I was a metal head from the eighties. Grew up in the whole scene. I was never one to care what others thought of me. When I first heard Jagged Little Pill at a house party in 96, I was immediately hooked. The intensity and rawness of her singing and the naked emotions conveyed in her voice. It was so metal without being metal for me. It was like nothing I had ever heard. I listened to it hundreds of times. One of my all time favourite albums! Love from Ontario, Canada 😍

Boy, when Jagged Little Pill was released I was absolutely blown away by her. It is phenomenally rare to hear one open up all of life's wounds right there for all to see. I had this CD on loop for months on end. Congrats again on 200K subs [whoo hoo.... YAY.... ALRIGHT]

Nice one Beth - I've always like Alanis: she's a really original and interesting songwriter as well as a distinctive singer. If you want to review stuff from this era, why not do something by Skunk Anansie? Skin is a really fantastic singer (there's footage on KZbin of her singing with _Pavarotti_ and holding her own!). They reformed in 2008 so there's new stuff as well as classic stuff to listen to. Also: did I just get the FIRST comment in? Bloody Hell - that's never happened to me before!

There's also another excellent Alanis live performance here on KZbin of her doing "Mary Jane" off this same album. (Search "Alanis Morissette - Mary Jane - JLP Live.") I'd love to see a reaction of that as well. Alanis really is underrated. She's probably known best as a "one hit wonder," but that really shortchanges her on how talented she was (and continues to be), and how much passion she has always put into her work.

I agree, and while breakout singles are both necessary and a curse I really liked the Entanglement album. It's richly intimate. Even hearing this version of You Oughta Know without the 90's thrashing Alt Rock guitars makes the song new and dimensional again.

She did a version of this on Howard Stern and she can still kill it. I love the anger in the original version. Like she was feeling this hard. This version is good, but is lacking in that respect a little. In the Stern performance and this she turned her head slightly away from the mic, like her voice is just too powerful to sing right into it.

I think that she controls snd uses her breathing sounds to add emotion to her performance. At times she sounds like shes gasping for air. This is intentional to add that emotional touch

I forgot how food this song is, her pop song "Too Hot" was good too when she was just Alanis. Uninvited is my favourite though. Man I hate censorship, It's not that I want to hear or see something deemed inappropriate, it's I want to see and hear all that the artist intended. Can you imagine going to a museum or gallery and all the paintings had black bars covering them or covered totally. Anyway that's my mini rant for the week. I remember when this song was in heavy airplay on the radio here in the USA. My best friend and myself would be road tripping to see our girlfriends. I could be wrong, but she sang non-vibrato accompanied with pizzicato and vibrato with stroke violins. I don't know whether that has any significance, but it makes for a great sound effect.

Great analysis as always. I would love to see you react to the Belgian choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers. They are most known for their beautiful, elegic covers of english, belgian, french or german songs. They did cover bands like U2, Radiohead, Nirvana, Rammstein, and many many more. Pls check out her cover of The Blowers Daughter. It’s quite a moving piece that shows quite a lot of their strengths. Vocal and dynamic range, touching musical storytelling and they do a great job with harmonies aswell. They did a cover of You Oughta Know too.

I believe I read that before that album came out she sang quite differently and was a main stream singer with what was considered a nice convenient voice. I had not heard of her even though I am Canadian but I am much older than her so that’s probably why. My musical taste lies in the 1960s and 1970s mostly. But when I heard a couple of the songs on the radio and couldn’t help but like them. Didn’t like the bad language and didn’t think it was lyrically great but I loved the melody and the rest of the words and her voice and performance.
