The reason for all that negativity is all the autotune (which she used for effect, not function). Laymen often take the mere presence of autotune as proof that the vocalist can’t hold a note without assistance, which is of course nonsense except in very extreme cases like Kanye.

@lblincoe2094
@lblincoe2094 Ай бұрын
Her inconsistency is a direct effect of the intention behind her performances. Rihanna has never been aiming for consistency or a technical execution, that's not her interest or her aim. That would be inauthentic and take her out of the moment, out of the feeling. Her approach to singing is entirely focused on connecting with the emotion of the song and emoting the feeling behind it through her performance. She doesn't WANT her performances to be consistent, she never performs the same way twice because that wouldn't be authentic to the moment or the emotion. Ultimately, Rihanna isn't a singer, she's an artist. She's more invested in the self expression and passion of performing than she's ever been with vocal technicality and that's why people connect with her so deeply and are so moved by her performances. Essentially, it's not a flaw, it's a feature!

Rihanna sings REALLY well when she focuses... (Her American Idol performance of Where Have You Been is FANTASTIC). Most of the time I think she doesn't hit that technical level because she's simply having fun with her craft and delivering a unique own version of the song that's not on the album (sometimes it's more energetic, or tired, or soulful or lazy depending on her vibe and/or the energy of the crowd). It's also easy to forget a number of these performances are recorded with phones and/or compressed + ripped across the internet delivering a stranger vocal to your home than you would hear in the venue. Regardless - Rihanna is very entertaining to listen to and watch :)

As a vocalist, I really do believe Rihanna is underrated. Rihanna can really sing and I know that so many believe she cannot, but I am part of Rihanna Navy and lemme tell you, she can SING. There's so many performances showing her vocal abilities. Rihanna is an incredible singer and if she "couldn't" sing, I'm sure she wouldn't have the success she has today. Also Ms.Georgina (hopefully I spelled it right) I think you should watch her Diamonds performance at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show and react to it. I'm sure you'd like it.

I’d agree she can sing, but mediocre at best. Also untalented pop singers make it all the time. Madonna, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Avril Lavigne, and Britney Spears are all huge pop stars that can barely keep a tune. (Rihanna is on the middle ground with the likes of Katy Perry and Kesha.)

I've been telling people forever that Rihanna CAN sing. She just wasn't groomed to be a performer like Beyonce was, so she had to grow into it. I think you should hear the Love On The Brain track because the song does take you on a wild ride vocally (it's one of her most complex songs). But, yay! I'm so happy more people are joining the Rihanna CAN sing train. Lol.

This was fun to watch, thankyou. I first sat up and noticed Rihanna when I saw her Diamonds performance at the Victoria Secret show. Until then, I was convinced that she just used autotune and lipsynced her way through nasal songs. Boy, I was impressed and since then, I've enjoyed her vocals - not so much her songs but they are growing on me. I wonder what she would be like with full vocal training/coaching, but at the same time, it's her own uniqueness and the way she totally mixes it up her vocals that I find fascinating, so I don't really want that to change. I listened to her album Anti recently (on repeat) and I was surprised at how she's changed her style of music - evolving - it's perfect for her to find her own way. Her heavy, slow, low tone rap-style is just on point (Desperado)! She's a true growing artist in that she evolves and changes - from her hair to her music - as frequently as she chooses.

She has such a unique voice, and it places her in a distinct position in the industry. It isn't on Mariah level, but it's Rihanna, she's on her own level. You know it's her when you hear her on any outlet. 'Raw' is the word I'd describe her as.

What I think about Rihanna is that she's lazy about her vocals and she FEELS her songs rather than just singing like crazy. She mixes her vocals with the song's energy and it's GREAT to listen to

She has improved enough to be considered a good singer, with a very particular tone and nice connection with the audience. She isn't great but she is good enough and I actually really like her. Her songs accompanied me through so many phases it's impossible not to feel some sort of love for her.

I think that Rihanna could be a good singer if she stopped smoking and trained very intensely for 2 years or so, because she has some nice moments despite minimal effort. She has a pleasant smoky timbre and she would do great in Caribbean inspired music, but she's been in the business for so long with zero improvements, so I doubt she''ll suddenly become ambitious.

I would argue the her vocals have improved recently on her anti songs . But I would also argue that she doesnt take care of her voice consistently.

Natural Emprezz Honestly I only know her biggest singles and only few of them have that vibe, but perhaps it's different on albums. Anyway I meant that this style really compliments her voice, even though she could definitely do great in most popular genres. She has so many beautiful and catchy songs and it's a shame that typically I can only appreciate the covers (or Sia's original :D).

It goes with her IDGAF branding being effortless kinda lazy performer and people are drawn to that. Being a try hard is a little turn off . For example Jessie J, although I love and adore her, she always has the need to show off on every chance she gets (don't get me wrong I really love Jessie J and she outsing everybody but she needs to calm down sometimes)

glad you like her, for i think ,that she has one of the most distinctive voices in the industry..plus from her first record til now she improved her style record by record (which doesn t necessarily happens all the time) and she proved,that she rather stick to her direction, than jump on the trend of the moment...love her
