I won't repeat everyone below, but I agree that this is an amazing form of reaction. I really appreciate you editing in the singers you think of when you hear Angelina. I know it's a lot of work. Your knowledge and insights distinguish you among reactors, in general, although some have done some very technical analyses. I really enjoyed it. My favorite "young" performance of Angelina's is her version of Summertime, for the finals of Norway's Got Talent. I think you'd see a lot of development from "Gloomy Sunday", her audition, to Summertime. She started the competition at 7 years old, and finished at age 8.
@BAfan-tt9zl

Amen to all of this - your reactions are DEFINITELY among the very most interesting, insightful, and enjoyable! I also agree about her performance of "Summertime" on the "Norway's Got Talent" show, along with "What a Difference a Day Makes" at an outdoor concert at the same age - those show growth and are a "don't-miss" performances! They showcase her Jazz roots, and her growth as a vocalist and artist - at Age 8! I hope you'll review those performances!

Thank you for one of the very best analysis of this performance by any Reactor. As you noted, she was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video, did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the music director, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. And then there is a shot of Angelina holding a candle, upon which was an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.

She's sung covers of more than 80 different wonderful singers. I doubt anyone could even venture an educated guess of how many she has listened to. Each time she listens to someone, she'll borrow a little piece of them that she likes. The result is incredible versatility. She can sing almost any genre or style and make it unique to her.

Since I didn't see the usual opening for this you may have missed her holding up a picture of Scream'n Jay Hawkins and her scribbling notes to the musical director. She likely wrote the score for this. She plays several instruments piano is just one. Besides several languages. I took her Proformance as a Homage to Jazz and in particular Scream'n Jay. And excellent comparisons of her techniques with other artists. IMO this, IS, one of the greatest if not the greatest singing and interpretative recordings of this Classic. It never fails to chill my old bones.

Thank you Andreas for your very informative analysis of this performance by Angelina Jordan. I really enjoyed it. Angelina performed this song publicly several times after this performance, however probably on the advice of her vocal coach she toned it down in order not to damage her still developing vocal cords. Here is a link to her performance of this song 2 years later on the German TV show “Little Big Stars” hosted by Thomas Gottchalk. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6O9fZ2AaLt1kMk . Wow. This is clearly one of the best reactions / analyses of “I Put a Spell on You” (by Angelina Jordan) ever. I love how you interspersed your comments with exemplary video clips to explain your comments. You won’t be surprised to find out that Angelina passionately immersed herself with the classic tunes of most of the “greats” that you mentioned... Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and others starting at the age of three! I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to future reactions to Angelina. One of my favorites is “7th Heaven”, an original, upbeat jazz tune performed by Angelina earlier this year (2021). It will give you a great example of the direction many of us hope Angelina steers her career. Make sure you react to the live studio version of what is destined to become a new classic in the jazz genre. ❤️

How fortuitous Andreas! Angelina just released a music video of “7th Heaven”! They’ both good. Like her other music videos (as opposed to her live studio versions), there is significant symbolism in the story it tells. I like the (slightly different) music in the live studio versions however. 😬😉👍

I've seen many reactions to this black and white video but your breakdown of this performance is by far the best one. The references to other artists and genres in order to highlight a tone or a technique is also quite insightful. And what I loved most about this video, you didn't think of this cover as one of those funny viral hits with a cute child in it, but you took this performance by 9 year old Angelina very seriously and took her for a true artist despite her age! A really great reaction and review. Great depth. It shows that you put a lot of production effort into this. The many clips of other singers that you inserted at selected points of the performance were well chosen and illustrative. It also appears that this was a complete reaction. And, all those clips were inserted after you had already filmed yourself reacting to Angelina's performance. That gives your viewers both the reaction, as well as extensive after the fact analysis - the best of both worlds. Please be sure that your efforts are recognized and much appreciated. Your closing remarks that, at 9 years of age, Angelina had incredible vocal control and musicality, and that musicality came from listening to a lot of music, highlighted major strengths of Angelina. Angelina is a musical sponge with an extraordinary innate ear for music and musical nuance. She soaks up music much faster than many of the most gifted singers. That is why she could deliver a performance like this one at 9 years of age. Musicality takes on a key role in an Angelina performance. She will experiment, but she is always seeking the best way to deliver a song. It is never about over singing or gaudy ornamentation. What she does is subtle, and you can revisit a performance of hers multiple times and still keep finding things that you previously missed. I would add one other major strength of Angelina's. (I'll need your help with this one.) It's her tone or timbre. I'm not sure which is the appropriate term to use. Maybe you would clarify that. By tone or timbre (whichever one applies) I mean to point out the physiology of her vocal instrument that produces the particular weights on the fundamental pitch and overtones that gives Angelina such a mesmerizing sound. In my very best German, "Muchas gracias."
@andreasgrussl
@andreasgrussl 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your words! I agree that her ear is amazing. You can hear that she processes musical information at a very high level. What creates these varying sounds are modifications to the shape or her vocal tract, so the resonance chambers of her voice. She has learned how to adjust them in a way that she can boost certain overtones or bandwidths of overtones at will. That is when you start to be able to "paint" in sound colours with your voice.

Vielen Dank nochmals

Words get too small, but I think she is the world's best versatile young artist we are lucky to experience. The only thing I have not heard her sing is RAP and opera, otherwise she has sung pop, jazz, disco, country and even EDM. Why Angelina sings barefoot is just to google. It's a special story. Recommend next: "All I ask" live studio performance. She signed with Republic Records (2020) 14 years old. They take it easy in marketing, when she goes to school, and the family wants as normal an upbringing as possible. Hun fa ca. 150 covers at YT, which has approx. 600/700 million views of her videos. She also has some originals. She is so good that they only need to press the button when she is about to launch. PS! When she was 9 years old, she published a book, and became Norway's youngest published author. She did not sign for AGT, and owns the rights to her performers herself. She was invited to set a standard on the show.

Funny you should reference Billie Holiday. On he every firdt audition on Norways got talent at 7 years old she did Gloomy Sundag by Billie Holiday. I remember that audition like it was yesterday. No audition has been talked about so much in norway.

Sure! She sang without taking a breath for about 13 seconds. I didn't mention that one because I felt it would have been difficult to keep the video in a flow and mention the length of the tone and the vibrato and the las word "now". But it's certainly a cool thing she decided to not take a breath here and drew the phrase together.

Enjoyed your reaction and analysis, you made me hit that subscribe button... lol... You may react to her audition performance for Norway's Got Talent, Gloomy Sunday from Billie Holiday (if you include the judges reactions, you will see how impressed they were, but one in particular asked her if she knew what the song was about, the implication that the is also known as the Hungarian Suicide song during the depression times, and she innocently responds "Yes, about a sad Sunday"....) ..... ALSO please analyze her rendition of Elton John's Good Bye Yellow Brick Road also performed at 13 during the America's Got Talent Champions's edition (same season as her Bohemian Rhapsody).... I am very interesting in your analysis for this one, I think is overlooked by many....

She is isolated in a booth. She is not directing. She is the leader, the arranger---but she is just gesturing to the beat.
@andreasgrussl
@andreasgrussl 3 жыл бұрын
To me it seemed like she was giving the musicians hand signs on several occasions throughout the video, not just the one part I replayed. Because even if she was in vocal booth, musicians would usually keep eye contact with the singer in a live setting. But it's possible that you are correct as well and that all her gestures were really just for herself like tapping the beat.

Great, insightful analysis of a wonderful performance by AJ. Just curious. Are there elements of the techniques she uses here which young singers should be discouraged from copying for risk of harming the physical development of their instrument? I note that AJ has never repeated this performance or this style since, even when doing the same song several times.

Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. Usually anything that involves distortion, growls, etc can be harmful quickly if done incorrectly. In my experience it simply takes quite a lot of practice to figure these out in a sustainable way. Plus during the process things don't always feel that great, so she may have decided to not go further down that path.

Ok, I saw your AJ Bohemian Rhapsody reaction, now this one. This one I mistakenly had as 40%. Was supposed to be 4 years, however, the one I am suggesting now for you IS almost 40% off her age in "Spell". The suggestion is I Who Have Nothing, one of 4 songs she did as a lark the first time she was in a pro recording studio. Try it, you'll like it, maybe even love it.

Can you react to Angelina's rendition of "Back to black" by Amy Winehouse, please?
@DonaldLancon
@DonaldLancon 3 жыл бұрын
Back again today for a second viewing. I want to push back on one thing you said. Starting around 3:31 you said that sometimes she "missed it a little bit, and her voice went back… to her 'normal girl voice'", using as your example the "no puttin' me down" line. I can assure you, the tone of her voice in that line was _completely_ intentional: that's her Amy Winehouse voice peeking through, about one year before she covered Amy's "Back to Black" (with totally rewritten lyrics by Angelina), singing almost the entire song in that style. Notice, BTW, how her "persona" while singing that line is totally different from the other singing she was doing at that mic: she doesn't seem to be quite as "into it" for just that one line - I think because that particular snippet of video was probably a "pickup" they recorded in a separate take. Whether the audio was also from a different take, I don't know (but I'm thinking probably not). Oh, and BTW, the gesture you pointed out as her "directing the band" was, I think, merely her asking for the sound in her headphones to be turned up (followed immediately by a "that's fine" gesture). I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me. (She does it twice, just before she starts singing and then again just before she sings a louder part.) There would be no need for her to "direct" any of the musicians, as everything would have been carefully planned out beforehand.
@andreasgrussl
@andreasgrussl 3 жыл бұрын
"Normal girl voice" maybe wasn't the best phrase to use here. What I wanted to point out is that she didn't use that lower larynx position on that line. It just sounded more like her normal speaking voice at that age than the sound she used before. I agree it could have been from a different take. She gave signs to the band/producer several times during the video. We'll probably never know whether she directed people, made a gesture or maybe just tapped certain beats. What I said was meant as a punt for her nick name "the boss" :-D

I'm surprised you don't know the reason why Angelina performs barefoot. When she was younger, I think even before Norway got talent, She was traveling with her family. There was Orphan girl or street girl who made a comment about Angelina shoes And The girl either said she had no shoes Or Angelina asked her where were her shoes and the girl said she did not have any. So Angelina gave her shoes to this girl and vowed To sing barefoot Until every child has shoes.

Man, you are really good! One of the best reactions to this song! Talking about AJ and Billie Holiday: You could (should) react to her version of "Gloomy Sunday" from the NGT (Norways Got Talent). Please look at the full version with english subtitles! I promise it will be worth it! Another recommendation is "The Warning", a mexican band of 3 sisters, doing Classic Rock. What they do is unbelievable. Maybe you could start with "Survive" kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2eVhImsgdxsfKs. As a 65 yo man who worked for a few years in the music industry I can tell you that since the 90s and Guns ´n´ Roses I never heard a better Classic Rock band. Give it a try. Maybe you will first watch the beginning "Enter Sandman" kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5PShox4brF5gLs a Metallica cover. The drummer Paulina was 10 yo and Metallica wrote "This drummer kicks maximum ass".

Awesome reaction and analysis, Andreas!! I had been waiting for your return after your reaction to Angelina singing "Bohemian Rhapsody". I watched that reaction a few times as there was much to digest just as with this one. I highly recommend all angels (fans) to watch that first reaction. I greatly look forward to your next reaction to my all time favorite musical artist. My recommendation for your next reaction would be Angelina's audition for Norway's Got Talent covering Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday". Angelina has said if it wasn't for her unconditional love for Billie's music, there would not be the Angelina we know today.

This is one of the better reactions and critiques of Angelina Jordan I’ve seen, you are very observant and did a good job, however I disagree with you on one point. When you said she went back to her little girl voice, I don’t think she went totally back to her little girl voice and I think she was right where she wanted to be with her sound, but that’s just my opinion, anyway good job I enjoyed it.👍 I think I will subscribe to your channel.

Thanks, would love to have you as a subscriber. The "little girl voice" was just an analogy I used to point out that she stopped making the adjustment that caused her voice to darken (lower larynx, raised soft palate) and went back to what her voice without that would sound like. It was still a great sound, just not what we heard for the biggest part of the rest of the song.

Great, thanks! She and Jess took their cues from the original, Screaming Jay Hawkins... Barefoot to call attention to needs of children around the world. Met a girl on the street with no shoes, weighing people for money...AJ gave the girl her shoes and vowed to never wear shoes when performing until all children have shoes. Has raised and donated millions to charity & environmental causes. Wrote a book, "Between Two Hearts" about meeting the girl.
