as someone who grew up in an indian classical music family, here's the thing: vocal runs are the easiest things to sing for indian singers, as well as for middle-eastern singers. it comes so easily for us, that i find it kind of weird why singers in the west are so impressed by vocal runs. at the same time, we don't emphasize much on vibrato, which is why i'm absolutely BLOWN away by western legends like whitney houston whose vibrato is so freaking fast. my vibrato isnt as long or as fast as many opera-trained singers out there

You know Indian Classical singers don't use anything but Chest voice and the very RARE head voice, never falsetto. If it sounds like it, its because they're manipulating their voices to make it sound that way. As a person training in Indian Classical Music (and an Indian), I can tell you that.

Well that's because the words in the language (Hindi) itself have got a lot of "nnnnng"s (nasal consonants) in them. And the female singer whose voice you slowed down to count the number of notes that she sings, that's our one of the top singers (Her name is Shreya Ghoshal) Listen to her songs (Pinga-From Bajirao Mastani movie, Dola re-From Devdas movie that she sang when she was a teenager, Saraswatichandra-Title Song of the series Saraswatichandra, Tu Meri Dost Hain-From The movie Veer) These are just few songs of her there's much more what she has sung!!! thank you, lots of love ♥

Well, whole classical indian music is way lot different than western classical music... The way Shreya did those multiple notes so fast is very common in indian classical music.. In fact I would suggest that you should watch classical singers like Kishori Amonkar or Pt. Bhimsen Joshi or Kaushiki Chakraborty (someone from current era)... All those singers you saw in that video were pop bollywood singers (some of them had classical music training though like Shreya Ghoshal)...
@metalforlife4ever5 жыл бұрын
Tristan! I've been a subscriber for a long time, I've got some good stuff for you to react to, please read! As an Indian singer who sings western pop and rock as well as the traditional Indian style which you heard in this video I could give you some context on the doubts you had. (GUYS PLEASE LIKE SO HE CAN SEE THIS!) So basically this style is derived from Indian Classical Music, which itself is divided into two - Hindustani (North India) and Carnatic (South India). So these styles have a way of gliding over notes that can be likened to a "run" but not exactly, because the notes are not just hit, but also there is an oscillation involved in between the notes themselves (which is a called a "gamaka" in Carnatic). Even though these videos showed mainstream Bollywood singers who aren't necessarily "Indian Classical" singers, generally when you hear Indians sing, they have that flair anyway. And yes, Indian languages in general are very nasal, so it bleeds into the singing as well. Infact when I sing in English, I have to reduce some of my normal nasality, add breathiness and add that "ih" vowel that talk about, to fit the modern pop style. You would love these two impressive clips of Indian Classical singing, Hindustani and Carnatic respectively. Just some hints before you watch them. Indian Classical music is 90% improvised, only fixed thing are the lyrics of the composition they use and the scale (called a "raga") it is set in. Also the words "Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, Sa" that you hear them improvise with in different combinations is our solfege system which corresponds to Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do in the Western system. This is a traditional Hindustani concert by the famous and talented singer Kaushiki Chakraborty. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3bUiq2ar5iNrMk And this is another famous and talented Carnatic singer, Sid Sriram, singing a composition with a piano accompaniment. It's not a traditional Carnatic concert with all the instruments but this is great video to appreciate the beautiful and nuance-filled singing in all its glory. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ-vhXuAhNioa8U Because you said you wanted to listen to women more, here's a wonderful performance of a legendary Carnatic musician in a traditional Carnatic setting, Bombay Jayashri! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnzUfXiee8tpeck

It's called "Sangadhis" in classical carnatic music (the runs you are referring to are just fast arrangement of notes and are a very common occurrence in Indian music)
@dybiosol5 жыл бұрын
Ah yes. Adding to that, in terms of western music theory, this would not be recommended at all because during those runs, even though they are in the corresponding scale of the verse, they would instead be jumping in and out of almost all the different modes which can easily throw off a regular western vocalist.
