YAAAAAAAAAY! I've been hoping for a Rosalía reaction for months now! Curious fact: this song sounds "more Flamenco" because it's acoustic, but the original contains autotune and electronics, and it's included in her experimental album, "El Mal Querer" :P I'm from Andalusia, a region in South Spain, and it's where Flamenco first concocted. I'm SO glad you acknowledge all its influences (most people just say "Gypsy" and stay there). It has thousand-of-years-old influences. There are evidence of this, for example, in a Roman mosaic where some musicians dressed super similarly to today's Málaga's festival of Verdiales. Or the mention of "exotic and sensual dancers who also played castanets" in Roman Baetica (which roughly corresponds to today's Andalusia). All this plus what you said: Arabic, Jewish, Gypsy, African... It's super interesting. Depending on the "palo" (song style) it can sound Indian, Arabic, European or Mediterranean. I feel bad for ignoring it for so long, having it so at hand lol. I REALLY hope that you react to more of her songs especially from "El Mal Querer", which was actually her bachelor's degree project. AND if you wanna hear amazing modern Flamenco, I VEHEMENTLY recommend to you that you react to MARÍA JOSÉ LLERGO, particularly to "Me Miras Pero No Me Ves" or "Niña de las Dunas". She's native to Flamenco. I'm NOT dismissing Rosalía for not being Andalusian or not listening from childhood, but I think you can appreciate the difference. And her voice is pretty amazing, too. Great reaction and analysis! Thanks!

Her appearance in COLORS was spectacular, if you wish to check it out

José Monje Cruz a.k.a Camarón de la Isla. That's his name, you can't translate "de la isla" hahah. But yes, it means "of the island", and it's a reference of his city San Fernando, Cádiz (south of Spain). And "Camarón" means little prawn haha. His uncle gave him that name because he was skinny as a child. Camarón de la Isla was a BIG influence in flamenco music here in Spain. He's a leyend and people that focus on this genre (like Rosalía) grow up learning from him. I am so proud Rosalía it's taking flamenco music all around the world... This is a dream because Flamenco music deserves more recognition. It is as beautiful, dificult and interesting as Jazz!! Imagine...

#rosalia is definitely opening up some new fans to the magic of Flamenco. I’d like to ask a favor though Beth! Could you please pronounce Camarón de la Isla’s last name correctly?! This is the 2nd video that you’ve said ( eye-la ) it is ( ease-la! ) also it’d be nice to point out that this is a prime example of the Phrygian mode over the Spanish Cadence iv- III - II - I(b9) it is what makes Flamenco-#Flamenco!👉🏼 the progression of 4321 and the notes of the minor Phrygian mode. The main progression here is: Gb9, Fb7(#11), Eb(b9) relative major key of Gb major (This is concert pitch though...👆🏼the guitarist here is playing w a capo on the 6th fret in the key of A altered Phrygian or “por medio” (in the middle) as they say in Spain because the A chord is in the center of the fretboard😺. So in guitar land it would be considered the key of F major capped at the 6th fret. #funfacts and if you have perfect pitch and are reading this I hope you know what I mean (capo for transpositions). Thanks Beth!
@Sk0lzky Жыл бұрын
>influences are islamic, arabic, jewish Lmao no, it actually went the other way, some regions of Europe like spain (and especially andalucia), parts of italy, Greece and balkans simply didn't lose certain musical traditions like central and northern Europe. In fact there's an early arabic source outright stating they took melismatic singing (the famous call to prayer) straight from the (east) romans (and spanish phrygian scale barely appears in Arabic music). I guess guitar comes from lute and therefore from oud (also not Arabic, not to mention Islamic, development, although it does play a more central role in Arabic music than for example Iranian )
