Weird Al anyone? Stephen Lynch anyone? There's a theme here. Comedy musicians are regularly overlooked because by nature of their work no one takes them seriously. In the case of Stephen Lynch it took him dominating on Broadway for some recognition.

I think what carried this cover for me was not the voice, which, although brilliant, was vastly overshadowed by Kyle's breathtaking interpretation of the melody on guitar. the dynamic and precision of these admittedly simple runs was just so inspiring.
@privateer0561 Жыл бұрын
Agree. Kyle played it well and clean when he was out there naked and alone. Sometimes I hypnotize myself when I get it right and it sounds good - and then I screw up because I lose my concentration.

I couldn't agree more. People don't realise that in order to be funny with music and singing, you have to be actually _REALLY_ good at it. One of my all-time favourites is Victor Borge, who was known for playing hilarious piano skits where he'd play a song, then suddenly realise he was playing the piece backwards or had the music sheet upside-down or played all the right notes, just not in the right order. The man was an absolute genius and magician with a piano and not enough people realised the man's true talents to pull such skits off so flawlessly.

Wicked Game is probably one of my favorite songs ever and I've yet to hear a bad cover to it. (one day that could change, but who knows?) I'm convinced it's so perfect that it's impossible to do a bad one, unless you actually try really hard to mess it up. I'm so in love with this rendition, the only real negative is how painfully short it is. I need it to be longer. I need this.
@hraefn1821 Жыл бұрын
I need a full version as well. Jack has such a pitch perfect voice for it. And he clearly understands and respects the emotion as well as Chris Isaak. You can tell he is a sincere fan. (Chris Isaak is my favorite singer of all time btw.)

Former Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier performed this song too and his interpretation was kind of like denying rather than like the original which sounds very sexy and romantic, Adam was singing from a place of denial and not wanting that love because of reluctance to accept his love.

I've said for a long time that your speaking voice alone is wonderful for audio books. It's such a positive tone. This cover is fantastic! I can't stop myself from suggesting some minor notes thrown in for a haunting sound. Your tone would be perfect for that. Maybe just you and a piano with a haunting melody, and some reverb. In my head it sounds wicked

Agreed. I think that over the years people have fallen into the trap of thinking Tenacious D were good singers for being actors. When in actuality they're just good period. They *are* a goof band. They admit to that themselves, they've said in interviews that Tenacious D can never be a serious band. However, it's hard to be good goof band without also being very good musicians, because you have to have a really good understanding of what you're doing to be able to make it funny. And Tenacious D is a *very* good goof band.

Nice, I quite like the understatedness you mentioned, present both here and in your own cover. You absolutely need to check out Violet Orlandi's "Wicked Game" cover, it is perhaps my favorite version of the song, including the original. Her take is different in that it is very dramatic and evokes a sense of desperation that is only hinted at in most other versions.

Totally agree that it's legit for different people to think of things differently, but I would like to articulate why "breathe into the belly" makes sense despite the anatomical inaccuracy. When I sing, I use my abdominal muscles to drive exhalation and to support my breath column. Breathing in "into the belly" is the exact same thing in reverse. Doesn't matter that only a small fraction of my torso is actually housing my lungs - what I'm doing is expanding and contracting my overall abdomino-thoracic volume, and my abdomen is the best place to do that (though I do also expand my chest).
