That was done and released 1969. The mid 60's to the mid 70's was the best era of music in America. Even then, it was an amazing harmonic release in the midst of the burgeoning Rock era.

1969 - "Helplessly Hoping" is a 1969 song by the American folk rock group Crosby, Stills, and Nash, written purposefully in alliterative form by Stephen Stills. They recorded the song at Wally Heider's Studio 3, Hollywood in December 1968 during their first recording session as a group, with producer Paul Rothchild. 1969-

For some context to the harmonies, you should listen to some original Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) -- "Teach Your Children Well", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Marrakesh Express", "Our House"... Their harmonies are completely distinctive.

The only thing that could have added to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young is the addition of Tim's bass. Having grown up on CSN&Y my mind immediately jumped to "Teach Your Children Well" as soon as this song started. Home Free really should go down in history as a companion group to CSN&Y.

Your observation of the similarity, harmonically, of this piece to the harmonies of "More Than Words" is intriguing. There is a folk-ballad tradition of only lightly instrumented songs (that includes, notably, Simon and Garfunkel), in which the harmonies are the soul of the piece--harmonies that are at one moment simple, and in the next intertwine in unexpected combinations like different-colored threads woven in a tapestry. I personally love these songs, in which the driving bass beat an dover-loud instrumentation are absent, and do not obscure the pure and pristine power of precise and provocative chords.

Don’t miss the perfection of written poetry in these verses. A common technique is to use the same vowel at the start of each phrase. Stay true to yourself. Yore a wonderfully cheerful person and that's such a good quality in a person. By the way I'm from way down Deep South Texas called the Rio Grande Valley. From the early 70's. CSNY usually had the 4 voices and acoustic guitars, so they are being faithful to the style. Music of my youth. HS in the early 70's and then College.

@@DamselDebICT I agree this off the 1969 album that had Suite : Judy Blue Eyes & Marakeesh Express. Helplessly Hoping, was the b-side of the Marakeesh Express single

Fun to watch your reaction. Two things....The era was the 60's, far removed from the 90"s. It was a time of searching, romance and turmoil. Ask your grandparents. Second, there is a Shakespearian word trick in the song, that being using words that start with the same letter. Keep up your explorations.

I used to think the best harmonies in one Song was seven bridges road by the Eagles and even HF version was better .... then I heard this and thought ... how do people think bohemian rhapsody was even in the same category .... if home free ever does that song the internet is over

Schnell, what so many miss is Adam Ruff (beat boxer) has a beautiful tenor voice and makes a fifth voice to this group. How great thou art is another example of his voice. I just love their sound❤️
