It was the first song of the first episode of Beste Zangers season 2019. 'Let's have some fun', was the general attitude, but it flipped because of the high quality of two, Henk and Floor, who pushed the others to make season 2019 the best one ever seen. Floor only participated because Henk had already agreed to take part. The Marcel Fisser Band is well known in the Netherlands. they are long term professionals and do the music in many TV programs. The band knows how to cooperate with artists to get the best out of them.

Hi, my name is Floor. I sing heavy metal. Oh, you want to hear opera.... Hold my beer. This performance was the first of any of them for the season. I would lay money that some of them had thought they might be a ton better than a heavy metal screamer. After this, not so much. And there are a number of youtube clips out there with her singing legit opera.

The really fun thing about this, is that Henk had been going around teasing everybody with how much he looked foreward to hear some opera - he honestly had no idea of Floor's opera training or singing capability. And this was the first song in the entire show! - Henk suddenly got a wake up call - just like the rest of the performers incl the orchestra. Floor set the barr so high from 1. Minute that the season of this show became beyond anything before... and after.... Well, she did 10 extra shows afterwards, all sold out in a spiltsecond - and won a music price that year, going from farely unknown to star in her own country.. And Nightwish had to schedule an extra show in the up coming world tour (incl Henk as guest star!!) The power of TV...

Henk was her first musical idol. Her parents took her to see Phantom of the Opera in Amsterdam when she was in high school. This was a very big deal to her.

So this was the first song performed in the 2019 show. Tim Akkerman is the only singer that had heard Floor sing before. Everyone else just new that she sang in a "metal" band and had little idea what to expect. I think she set the bar pretty high with this as the show opener.

On Beste Zangers each show is dedicated to a different singer seen in this programme. Although in the Netherlands, very few of the other singers knew much about Floor they soon found out after this first performance !! You can hear her sing various other songs in Dutch,Spanish and English including the best version of Shallow ever to the other artists.

This whole Beste Zangers series is amazing! Not just for Floor, who I love of course, but all the amazing singers on the show that season. And there's no competition! It's so wholesome! If you get a chance to watch it, definitely do so (even if you're not reacting to it for twitch/youtube). They get into how they choose songs, how they want to execute them, etc. Really awesome insight for vocal nerds.

Floor would never claim to be a full opera singer. She uses it as a tool to move in and out of for dramatic effect. She stopped her training because she found pure opera a little to high brow and was more interested in using some of the techniques in her pursuit of what she really loved. many people refer to her as a soprano, and once again she would tell you that to truly be a soprano is a whole different ball game. She loves to do many different colors and just loves to sing for us.

That makes total sense! We were talking about how natural her voice is, but it's like the pinnacle of where you can go with natural without being an enigma. Her work ethic and ability is an enigma, but anyone can hear her and feel what she does because it is the epitome of human capability

This song used to be a staple within the Dutch population. When I was a young boy in the late sixties my mother used to play piano on Sundays when visiting my great-grandmother in the retirement home she lived at. When my mother played this song, half the residents used to sing along.

I love how she kinda fooled everyone here: This was the first song she did on the show and - apart from one single person - the others really didn’t have any idea who she was (despite her also being from The Netherlands). So they only knew that she was the front woman in a heavy metal band, which causes most people to have pretty rigid ideas of what you do as a singer. Floor totally shattered that prejudice when she came out and sang this aria (and so well, too) - which is why they are all looking as if they’ve been hit in the back of the head with a 2x4, lol.

There was no prejudice, only admiration. They had to pick the songs before they went to Ibiza. So they knew what she could do. But being there in such a small group is something else.

B B S Nice thanks. They asked her why she didn't sing it in Dutch or English ? She said it just sounds better in German Henk's mom used to sing it to his dad when was a boy. In return Henk sang " Sounds Of Silence ' ( Disturbed version ) for Flood. It's good stuff man. The last song of the show was " Phantom ".

Floor is ridiculously versatile, and yes.. i'd say she is one of those "one in a generation" singers, not because she is good at a certain genre or two, she is good at pretty much anything genre she does, that elevates her above many others. This was *not* the first time most of the other singers have heard her. They had three months before the first episode was recorded to study the other singers, pick a song, learn the song, practice with the band, etc. For the ones that didn't know her before this show this was the first time they'd heard her sing *not on a recording*, but not the first time they heard her.

They would have assumed that she was 'just' a metal singer as most of what is readily available of her was her work with After Forever, ReVamp and Nightwish. That was what Tim knew, and he'd seen her perform live before. I doubt that most of the other singers were thorough enough to have heard her sing Puccini. imo.

@@danwhitehousepc I'm not sure. What you say makes sense and sounds logical, but Floor has done some pretty operatic stuff with After Forever too, especially early AF. Silence from Afar for example. Plus, there have been recordings of her singing arias on the internet since long before BZ'19 was recorded. You mention Puccini specifically, there have been HQ recordings of her singing O Mio Babbino Caro on youtube since at least 2013. We'll never know how thorough the other singers have been in studying her and hearing someone live from 5m in front of you is completely different than hearing someone on youtube or from a CD, I'm just kinda tired of people saying 'this was the first time they heard her sing', which is simply not true.

This performance need context, but I figure you already have (which is not usually the case). So, it was the first performance of the 2019 Beste Zangers, a Dutch show I think. I may be wrong, but I figure no one know her before, and she admit most dutch people dont know about Nightwish, and you can see the impression she made on the other signers. And more the show goes on, the more it was clear she impress all of them. So, You seem to know this show, so it began with Henk Poort, and before signing, she admit he had an influence on her for a long time and was a kind of intimidate to sing for him. This is cute, but if you watch all the episodes, you will see something happen between them. For me, a great respect, but also the beginning of a friendly relation. Their duet, Phantom of the opera, sealed it for me. Henk was use to sing the Phantom in musical, but Floor also knows it, so it was an interesting prestation by both. Now Floor seems to have different projects during this pandemic. One of them is to find a friend and talk about a subject; she call it "Floor find". And guess, she did one with Henk who came probably at her house (I think, may be wrong). And before they sing the Phantom on an external stage where surprisingly you can see Floor more at ease than him (well, from my point of view), probably because she used to sing in front of huge crowd. You also talk about opera. Floor is a very good technician. She is more than that, but I mean she love to learn all about signing (4 or 6 years, not sure). She was a vocal coach for 15 years, which she stop because of the time it need to do it, but she has starting a master class series (her 3rd has been release few days ago). So, back to opera, she definitely learn some aspect, but never being an opera signer, she surely doesn't have the training and experience. I mean that with time and training, she can do better for sure. For me, she is a soprano, but you may figure something else. If you like to react to this one, go with the one I picked. Because you may find many other take of this song by her, and I think this is one of her best. It's 10 years ago, so before Nightwish, but it is also closer to her classical training. Nice reaction. Please do all her songs in this tv show. If so,do the one with the intro talk and english subbs.(someone in the discord group can give you the links) With the talk you get to hear for who and why she sings a song and then it makes more sense why that person gets emotional during the song. I believe the only person at Beste Zangers who knew who Floor was was Tim Akkermann through the Dutch Metal network. But fnglert has to be correct in his assessment of how the singers learned the songs they were to sing.

It is from a Dutch show called Beste Zangers. The format is. Singers get to know every other singer on the show through their musical work and history. They pick songs they want to perform that tell a piece of the history of the guest of honor on the bench next to the presenter, who is also a renowned singer from the Netherlands. Often they will change a song to their own preferred format or a new challenging format or make a translation to either Dutch or English, or in Rolf's case to spanish..
