There's an interesting video assay on this done by the channel "sideways" and he points out some amazing behind the scene details about the clashes behind the visual vision for this and the audio vision for this (like Anne Hathaway choosing to cry during her performance for visual affects, as well as her laying down while filming and also singing for 10 hours straight that definitely affected the end musical result) Also, that's Samantha Barks playing Eponine you pointed out - and she also portaried her on stage, in the 25th Anniversary concert for Les Mis, so yeah, she can sing 😆

Samantha Banks played eponine in the anniversary concert in London 2010 before the movie, I have that DVD and that concert is so effing good. Nick Jonas played Marius there. He played the little kid when he was like 7-8, so full circle moment there 🤧❤. I love Hugh Jackman, his show he did last year was so good for what I've seen. He sang songs from les mis, the greatest showman and other musicals and stuff. He was supposed to do the Latin America leg of the tour before covid ruined everything 😭

I don’t like Nick Jonas in the 25ac concert tho. He is good with pop but I just don’t think his style fits the musical. He’s just not the strongest classical singer compared to everyone else.
@NineAnutza4 жыл бұрын
@@mushroomnerd9772 nick jonas was great in it, he was classical trained since he was 7 years old. He started on Broadway, his tone might have changed because he spent years doing other type of music in between being a broadway kid and going back to it at 17-18 bit for that role he was great
@mushroomnerd97724 жыл бұрын
@@NineAnutza i get the “full cycle” thing. Ariana Grande did the same sort of thing(going into pop after bway), but her “the wizard and I” was still out of the world. She made sure to sing clearly and I can understand every word she says (but not her pop songs). Acting wise I don’t think Nick is the greatest among so many west end and broadway legends either. Especially his empty chairs at empty tables just doesn’t give me the same chills compared to Michael Ball’s. You can see he is struggling with some notes and breathe control. Respect your opinion tho. I love his music, and he is a great singer, I just don’t think his “pop-py” sound fits well with the rest of the cast and the tone of the show. Same goes with Amanda Seyfried in the movie. I didn’t enjoy her singing, but I love her as an actress. I agree with how great Hugh Jackman and especially Samatha Barks are. I think her Eponine is definitely up there, probably on par with Lea Salonga’s. Her acting is great in both. And recently seeing her sing Let it Go as Elsa was sweet cuz it feels like Eponine letting go of Marius and becoming her own brilliant self. Sorry for rambling, but here’s my two cents. Have a great day!
@jamesjackson82924 жыл бұрын
I was just about the bring up that samantha already had plenty of experience as eponine. I though nick jonas did a pretty great job as Marius especially compared to the kermit the frog that eddie redmane did.
@jbmusician20072 жыл бұрын
The main reason I do not like the 25th anniversary production is because of Nick Jonas. He should have NEVER been cast as Marius. His performance was flat and disconnected. "A little fall of rain" is an amazing duet. Samantha was great, but Nick was just awful. He might be Broadway trained and all, but they really missed the ball casting him as Marius. I can kinda of get the "full circle" moment by casting him, but he should have been one of the students (Enjoras perhaps?). A great "full circle" moment was bringing Colm Wilkinson (the original valjean) back as the monsignor of the abby.

Hugh Jackman played Curly in Oklahoma and Harold Hill in The Music Man; he won a Tony for portraying Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz. Hearing your reaction as a vocal coach to Hugh J.’s JVJ, I am very surprised. Maybe it’s the music educator in me but I can’t ever recommend his singing in Les Mis to my kids. It’s pitchy, not well placed, and you can hear him straining badly at times. I was recommended to your channel by one of my kiddos and I believe you are one of the good vocal KZbin coaches (and there are not many good ones) who give sound, healthy advice for singers. But in this case, and in this roll, the music is simply to big for Hugh and it shows. His performance in Oklahoma was much more in his singing ability and it translated to how well he did in comparison.

Someone said not long after this movie came out, that Russell Crow didn't get as much training as the other cast members. Almost everyone cast had some singing experience before, at least I think they did. Helena Bowman Carter is the best, she just seems to be messing around with fellow cast members and having fun! I've never seen it live, I've seen some youtube videos, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I've seen RENT live and the movie version, both of which are great. I've also seen Phantom live and the movie, live is so much better! Jesus Christ Superstar was another one that was good for both the movie and live. Now, if they had sung like this in the movie it wouldn't have been as bad! Behind the scenes there was a lot of bad choices that let to subpar vocal performances in the movie. For example, Hugh Jackman was starving and dehydrating himself so he would look emaciated, but both of those things also destroyed his vocal cords. He sounded terrible compared to what he's capable of. Anne Hathaway did something like 20 takes of her solo, sobbing every time. Stage performers know not to cry that much and create that much mucus because it just kills your vocals. Doing it for 20 takes? Good grief.... Better choices would have lead to better performances.
