entire performance in your analysis. Ultimately, the performance is the final product of all these talents and effort. Hope to see you again. Many already recommend Sohyang's "Everyone" as a follow-up, should you choose to react to Sohyang again. She has commented once that that was the more difficult performance to prepare for in an interview.

Superb job with the reaction. really liked it. Sohyang is just so amazing. it is amazing how many people react to her even though she is practically unknown in the west. She can do gospel, folk, contemporary, rock, and even hip hoppy rap. Amazing control. and also she re-does the arrangement of most of the songs she does in such a clever way.

So Hyang in an interview on becoming a good singer said that you need to practice more than anybody else in the world. Also said she would practice a new song a hundred times before bringing it to stage. So what you see is the result of a massive amount of work from her.

I want you to know more about her, but not just her singing. There is a video from a vocal coach from Turkey who traveled to S. Korea to interview her. Its about an hour long, and you will have to turn on your CC. He does ask about her range, and she seems to not care, and even says, it doesn't matter, and that she has never checked before, but she knows she hits an Eb or D, and her people that were there were saying she had a 5 octave range, which means that Eb and D is in the 7th octave. Hannah, you will feei the same way after the 100th listing. She sings to comfort people who need it and that comes from het gospel roots. She has traveled the world singing in churches spreading the word. You will notice there are feelings you get deep inside that's hard to explain but it's her intention to make you feel. We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of "You Raise Me Up" before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV. She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 42 on April 5, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone." She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2014 or 2015 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on KZbin. Apparently Oprah Winfrey saw her on KZbin and showed her to David Foster, who then contacted her and went to Japan in order to work with her. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman!
