In this video, I react for the first time to Queensryche performing ‘Silent Lucidity’. In this video, I analyse Geoff Tate’s amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. So many people recommended this song and Geoff’s vocals are always something to behold!

Tate doesn't just sing a song, he paints a picture. He is,. in my humble opinion, one of the most expressive and intense singers in the industry. You feel his pain, his joy, and any other emotion you can throw in there. Listen to the whole Operation Mindcrime album and you'll understand what I mean. It is a concept album with an amazing story. It really is an emotional roller coaster ride.

Operation Mindcrime is, in my opinion, the most important concept album metal ever had. Tate and DeGarmo were genius. The official video for "Suite Sister Mary" from Operation Mindcrime could be used as a masterclass for rock opera. Should learn the entire story to understand it though.

@@Farinhir Agreed 100%. OM almost ruined me for listening to other music. I could not listen to anything else for the longest time after it was released. It was probably after the billionth listen when it finally started to loosen its grip on me. The album is just so damn captivating and intoxicating. I still listen to it faithfully 35 years later. It's a shame DeGarmo left because, for me, that is when the creativity of Queensryche started to wane.

Queensryche has put out a lot of excellent music over the years. If you want something slower again, I'd recommend 'Anybody Listening?', 'The Lady Wore Black', 'I Will Remember', 'No Sanctuary', or 'The Real World'. If you want to go more energetic.. well, the entire 'Operation: Mindcrime' album is great for that.

Agreed on "Anybody Listening?". I've listened to Queensrÿche since the late 80s and Empire is still my favorite album from beginning to end. The story about the end of Anybody Listening? is hilarious. Imagine a bunch of these guys driving around Seattle in a van and sticking a parabolic microphone out the side to try and record an actual drug deal going down. Suffice to say, they failed to record something and NOT get caught, so they just made up the end of the song. The sound of the Orcas in the song just completes it for me.

I love how this song is so very different from Take hold of the flame. And it really helps to understand the singer and the band. The fun thing is. Silent Lucidity became a really big hit, and was on all the charts. But it almost didn't make it unto the album. Because until a few weeks before the deadline, all there was was a acoustic guitar and vocals. So the manager said that maybe they should delay it and use it for another album, because it did not sound complete. But the guitarist who wrote the song really loved it, and the band loved it. So they wanted it on the album. So they pushed to have it finished and had the backing track added shortly before release. And then the manager loved it to, and it was added to the album. And that means when you said the composition is clearly the acoustic guitar, and the voice. And the rest is just like sonic decoration. You where more right than you have any right to be. Clearly it must be that wand giving up some magical powers. Because that is in fact all the song was at first.

For the next dive into Geoff's vocals I recommend MTV Unplugged "I Will Remember" (my favorite from this show), "Della Brown", and "The Lady Wore Black". Stripped down to mostly acoustic it really highlights his incredible vocal control and placement mastery.

Yes! I own the MTV Unplugged show uncut, which is FABULOUS! My recommendation from that show is " The Killing Words". After the guitar solo there is a part that shows how fearless a singer Geoff is. You'll know which part when you hear it. They altered that delivery from the studio version. "I Will Remember" is great too! "Della Brown" is also a bit of a bluesy song about a homeless person. They also do a cover of "Scarborough Fair" that's cool! They do it acoustically here, but also have a fully amplified version as well. I too have been fortunate enough to see the original lineup of Queensryche play live many times! Over decades of concert going, theirs were the BEST LIVE PERFORMANCES I'd ever seen!

The first time I went to see them after discovering them (Empire/Mindcrime tour), I was so afraid of being too far away from the stage that I got my ticket from a "ticket agent" (basically scalper) and paid the enormous sum (back then) of $300. Been waiting for you to do this song. This song is a masterpiece vocally, compositionally and lyrically. That magic new dimension is the 4th dimension, time itself. When you dream, you're in the 4th dimension. This explains that sense of "deja vu", you've done this before in your dreams and it hits you in "reality". Everything that will happen, every choice you make has already been made. This song can be classed as a lullaby, and it even pays homage to Brahm's Lullaby. I get the impression that the child lost someone close, parent or relative. The person that died is singing this song to the child beyond death - from the 4th dimension. "I'm smiling next to you, in Silent Lucidity". If you listen to Carl Sagan explain the 4th dimension, this song makes alot of sense. "Your mind tricked you to feel the pain of someone close to you leaving the game of life". Suddenly you hear and see this magic new dimension (I) will be watching over you (I) am gonna help you see it through (I) will protect you in the night (I) am smiling next to you, in silent lucidity

Lolli! Ive been waiting to hear you react to this song since Julia suggested it!! And you didn't disappoint! Your observations and little bits of information are immensely interesting, entertaining, informative, and satisfying! Geoff's ability to sing ANYTHING always thrills me! His tone and control and expression are just out of this world! (I'm gushing, aren't I ) No one conveys feelings the way he does! (and the gushing continues). I too noticed how the drums and strings "came tumbling down" in a reflection of the lyrics. As I'm sure you know, Michael Kaman did the orchestral arrangement, which was PERFECT! In an interview, Geoff said the record company wasnt very keen to include "Silent Lucidity" on the Empire album, but that he and Chris ( who wrote it) pushed for it, and when the orchestration was added, the execs got on board too. THANK YOU so much, for your delightful breakdown of my FAVORITE band and SINGER in the multiverse! PLEASE do more! If you're up for it, deep breath, a whole album reaction of "Operation: Mindcrime" which is a concept album consisting of one long, very well-told story, with excellent songs throughout! It would be spectacular if you and Julia could do another collaboration....but that may not be possible. Still, LOT'S of great QR songs to explore! "Roads to Madness" (studio version) is Geoff at his most expressive! Ive gone on too long again, thanks again for an amazing reaction! 😝

I’ve long thought this is one of the most well-composed, arranged and beautiful power ballads of all time, a triumph of songwriting. And kudos for catching the drum fill that is intended to match “the walls you built… come tumbling down”. I caught that some time ago but most seem to miss it. It’s ultimately another reason why this song is a tremendous composition.

This is because Geoff Tate is a natural baritone able to get up to 5 octaves and drop suddenly with the bass and then raise his tonality again. Geoff uses the voice as a real instrument of which he is a skilled teacher even today. Queensryche together with Fates Warning, Savatage and Rush and then move to Dream Theater were among the precursors of progressive metal, Chris De garmo himself is not only a great guitarist singer, this band did not have after the early 90s the resonance that really deserved

The song was written by Guitarist Chris DeGarmo as a lullaby of sorts to his daughter. He developed a fascination with lucid dreaming around the time. Don't quote me on this, but I believe I heard she used to suffer nightmares (although I guess a lot of kids do. I know I did when I was very young.) The song was his way of offering comfort and assuring her he was there. Interestingly, Riley DeGarmo has since grown into a beautiful and talented songstress herself. I believe you can find some of her stuff on here. Some even featuring Chris accompanying her.

I used to listen to this song when I was in High School in the early 90s when I was in bed. I put it on repeat 1, because it's an awesome song and 2, because it was super soothing, which put me right out.

I love your experienced breakdown of this magnificent song. I remember when this song was released, and it is one of my all-time favorite songs. Geoff Tate is a master musical storyteller. You have earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the outstanding work. And I hope that you consider doing a cover to this remarkable piece of musical art. I would listen to your rendition of this classic. Have a great week!

That amazing string arrangement was by Michael Kamen (may he rest in peace). He has done many incredible rock n roll string arrangements, including Metallica "Nothing Else Matters". He was the best...

Great reaction! I really appreciate that the whole band (apart from Scott Rockenfield) worked on their background vocals together. They all went to Geoff Tate's vocal coach to help them with their harmonies. I honestly believe that's why their vocals sounded so great live. I would love to see a collaboration reaction with Julia on Queensryche's "Operation: Livecrime" video or the "Operation: Mindcrime" album in their entirety!

Sweet reaction. Another thing about this song is the timing with dynamics, when he sings the lyrics "come tumbling down and a new world will begin" the drummer adds a drum fill descending from the high to low tom drums mimicking something collapsing, perhaps relative to the walls in the fore mentioned line "the walls you built within".

Thank you! You taught me a lot about a song I’ve dearly loved since the first day I heard it! I don’t know if anyone’s pointed this out yet, but the cello notes at the end are reminiscent of the Lullaby “Go to Sleep”.

@TheFairyVoiceMother First of all... Lov ya tooooooo!❤ And Julia as well!💓 This was the truly the sweetest reaction video I've ever seen. It was such a pleasure watching it. Thank you, Sweetheart ❤ Julia was absolutely right. Cheer's, dear Julia 💓 Queensryche? What can I say? As a real Rycher ftom beginning on. They are so much more. More than just a progressive Rock or Metal Bend. In their prime they were so much over the top. Mote like a modern version of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven or Vivaldi in my humble opinion. Not just another Rock'n'Roll Bsnd. You can hear it if you listen carefully. How this band sounds like. How they placed everything on their record's. And thos exactly is what's separates them from any other band on this planet. Even Pink Floyd! Because of Geoff Tate's Vocals. And Chrus DeGarmo as well. The only Band that comes close to this band always was FATES WARNING. Because Ray Alder s Voice is pure Gold. So if it's ok I would like to recommending Fates Warning Wish, or Fates Warning - Left Here. Wish was Fates Warning s Silent Lucidity if you will. Ok. Without these orchestral Arrangements. But the closest Song to Silentl Lucidity i in my humble opinion. And please don't let us wait again this long time again for your next Queensryche Reaction!❤ Next Queensryche Song to react to if you ask me? Queensryche - I Will Remember from their 1992 MTV unplugged Session. Oh! By the way... So many people had has recommended Queensryche's Take Hold of the Flame. Truly an amazing Statement. Without doubt. But... There's something more Geoff Tate could do with his Voice. It's Queensryche's U2 Cover Version of Bullet the Blue Sky. No one ever screamed at me asi in this Song - but my Mother! ^^lol^^ And you're The Fairy Voice MOTHER! So...

I am probably their biggest fan. Once I found them, I lost all thought of any other band. Geoff Tate is untouchable in his prime. I Will Remember live MTV unplugged or Killing Words showcases his vocal variety. There's another song called "Out of Mind" that he uses a soft breathy type voice but still hits range. Just insane how he huddles in most everyone's voice break. I do not know if I'm the only person who hears binaural audio frequencies in the strings.
