If you watch her performance with Barbra or last " You don't own me" cover it's better than on her hit songs. I think in terms of technique Ariana's a bit better. Avril has better diction, but overral Ariana wins. According this video it's very close battle.

Avril's technique is better. she resonates sound higher in the face and doesn't use her throat to sing like Ariana. She also widens her mouth to let out bigger sound. She also can access head voice. Something Ariana cannot do. Ariana uses falsetto instead.

The rest is pop generic and trying but failing to succeed at going toward different genres. Avril has done pop, pop rock, punk rock, rock, power ballads, pop ballads, jazz, r&b, soul, country, country-rock, rock ballad, country-pop, etc,. And all of her songs are gorgeous and honest and she brings that emotional factor that Ariana fails at delivering. Also the fact that, sure Ariana may have died in Manchester, but Avril spent a full year in bed, waiting for her death day to come, wondering if she would ever be able to put her head above water, begging God to give her a chance, she barely had enough strength to pick up the pen and write her music.

Both are really good singers, but I prefer Avril Lavigne for numerous reasons. She sings with her heart and soul. I can really feel what she says through every note she sings, and that really captures my attention. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pop or a rock song. Technically, Avril uses more her mid and high registers and has a unique style of singing, which I find more interesting than just showing off what you can do with your voice. Of course this is only my appreciation. Don’t get me wrong. Both are really good singers in their own styles.

Pop punk is what Avril really believed in since the beginning and she's emoted beautifully through it. It's not about technicality always, it's sometimes about the emotion and that's where I'll gravitate, more than trills and tricks because that's what singing is about. It's about escaping, believing and emoting.

It’s hard to compare those two because of the different singing styles. Arianna likes to show off and use her voice to full potential while Avril likes to sing for fun and be more chill about how and what she sings. Arianna is like that one theater kid and Avril is the one who can sing who is always in the back of the choir, if you know what I mean by those references.

Ariana can be technically better, but Avril's voice is way more expressive. I think the expressiveness is more important than technique because the latter can be learnt by anyone, the ability to convey emotions instead, is a priviledge of a few. So for me Avril wins.
