In the days after Aretha's death there were many people singing the big belty versions of her songs. Angelina went a different route. Angelina delivers this song with such respect. This is a person who's whole life is music, making a personal tribute to a fallen legend. You can hear the mourning in her voice, you can see the sorrow in her eyes. And to top it all off, she fades to black and leaves a 10 second "moment of silence" at the end of the video. ...and she made all these genius creative decisions at 12 years old.

Thank you for this very appreciative reaction to Angelina's lovely tribute to the great Aretha. She is at her best with simple acoustic accompaniments, piano, guitar...perfect for her. That is my opinion, anyway. It really allows her voice to shine, especially in such a soft song treatment as this.

You are so right. She is a true artist. She's going to do it her way, and that's it. When I first heard her sing "My Way", I though, this little girl hasn't lived long enough to sing that song. Then I realized that in her brief time on this earth, she's always done it HER WAY! And that's one of the main reasons why I love her, and what she does, so much. Watching her grow into a young woman, and seeing that she is very happy, and living the life that she has chosen, makes me very happy for her. TVL, thank you for your insightful reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. It is obvious that you are a professional who understands the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. As a retired music educator and an old-school jazzer, I hold Ella Fitzgerald as the gold standard for embellishments, riffs, runs, whatever you want to call them. She would not only emulate the improvisation of the great instrumentalists of her day, she created her own style that set her apart from everyone else. She always stayed within the changes of the music and never did too much or too little, just the right amount. So many of today's singers do "vocal gymnastics" without really understanding the musicality that is required to be artistic. Through training and sheer innate ability, Angelina "gets it" and we, her audience, are immensely fortunate to listen to her artistry. I like to think of her as the Barbra Streisand of the 21st century. Not because their voices are alike, but because Angelina will be as much or more of a superstar as Barbra was in her prime.

However this songs was written by Carole King for Aretha Franklin (please stand up!!) and even Carole sang her own song through the high range, barely a couple of concerts..... Said that, Angelina deeper respects singers and composers. I read your comment with interest and a certain amount of perplexity. So, I searched KZbin and have watched and listened to Aretha singing this song - both the 1967 and 2005 versions.This is a song of happiness, and the lyrics speak of the joy of finding her soulmate and life is good. It contrasts how she felt before meeting him and how much happier she is now. I felt that Aretha did not bring out the emotion of the lyrics. Her version is certainly powerful but in my opinion it doesn't have the emotional "colours" required by the lyrics. Angelina is paying respect to one of her idols, within days of her death. Rather than mimic the others who paid a tribute to Aretha by singing in the same style as her, Angelina gave it gravitas by singing as if acknowledging the death of someone who had "rescued" her from a miserable life and was now having to acknowledge that person was no longer present to give comfort.

@@stormysamuel4666 This isn't one of my top-50 AJ covers, although she makes a tender and emotional homage to the great AF shortly after her passing. This is a very very god performance, it's just that the crazy high level of all AJ's work makes this one disappear somewhat - IMO. We all have our different opinions and I try to respect and understand my fellow man. I do have trouble with your opinion when it comes to AJ always sounding the same... If you're being sincere and have listened to 5+ of AJ's material, it at least makes you quite unique if that would then be your impression, bearing in mind that AJ, already aged 14 ,is nicknamed by many as the girl with a thousand different voices. It sounds a bit like you're making a "the earth is flat" statement..., IMO that is.
