In a recent Bee Gees documentary, some music industry person said “when genetic relatives sing in harmony, it creates a sound like a rare instrument you cannot ever find again.” I feel like that when Finneas harmonizes with Billie. So beautiful!!!

I'm obsessed with Billie's new album. The whole thing is experimental and contains a lot of these kinds of clever, hard hitting lyrics. And the handful of live performances we have of the new songs are just so good and so strong. It's clear that Billie is actually Happier Than Ever, and the album was her way of putting all her negative feelings into a song instead of having to relive them over and over again. Please take a look at her live recording of Male Fantasy, it's my favorite track off the album! Also please check out more Olivia Rodrigo! She's bringing classic 90s punk back almost single handedly!

Did you notice the creative use of auto-tune with the song NDA? I'm somebody who hates Auto-Tune aggressively. I despise it and I think it's used as a crutch because most of the time honestly it is. However on NDA as the chorus gets more intense they make the vocal sound more frantic and buzzy to increase the intensity as the chorus explodes. I thought that was a brilliant creative use of auto-tune used to enhance the song instead of using it as a crutch. Not often you actually hear auto-tune and notice it and think it's done well. Most of the time any notice of auto-tune just ends up disappointing because you wonder what it's covering up. Nice to see it used creatively to make the song better though on NDA.

@@TorrentFiend10 Auto-Tune isn't even a real sound engineering term. It's a vocalizer, and it's been used since the 80s to create effects on voices long before people were using it to "tune" their notes in secretive or manipulative ways. Personally I don't really care if someone can really sing the songs on their albums because I don't go to live performances and there are plenty of artists whose content I only consume in a digital format. People who make electronic music don't sing at all and I enjoy that just fine. That said, I like the way the effect is used in that song.
@TorrentFiend10
@TorrentFiend10 3 жыл бұрын
@@octo448 sorry but you are wrong. Auto-tune is absolutely a real engineering term. The effect is literally in fact called autotune. I am a sound engineer who was schooled at the recording workshop in Ohio. so I'm telling you you're wrong on this. It was invented in 1997. A submarine guy who messed with sonar to map the ocean floor or other stuff they use sonar and sound resonance for invented auto-tune. He took that basic technology and just applied it to human vocals. Here's a bit more info proving this from Wikipedia. If you do a simple Wikipedia search you will also see the literal name auto-tune on the effect pictured. Auto-Tune (or autotune) is an audio processor introduced in 1997 by and registered trademark of Antares Audio Technologies.[4] Auto-Tune uses a proprietary device to measure and alter pitch in vocal and instrumental music recording and performances. I think what you are actually talking about is more along the lines of pitch shifting and pitch correction which has been around for much longer than Auto-Tune and that is another way you can alter and shift vocals to pitch correct things but auto-tune is something different. It can be applied in different ways and the basic way it works goes about it differently than pitch correction. I've pitch corrected vocals on several rock singers in the past myself. On one of the processors I used to use pitch correct I recall pitch shift c was pretty popular and worked a lot of times to help vocals sound better. I haven't worked as an engineer since about 2005 and unfortunately have forgot a lot over the last 15 or 16 years about it but back then the songs I did work on I used pitch correction and that's what you're probably thinking of. It was not auto-tune. Auto-tune was just starting to get popular back then and it wasn't as widely used as it is now. I also used more reel to reel setups as things were transitioning to pro tools and digital back then. I like computers more so I went into computers but auto-tune has not been around since the '80s. Specifically I used to use the Yamaha SPX2000 pitch shift C to pitch correct some vocals and it could do other good stuff to vocal tracks as well. Really great vocal processor that's widely used. And the business that processor is kind of a secret weapon for helping poor vocals...... I'm sure nowadays it's a pretty common plug-in on whatever daw you choose to use or whatever has replaced it. I haven't kept up on the gear and plugins throughout the years since most of what I learned was using real processor hardware instead of computers. Most of my experience was on 2 inch reel to reel analog recordings, patch bays using real processor racks of hardware etc. Where you had to actually connect the cables to enable the hardware needed. Early and mid-2000s was a weird time in the music business. The education taught to new students like me back then was teaching the old stuff and trying to keep up with the new things the best they knew how. That was the period where pro tools really started to take over entirely but it didn't happen all at once so it was kind of weird for a while education wise. I was taught the new stuff and used a pro tool setup, Mackie consoles were also very cool. I was trained on Mackie D8B digital 8 bus console....... If you're curious Google it and you can see what it looks like. Sony MXP 3000 console was another one of the main large consoles I was taught on. If you want to learn a little bit more about auto-tune from the people who invented it and oddly enough T-Pain who was one of the very first people who made it extremely popular...... There's a fantastic music series currently on Apple TV+ streaming service called "Watch The sound with Mark Ronson"....... If you don't have the Apple TV streaming app then perhaps you know how to find the show elsewhere. Also Netflix has a awesome music series that's new called ”This is Pop"......... Both of these very good music series have lots more details about auto-tune and in fact have an entire episode devoted to specifically Auto-Tune. You could learn a lot from watching these.
@TorrentFiend10
@TorrentFiend10 3 жыл бұрын
From wikipedia...... The next time you want to argue something you know nothing about maybe you should do a quick search on Wikipedia or Google before saying things that are completely inaccurate and wrong..... Seriously, watch the two shows I mentioned. Netflix has a show called This is pop and it has an auto-tune episode. Apple TV app has a show called watch The sound with Mark Ronson and they also have an auto tune episode which will educate you. History Auto-Tune was launched in September 1997[13] by Andy Hildebrand, a Ph.D. research engineer specialized in stochastic estimation theory and digital signal processing. Over several months in early 1996, he implemented the algorithm on a custom Macintosh computer, and presented the result at the NAMM Show later that year, where "it was instantly a massive hit."[14] His method for detecting pitch involved the use of autocorrelation and proved to be superior to earlier attempts based on feature extraction that had problems processing certain aspects of the human voice such as diphthongs, leading to sound artifacts.[14] Music industry engineers had previously considered the use of autocorrelation impractical because of the massive computational effort required, but Hildebrand found a "simplification [that] changed a million multiply adds into just four. It was a trick - a mathematical trick".[14] According to the Auto-Tune patent, the referred implementation detail simply consists, when processing new samples, of reusing the former autocorrelation bin, and adding the product of the new sample with the older sample corresponding to a lag value, while subtracting the autocorrelation product of the sample that correspondingly got out of window,[5] and no proof that the corresponding optimization was not used for implementing similar pitch correction algorithms (called PSOLA or time-domain harmonic scaling) was however included. Hildebrand had come up with the idea for a vocal pitch correction technology on the suggestion of a colleague's wife, who had joked that she could benefit from a device to help her sing in tune.[14][15] Originally, Auto-Tune was designed to discreetly correct imprecise intonations, in order to make music more expressive, with the original patent asserting that "When voices or instruments are out of tune, the emotional qualities of the performance are lost."[6]

The spinning top simile really hit the nail on the head. I'm a 67 yr. old fan of Billie's and that simile, metaphor (?) is excellent. I don't think any other singer I'm aware of does that - I believe that's what is so surprising about Billie - besides her authenticity & vision, is that unique voice, that makes even her diehard fans wonder if she can pull it off [ like in "No Time to Die" ] - its like we expect the "TOP" to fall over and it doesn't, and that's such a surprise - almost as if it starts to Spin again and quit wobbling - how did that happen? Also, I watched to see if some of you honest, competent reactors would turn your backs on Billie after the LOST CAUSE official music video - the discomfort of some with strong moral/religious convictions is visible in reactions, almost palpable - and Billie's use of the "F" word in "Happier Than Ever" may give you pause - I live in rural MN and have heard adults older than you, my age and older use that word for 50 yrs - it may be more vague in it's definition today than it was when you were a kid. I'm glad Jacob Restituto reacted - I waiting and was watching to see if some others - who liked and praised Billie in the past - could get past their scruples and concerns for the culture ... and not give Billie the silent treatment. [ How many politicians from both parties, use the "F" word - most of us still vote? ] Thank you for this.
@octo448

What is so upsetting about the Lost Cause music video? If you mean Billie's choice of neckline... I mean, Tara is wearing a top (I love your fashion Tara but it's true!) that is more revealing than anything Billie wore in the video. Otherwise it was just a bunch of girls having a party in a fancy house, I'm not sure what's so morally upsetting about it. I figured people were giving Billie the cold shoulder because she's 'old news' rather than because of any moral grandstanding.
@alternateuniverse422
@alternateuniverse422 3 жыл бұрын
Not going to comment about Lost Cause except to say that I think people getting all offended about it should probably find something better to be upset about. About the use of the F word in this song. There is zero swearing on Billie's previous album. There's an interview with her and Finneas where they said that as writers they thought a better word could always be found. However, in a recent interview Billie said in this particular song she specifically chose those words to help express how much emotion is in this song. I find their use of vocabulary, everyday sounds, lighting and visuals that are so carefully thought out to enhance their music to be pretty amazing.
@mitcht2717

@@alternateuniverse422 I like "Lost Cause" and found nothing offensive about it (song or video) and "Happier Than Ever" the Track would be diminished without the "F" word - thanks for the reply. I'm glad you included that explanation from FINNEAS and Billie.

I definitely agree the rock/punk genres are underrepresented in pop music, but not because they don't exist. Rather the industry and labels in general have narrower perception of what they can monetise than in the 80s and are risk averse. Have you reacted to Aurora? Billie wouldn't be singing now if it wasn't for her hearing Aurora sing Runaway when she was 12 years old. She is magical.
