She was born in 1978, and is 42 years old. At the age of 18, she made her debut as a CCM singer. She survived the cancer when she was 19 years old. She was 34 years old and appeared on "I Am a Singer" of MBC, 16 years after her debut as a singer. (Most Koreans had not known of her until that time.) She started to become known to the Korean public in earnest. Afterwards, she will appear on "Immortal Songs" of KBS to become a singer. Many major production companies abroad wanted to sign with So-Hyang, She refused, "I don't sing for money and fame." The reason is that she sing to make her fan happy.

Although SoHyang is South Korean she is fluent in English. I had the privilege of meeting her after a concert in Los Angeles and she spoke with us entirely in English without any difficulty and she even read some English fan-mail from the lucky group with the ease of a native speaker. Believe me when I say that being in the audience of her shows is an overwhelming experience because I had an out-of-body experience when I heard her sing "Fate" in person. I had a moment of disbelief and shock when I heard her execute a seamless transition from her head-voice run back down to chest voice in the legendary climax. She is a fluent but non-native speaker of English; that is to say that her first language is Korean and second language is English. Keep in mind that she is a professionally trained gospel singer and she did spend some time learning in the U.S. I think most people will request "Lean On Me" and "Arirang Alone" but I think her performances in Masked Singer were just as difficult and inspiring (in order of personal preference): "Dear Love" (but only with subtitles b/c the lyrics mean everything), "Home", "Hug Me", and "Breathe" preferably all with subtitles since songs are in Korean

All this I say from my perspective, without alluding to anyone, I understand that each person has their way of thinking, Dimash is extraordinary, I do not doubt it, not for nothing he is currently recognized at such a young age, but what I mean It is to the performance, while you listen to the soul of So Hyang in each performance, in Dimash I feel that it is a little more different, it is a bit difficult to explain, because sometimes the vocal range does not matter, we know that Dimash surpasses So Hyang, but for the interpretation, anyway both people were blessed with unique and prodigious voices, I say everything from my humble opinion and point of view

When I saw your video popped up, I knew I'd get an informative and sincerely reaction from you. And I am touched by your reaction, for how it mirrored my own when I saw this for the first time (well, minus all that vocal expertise). I've seen many vocal experts talk about Sohyang's range, stamina, control, and technique, but somehow along the way, these technical tips all gave way to the emotional punch her voice brings to the performance. Your confessed distraction may be the more appropriate way to surmise a reaction. The truth is that I often find myself reluctant to watch this performance because I always end up physically exhausted, emotionally spent, and spiritually overwhelmed. Sohyang started out as a gospel singer and powerful one backed by her spiritual conviction. It's hard not to be affected by this mesmerizing display of vocal prowess and emotional attack :-) BTW, as others noted, she speaks English rather fluently, but I always attributed the precision of her pronunciation to her professional discipline. I have watched her singing (in video) in Chinese and showed impeccable pronunciation even though I don't believe she speaks Chinese well enough to overlook the language barrier. Thank you for this fantastic reaction.

Have to post once more. Its a shame that she will never get the recognition she deserves as one of the best female vocalists ever. So many STILL do not know she exists. The singers in the states are too spoiled and stuck up to let her have anything, but she needs to be recognized in some way, whether she does not have any gold albums or anything. There are none better than her in my opinion. Oh and her stamina.... there is an hour long interview i will leave a link for you to watch, where a Turkish vocal coach traveled to S. Korea to speak with her, and see how she does what she does. As far as the stamina, she speaks of fitness of the legs, and core to be the most important, to give you the air you need. In the video, you see her sitting and see her legs in her jeans, and can see how toned they are, and in shape. You need to watch this at your leisure, but its worth the watch, and at the end, it was her birthday, and they brought her gifts, and being all giddy, she just blurts out in English like it is her first language...... kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4OZlWOgnc14f80 Here is another that has the end part of her gift opening, plus some extras afterword.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/npLKi2RviqqceNU One more... same as the first, but in the beginning of this one, they are more clear as to her actual range.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gojUeZqEl66nY5Y

The translation is really good in my opinion. I think you can always use more eloquent words and phrases as you translate, but honestly this translation conveys the message really well. What is a bit strange is the English part of the song, it is as if they google translated it from English to Korean back to English. She has spent some time in LA, and her sister in law is a professional guitarist for DNCE (American band that had a hit "Cake by the Ocean"). She says she listened to so much American music and that music and language are similar in that more you listen to it more fluent you become. She credits her English speaking ability to listening to a lot of Mariah (along with other singers like Whitney and Celine) as a teenager. I am no SoHyang expert, but this is what I recall from watching her interviews on Korean TV. I actually agree with you about maybe still being a Christian if you knew people like her. I feel the same way. She has such warm, loving charisma and conviction that it is hard not to be moved by her. She also seems to have no prejudice and judgement that pushes me away from church. To me, she represents true image of love and kindness (again based on watching her interviews). This draws me towards her belief.

The English lyric is in the original song, which was released in 1979. The original artist is a legendary singer who was a part of all girl group in the 60s and 70s. They used to perform overseas in the US, UK, etc. They even performed with Bob Hope. Sohyang is an American drama fanatic. She self-taught English watching dramas and movies. I’ve been on the ‘Sohyang bus’ all year and just really enjoying her musicianship, and really happier generally, crazy as it sounds. I was wondering if you can react to ‘Stay’? It’s different to her other performances as it’s not for a contest and no demand to showcase her entire vocal range. it’s a song she’s wrote herself, subdued and low-key, and reveals her vulnerability - a side I’ve never seen of her before. It’s just her with a mic , a piano, acoustic guitar and an icy chandelier. I much prefer the live version than the produced video of it , it’s a completely different feel when it’s live- here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGWcZpJ9nMeYj7c Some extra footage at the start, she starts singing 35 seconds into the video

I like only two of Dimash's performances and both were of the song S.O.S. While he has great range and arguably peerless vocal agility, he doesn't give me goosebumps the way Sohyang does in many of her performances. I attempted to analyse why that is. It's obvious that Dimash is trained and is polished as a vocalist and a performer. Sohyang's training seem to be skewed to being a storytelling vocalist and little effort went into her stage presentation, which I believe is what makes her stage presentation tightly coupled to her emotions. I think that is why in part I get goosebumps from her performances. There's more to it of course. Thanks for this reaction Julie. Bewdiful mate. Cheers.

Thank you for reacting to Everyone. I really enjoy your reactions. This song really give me so many feeling and goosebumpsgasm. The way she conveyed the song... oh God, I feel like there's no limit to her. I hope you can continue to reacting to her perfornances. I would like to suggest Home (King of Masked Singers), Where Are You, Fate (KOMS), Bridge Over Troubled Water, Do You Know for another amazing performances. Monalisa and This Is My World if you are up for some rock songs. She also raps on Day Day. If some jazzy songs are your cup of tea, I would suggest Childish Adult (hints: duet) or Misty (fancam version and yes misty by Ella Fritzgerald)! She also sang a folk song Arirang Alone. Her own song Dream (DMC Festival) are insane and she sang it back to back with I Have Nothing (DMC Festival). Thank you once again! Trivia: before she performs on the stage, she would warming up to Whitney's songs for 30mins :D

Dear Julia, I am a fan of your Pre-Production Demos, but I am an even bigger fan of your heartfelt, insightful, and humorous reactions to Sohyang. You have enough comments suggesting which Sohyang videos to react to. I have listened to dozens of her videos and they are all worth listening to, for different reasons. You can't go wrong. It is obvious from your reactions you have fallen down the proverbial "rabbit hole" that is Sohyang's music. I will mention a few performers that you may, or may not, be familiar with. My list includes Morissette Amon (Pilippines), K Z Tandingan (Pilippines), ALi (South Korea), Ailee (South Korea), Tan Weiwei (China), and Angelina Jordan (Norway). Your reaction to "Everyone" stands out as my favorite reaction video of the hundreds, maybe thousands, I have seen. I love your "go to" phrase, "OKAY, OKAY." Your musical insights are a great blend of professional and personal. Please do not be offended, but I thought you almost had a little orgasm at one point in "Everyone." P.S. From all the interviews and short documentaries I have seen I surmise Sohyang is in fact tri-lingual, Korean (of course), English (he learned from movies and spent time in the U.S.), and French ( she studied French at university). Sincerely, Ruben

This was such a great reaction, it might be interesting to come back to it at some point and do a thorough technical analysis because there is obviously so much cool stuff going on. All you have to do is watch the video a couple of hundred times to build up emotional resistance (that's my theory, I'm currently a little more than halfway to testing it.)

@@jvoxfox If you are looking for something a little less intense (but still pretty emotional) she recorded a home studio version of Amazing Grace that is really cool and has no risk of copyright strike risk. Also tons of fancams, some with good sound quality that show off her live resonance. Last thing that might be of interest is to do a then vs now with one of her vids from the 2000's when her technique was pretty shaky vs. the 2010's Super Hero version of Sohyang.

@@jvoxfox The show isn't a talent show where unknown amateurs compete. It's a popularity contest basically. Sohyang, like all other invitees (not auditioners) are all established known professionals from the biz, albeit with differing level of fame. More fanbase = more votes. Fans/voters aren't vocal pedagogy enthusiasts let alone experts, generally speaking. I would go (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ too otherwise if I didn't know the circumstances LOL.

@@greatmusicdilettante6405 oh wow. That is a little unfortunate that its a popularity contest :( thanks for letting me know the ins and outs of the show! I understand it a little better now.
@greatmusicdilettante64054 жыл бұрын
@@jvoxfox My pleasure :) . I'm not saying I dislike the concept of the show, btw. Introducing a competition aspect does spice things up by making it more interesting, compared to merely inviting artists and have them sing one after another, a la other variety type shows. I imagine like everything that involves competing, the competitors/artists are therefore subtly encouraged to go the extra mile. I'm grateful for shows like these where we get a chance to discover someone like Sohyang flexes her vocal mastery. I also remember that without these type of shows, Sohyang would forever be a hidden, undiscovered jewel to the rest of the world, even within South Korea. But, as the saying goes, cream rises to the top. Once Sohyang agreed (Finally, after years of refusal!) to accept an invitation and perform in a television show, with similar competition format, she blew up. To be precise, she blew up the brains of vocal pedagogy experts and enthusiasts alike who didn't even know she exists 😁 . (I'm sure by now you've read comments on your videos outlining her humble disposition of not seeking fame nor fortune, how she refuses national and international contracts, and about fans lamentation of why she doesn't have even one social media account or online presence to self-promote herself more. But, that's why she's Sohyang. Diva level talent, minus the Diva attitude. She *_KNOWS_* she's damn good too, but she _always_ forwards compliments received to God, and her hard work is merely being a steward to not waste God's gifts. Sohyang definitely wouldn't fit in well in the music industry. I'd hate to see such a pure soul be corrupted by the industry too, and I'm not even religious or spiritual.)

The bit, near the end, right after the music pauses and she talks, she makes me feel like she's not performing some practiced piece but just playing with her instrument having a good time. She seems genuinely to be having fun and reacting more to the band. Beautiful. I really enjoy your very technical analysis and your expression of the emotions you're feeling. It makes me want to look at music the same way.
