The thing about that particular live performance is how, leading up to it, he had the worst luck that left him nervous: -his concert that was supposed to be on his birthday got canceled due to poor weather. -one of ex-girlfriends, Caroline, passed away -he had a stalker -and he was robbed at knifepoint I think two-three days before the performance. So I think all of that happening in that same month combined with the fact that he had to perform one of his most emotional songs really affected him and made him really nervous; which you can tell by how he was shaking a bit throughout the thing. I think that’s probably why, while still a good performance, there was a couple nitpicks you mentioned.

He had guy he was helping as he thought he was homeless and then he became fixated with Harry and used to stand outside his house and stare menacingly at him so he had to go to court and Harry was asked did he regret helping him and he said no. Absolutely love this man

Harry writes all of his own songs, and worked with core group of around 5-7 people for his album, so he did write this song himself. He's said he wrote it in about 20 minutes on the piano with one of his friends/colleague. He just had to get all the feelings out. As for the music video. The set was a metal room which they painted to look like wood. It was shot in Hollywood in the winter so it was super cold. They spent $400,000 to warm up the water for him. They slowly lowered and lifted the set to get all the shots, but by the time they submerged the whole things the whole set got completely destroyed. The shot of him going under was done in 1 take, which is lucky. They worked with a crane and a camera man that swam with Harry, and they filmed it at night time. The smoke you see I think is VFX work rather than actual steam or a smoke machine, and there was a lot of color/editing in VFX to get the feel and look of the video to portray the feel of the song

I think when you get robbed at knife point and could be loosing your life at any moment in that situation and then have you ex-girlfriend committing suicide days before you go up one stage in front of many people you wouldn’t be thinking about the technique you should be singing in to get things right, would you? I thing he did a great job singing the song. It’s definitely not an easy one to sing.

I think this was a great performance, but he was just doing what he was supposed to do by criticizing it. I don’t think there’s any reason to get upset or defensive about what was said. Everyone is human and the fact that he performed anyway speaks volumes, whether or not it was 100% technically proficient.

The room in the music video was actually a built set that they lowered into a pool. I've also heard from someone that the water might have been saline so he could keep his eyes open but I'm not sure. For the live version I'm sure many people are already telling you that his performance was preceded by a series of unfortunate events. The most recent of those events being him being robbed by a group of armed guys and the untimely passing of a loved one. Many were unsure if he would even still perform. I think he did a good job channeling the emotions he probably had into his performance. I had no idea about the vocal fry in the original version. You can already see in the comments what events transpired right before this performance. I don't have a good ear so I didn't notice any flat notes or things like that but in my mind, his raw emotional performance should make up for anything technical. That song does feel like he's baring his soul and I can't imagine how hard it was to sing it. You can see his nerves by the way he's holding the mic tightly in one hand and never lets go. He doesn't usually do that. He was steadying himself. That high note cuts through your heart. The first time I heard the song when it was released, I cried. It took me a full 30 minutes to get it together!

They warmed up the water for him. They constructed the room and had it on the crane and lowered it into the water. He was really under the water. People think it's CIG but it's not. Reminds me of when he was in the movie "Dunkirk" he was in the water a lot too. If you think about it when he did it live, it was at the Brits awards being seen all over the world, there were really famous people there. I would imagine he was really nervous. I think he did really well.

I’d like to see you go through what he did and then sing perfectly live. I dislike it when people expect the live version of a song to sound exactly like the original recording 🤦🏼‍♀️. Harry always gives 100% and is usually just as good (if not better) live. So what if he is a little flat ... the emotion he gives more than makes up for it esp after what he went through to even sing it live.

This preference was extremely emotional for Harry that's why he was a little wobbly at first he had just been mugged at knife point on valentine's day and then I think the day before this performance his ex girlfriend who he was still good friends with committed suicide it was so sad it makes me cry everytime you can just feel the pain and he wrights his own stuff you should checkout his live performance of Adore you on the Graham Norton show it's Amazing x

The fog was probably at least partially coming from the water/pool the temperature was pretty warm bc it was filmed in January in California so it was a bit chilly then when they filmed it at night and outside.

FYI, similar to all songs on his two solo albums, with a few cowriters, Harry Style wrote this song, and it has some specific references to a recent breakup. Thanks for this one as well. I've just listened to your reaction to Watermelon sugar. If you scroll down, others already explained why his performance was so "dark" that specific day. So many bad things happened with him within less than 2 weeks. One additional note about the shooting: Harry said in an interview that he time to time swam out from the water to check back the footage, then swam back to continue.
